Have you ever seen the Wattstax concert movie? Kim Weston sings The Star Spangled Banner and hardly anyone in the audience pays any attention to her. Then she starts singing Lift Every Voice And Sing. Just about the entire stadium stands up and raises a fist. lol

I already mentioned it, and that was different. She intentionally made it into a comedy skit, and she paid the price BIG TIME for disrespecting the anthem.

What price did Rossanne pay? Her sitcom remained on ABC for many years after she performed the anthem.

A lot of people are feeling that way. Again, the lyrics and meaning of that song have not covered all Americans the same. Doesnt make them less patriotic. Just means they know their history as well as the present.

She paid on the recent reboot for something she posted on Twitter though. ABC fired her right away and renamed the show The Connors.

When the president calls it disgraceful, you can't get much lower than that. Also the crowd booed her loudly, the home announcer called it the worst performance he'd ever heard, the team president was forced to apologize, star players called it an insult and a disgrace and the worst they ever heard, the commissioner publicly wondered if she was on drugs, it was on the cover of newspapers across the country and all over the network news programs, the media had headlines calling her "Roseanne Barrf" and "Miss Piggy" and "The Fat Lady", radio stations were calling her an "obnoxious pig" and "disgusting joke", and she was forced to stop her standup comedy act for a while. She was forced to call a press conference about it, the Yankees longtime anthem singer said "I almost upchucked my dinner. It was to me like the burning of the flag."

Too many crazy runs and melody changes, but she still has the power to jump the octaves with precision and power. For me, the most amazingly sung National Anthem honor belongs 2 Jennifer Hudson at Superbowl XLIII in 2009. Classy, powerful where it needed 2b and subtle where it needed subtlety. She kept 2 the melody and sang it with absolute reverence. I teared up with that sustained high note at the end.

Chaka's performance wasn't an Ann Nesby moment was it? Lord knows she got on everybody nerves oversinging and squealing over her own group to the point you couldn't hear the other lead vocalists sing during the BET tribute to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Everyone on social media roasted Mrs. Nesby for that mess.

Funny...I didn't think that Miss Ann was doing that intentionally. I think her mike was turned up too high and it was too late 2 do a retake, phunkdaddy. I don't ever recall anyone sayin' that she was a Diva or anything like that. Then again, maybe she IS. LOL. Not sure. Also, B.E.T. either doesn't do soundchecks before tapings of its award shows, OR, the person responsible for the mixing is tone deaf. Can't tell. eek <3

...and let us NOT 4get Anita Baker's TWO attempts at it (on Youtube.) As if the 1st version wasn't bad enuff, she was compelled 2 correct it with a 2nd version that was a TAD better, but as embarassing as the 1st. Mumma needs 2 accept where her range and control are. Both her key and her pitch were way off. I cringe (at first) and then laugh hysterically through the entire two performances. SO bad and acapella TOO. Oh, LORT! :-O

BY FAR this is the BEST version of the anthem that I've ever heard. I heard this LIVE, when Marvin sang it.. before the All-Star game.. & I remember thinking "why is Marvin singing this "sexual anthem ? ? ? "

.

at the time I though "oh, he's simply 'piggy-backing' off the success of his hit "sexual healing"..

I wasn't crazy about his version when he did it then.. but with time.. this song has really grown on me & now it's my all-time version of that anthem.

.

as for Chaka's version - I've only heard part of it. I may or may not decide to hear her entire rendition, mainly becasuse as I am (& have always been) a HUGE FAN of Chaka Khan..

she has earned the right to sing any song in any way she wants. so.. a 10-second version of the anthem she can do.. or a 4-hour version ; she could do a scat version of it or hum the anthem.

.

Here is what Chaka's sister Yvonne (aka Taka Boom) posted on FB. And I must say I have to agree with her regarding the song and how it hasn't served all Americans equally:

"Cant believe my sister is being dragged thru the dirt for her rendition of a song that has nothing to do with us and our experience as people of color in this f----d up country.... this song never served us....she should've taken a knee while singing. My sister has spent her entire adult life serenading you....how dare you! She did it and she did the way she felt it..... Stand down!"

I don't watch The Masked Singer. Even Chaka couldn't make me suffer through that mess. lol But, based on my understanding, the live audience decides who's booted off and who stays. The show is mainly about who they feel is the best entertainer, not the best singer. I hear there is a football player, I believe, who can't sing a lick but he's entertaining and they are keeping him on purely based on the entertainment factor.

I "watched" a portion of the show once when i was stuck on the phone with my cable company. This was when La Toya was on and I knew who she was right away. The concept of the show baffled me and I just couldn't understand how anyone could find it even remotely entertaining. bored

oh yes Lawd.. I am praying AND hoping MISS PATTI will be asked to this anthem - or america the beautiful - or even "if you don't know me by now".. before ANY major sports event or championship ! people "whining" about Chaka at 3-some minutes ? ? MISS PATTI could do an HOUR-LONG version of this anthem, & probably not even break a sweat..

This is america and Yvonne has the constitutional right to express her opinion about the song and how people of color have been and continue to be treated in this country if she wants. As far as Chaka promoting the so-called new album, to my knowledge, she hasn't said a word about it's release on March 13th so obviously she's not making these appearances to promote the PBS DVD/CD.

Yes this is America, and the constitutional right to express one's opinion works both ways! EVERYONE has a right to express their opinion, not just those that don't like it when an opinion is something they don't like or want to hear! And people need to stop with the accusation of racism, and calling everyone a racist for everything, it's gotten old, fast! Yes, people of color were treated badly in this country, but that was a long time ago, things have changed and continue to change! Black people aren't slaves anymore, and they don't put up with the shit our ancestors had to endure and put up with! I find that the ones who keep harping on racism and calling everyone a racist, are the ones that are keeping racism going, the ones who are really dividing people, and keeping races from moving on! Maybe that's the way some really want it, so they keep up the racist garbage, calling everyone and everything racist! People are getting sick of it!

based on your comment, Looby, it might or might not be of benefit to you to do a youtube search for Dr. Robin DiAngelo. granted, the best video from her (that I've seen so far) is the 1 that's like 1 hr 42 minutes long:

.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrOFpaB-PQI

.

not to get into a big discussion of it here, but "racism" is a SYSTEM, it's not "specific acts of discrimination made only by 'overtly racist' people"

.

racism & discrimination did not end - at all - upon the emancipation of the stolen Africans who, through slavery, infinitely built up the wealth of this country.

.

that people today (& yesterday.. & tomorrow) continue to call out "racism" & discrimination is not an indication or desire to "keep it going".. rather.. until more caucasians recognize that it exists & until they acknowledge its impact on everyone.. people will & should continue to call it out.

.

myself included.

Listened to Chaka's version and I don't get what all the fuss is about. It wasn't awful. It wasn't my fav version ever (that would be Whitney's superbowl performance) but it was not awful at all. I think people just like to complain about everything.

That's kinda like Dancing With The Stars, but it's the TV viewers who call the show to vote. It's not always the best dancer who makes it to the finals. Sometimes it's the celebrity who is more well known to the general public or sports fans.
