Sturgill Simpson's "Sound & Fury"

A friend recently suggested I give the realtively new country star Sturgill Simpson a listen.

I appreciate roots-type music, and will listen to a country tune if the song is good and he said that some of his style can veer near bluesy-soul territory. I certainly enjoy those things, so I decided to check it out.

Not long after that suggestion I saw a video selection on Netflix for Sturgill Simpson , titled "Sturgill Simpson Presents Sound & Fury." An anime video? Huh, what a coincidence to see him here, and wow, he's involved in an anime production?

>

I watched it to get a taste of what's up, and I was blown away by this creation! The album "Sound & Fury" actually rocks out, covering synth-rock, disco-funk, boogie-woogie, heavy-hitting hard rock, and even a tinge of Pink Floyd-prog. You should discover the tale if such music suits your taste, and especially see the Netflix feature if you are into action-packed anime! The story details a dystopian environment. One disclaimer--it's kinda' bloody.

On some background, it turns out that the album was already written and recorded before the anime production was conceived. Looking into this I found that Simpson is a longtime anime fan and animated inspirations were upfront in his vision's mind when creating the sounds of this decidedly non-traditionally-country album. Months after the end of recording he sought to develop an anime video for a single but the project ultimately covered the entire album.

I didn't expect to see all of what I saw and heard stemming from my friend's suggestion, but an artist will do what the muse inspires.

Yeah, I like some of Sturgill's stuff--a versatile talent. Even had tickets to see him before lockdown...
