It's the Homecoming concert that was recorded last summer and aired on PBS in December. It is fantastic! It really captures Chaka in all of her glory. I made a huge donation to PBS just to get a copy of the DVD. I had no idea there was a planned DVD release for this year at a fraction of the price. That's okay, though. I have been watching and enjoying PBS programming all of my life and this is the first donation I have ever made to them. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Here is what Chaka's sister Yvonne (aka Taka Boom) posted on FB. And I must say I have to agree with her regarding the song and how it hasn't served all Americans equally:
"Cant believe my sister is being dragged thru the dirt for her rendition of a song that has nothing to do with us and our experience as people of color in this f----d up country.... this song never served us....she should've taken a knee while singing. My sister has spent her entire adult life serenading you....how dare you! She did it and she did the way she felt it..... Stand down!"
Maybe someone should ask Chaka's sister Yvonne, then knowing all what she said about the song, then why did Chaka agree to sing it, especially if the song "never served us, and our experience as people of color in this f----d up country?" If Yvonne feels so strongly about the song and America, then why would your sister sing such a song? Makes no sense! If the performance would have gone well, and everyone would have been praising Chaka's singing of it, would Yvonne have trashed the song and the country then? My guess is no! It had nothing to do with the song or our country, but everything with people stating that Chaka didn't sing well. |

This is how you sing the national anthem. No over-singing, no needless runs, no weird melody.

These are Yvonne's words. Not Chaka's. Taka is being protective of her sister while people are attacking her, which I would assume most people are protective of their sibling if they have a close relationship.
Chaka performed it because she was asked and Im sure she didnt do it for free. A lot of us have done things on our job that we didnt want to do or didnt agree with but when that electric bill comes in the mail, they dont give a rats behind about what you think or how you feel. The bill is due. Gotta work to have the bread to pay it. [Edited 2/17/20 19:15pm]"It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Well she could have easily defended her sister without having to trash the anthem or the country. And most celebrity anthem singers do it for free or very little money, quite often to promote themself. If she's releasing an album soon, that would probably be a good reason to want the publicity.

This is america and Yvonne has the constitutional right to express her opinion about the song and how people of color have been and continue to be treated in this country if she wants. As far as Chaka promoting the so-called new album, to my knowledge, she hasn't said a word about it's release on March 13th so obviously she's not making these appearances to promote the PBS DVD/CD. Yes this is America, and the constitutional right to express one's opinion works both ways! EVERYONE has a right to express their opinion, not just those that don't like it when an opinion is something they don't like or want to hear! And people need to stop with the accusation of racism, and calling everyone a racist for everything, it's gotten old, fast! Yes, people of color were treated badly in this country, but that was a long time ago, things have changed and continue to change! Black people aren't slaves anymore, and they don't put up with the shit our ancestors had to endure and put up with! I find that the ones who keep harping on racism and calling everyone a racist, are the ones that are keeping racism going, the ones who are really dividing people, and keeping races from moving on! Maybe that's the way some really want it, so they keep up the racist garbage, calling everyone and everything racist! People are getting sick of it! |

Well said, looby!
And Kit, you missed my point entirely whether intentional or not. You said Taka is being protective of her sister, and I have absolutely no problem with sisters sticking up for each other in a situation like this. My point remains, her going off on a tangent by using foul language to attack the national anthem and the country IN NO WAY helps "protect" Chaka. In fact, it hurts her defense. Taka is actually CRITICIZING Chaka for singing the anthem, and you don't even realize that??? Very strange.
As for the release, it's very common for singers to want publicity right before they release music or go on tour or do a movie or something. Actually talking about what they are promoting is not necessary. I'm curious, when else has Chaka done the anthem? And again, if she feels the same way about the anthem and country as Taka does, then why did she sing it?

Black people aren't slaves anymore
The Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key, who owned slaves and the anthem even mentions slaves. But people don't generally sing that part. It is also not true that Black people aren't slaves anymore. If you eat chocolate, that's a chance slavery is behind it. In the USA, people in prison are legal slaves today. The 13th amendment says so.

Tell that to the many celebrities that choose to sing the song, including Chaka Khan! Maybe they don't know all that you do, or maybe they just don't give a damn! Also, do you eat chocolate, because if you do, remember you're a participating part of the slavery that's behind it. And people that have murdered others, and committed other horrible crimes shouldn't be held accountable for them and imprisoned, because then they are legal slaves according to the 13th amendment, and we just can't have that! |

Such as the horrible crime of smoking weed. Not everybody in prison is guilty of anything anyway. There's lots of cases where a person was let out of prison years or decades later after finding out they were innocent in the first place. Some have had false witnesses testify against them.
