Yes, Prince was inducted the first year of his eligibilty. That's because he had a rare talent, unlike so many others they let in for really no reason other than they had some hits.

Slightly off-topic: I found it touching that Elton John located a musician he greatly admired, (as do I), Leon Russell, and generally resurrected him and helped usher him into the RRHOF.

Yeah, I know and I don't have a problem with Run DMC in there (fusing rock with hip hop and taking hip hop to the mainstream via MTV) or Public Enemy (taking sampling, including rock and roll samples, and social consciousness to a new level in a way that influenced 90s music) being in there because I feel that their music influenced rock and roll and other genres outside of hip hop. Regarding the Beastie Boys, I'm indifferent and I don't feel that NWA contributed anything to rock and roll except for mainstreaming curse words. As for Tupac, the influence of his rebel music/image is still evident today in music of all genres so I have no problem with his induction. * That said, I have a hard time identifying any way that Biggie influenced music outside of hip hop. I have no doubt that he'll get in for next year but I still wish that there could be a hip hop HOF with all of the prestige and celebration as the rock and roll HOF.

With women being severely under-represented in the RRHOF and the committee's recent embracing of Hip-Hop, I wonder why there have been no female nominees from the Hip-Hop genre? Queen Latifah, Salt & Pepa, MC Lyte? "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

MC Lyte deserves the spot, especially as she continues to be active in the industry.

I agree, and finally Pat Benatar gets a nod. I would add Thin Lizzy as my fifth.

Houston was not a cross over artist ! She was pop from the get go and marketed by Clive Davis (Artisa Records) as such. Also her success was bought and paid for by Arista Records. There was nothing organic about her career. The hall of fame is about musical contribution. [Edited 10/23/19 13:46pm]

If it's more about fame, then why isn't Kool & the Gang in or even nominated? Probably the most popular black band between 80-85 save the Jacksons. PRINCE: Always and Forever

I have to disagree. "You Give Good Love", the first single from her debut, was strongly marketed towards the R&B audience. It topped that chart but stalled at #3 on the Pop side. Subsequent singles were more targeted towards Pop audiences. In the 80's, it was important for most black artists to solidify their R&B audience first. Despite her fighting it, even Tina Turner was told "Private Dancer" must include R&B songs to be a success in the United States. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! Lionel Richie was bigger than Kool & The Gang and he's not in. I don't think they just put in people who happened to be popular or else Barry Manilow, Grand Funk Railroad, Eurythmics, George Benson, Kenny G, Bread, Kenny Rogers, Vanilla Fudge, The Osmonds/Donny & Marie, The Carpenters, Billy Ocean, Foreigner, John Denver, Mötley Crüe, Phil Collins, etc would have been inducted. But Percy Sledge is inducted and he's mostly known for 1 song although he had a few other hits. Herb Alpert is inducted, but not as a performer. He's in because he started A&M Records with Jerry Moss. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I'm really disappointed to see that Rufus and Chaka Khan are near the bottom (just like last year)

The Doobie Bros over Todd Rundgren...?? I cannot take this seriously. I think fan votes should be augmented with feedback from talented musicians, trusted and knowledgeable music critics etc. I have lost interest.

Me, too. Like someone stated here previously, most people who listened to Rufus and Chaka back in the 70s and early 80s don't really care about the RRHOF so the public vote will always be low for them. Only the committee vote would get them in. Truth be told, I'd rather see Chaka be inducted as a solo artist. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley
