Are the best of times already behind us?

Probably the best music ever made came out of the 60's,70's and 80's.You hear them on the radio every day and always will. But what about the last thirteen years?Yeah there has been some really cool stuff put out but in thirty years from now what songs do you think will be oldies but goodies?I've tried to come up with some, just from 1990 till now and there isnt a whole lot to choose from that might be considered a future classic. What do you think?

have we seen the best that music has to offer?

TRON

Most of the best music has never been on the radio anyway.

crazyhorse, think about the songs you hear from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. chances are, you're going to hear about the same 100-200 songs a LOT of times.

it'll be the same for the 90's and today. back in those previous decades, there were THOUSANDS of songs on the radio, but probably up to 500 from each decade has made it into the collective consciousness. only those songs are the real keepers that continue to be evergreen and still get heard and remembered.

i see no reason why today's music won't be the same. people have been complaining about the state of music for at least 50 years now, saying that "music today isn't as good as it used to be!" usually meaning that it isn't as good now, as full-fledged adult, as it was during our formative years when we were really into what was new, modern, hip, cool, the cat's pj's, etc.

Actually you have a good point. But man the shit you hear today really is sub-par in my opinion.Take rap for example.Ever try listening to rap thats twenty plus years old?I'm probably gonna get some grief for this but RunDMC.Stetsasonic,Kool Moe Dee or the Gucci Crew are some of rap musics pioneers and there stuff is garbage.I dont know its just something I was wondering.Guess I'll see twenty years from now.

It's a generational cycle. Our parents dissed the music we listened to, their parents dissed the music our parents listened to, and so on.

There is dross in every era in the history of music. But when we remember what we perceive as the greatest music, it's usually during our formative years when things were more "innocent" than today, and we were sowing our wild oates. The music we attach to these memories is always the good music. In hindsight most of the time filter out the crap we heard.

But I believe this is true: it's harder today to consistently get quality music played on mainstream radio than ever before. I'm talking quality music in general, not just one genre.

Having said all that; the best music of all time was the music of the late '60s thru 70s, and the 80s are highly overrated by most Prince fans because that's when most of us have our fondest memories of the short dude's heyday, and we were in elementary/junior high/high school. biggrin

In 20 years some people are going to look at the era of now and say "those were the good ol' days"

Most definitely. During the late 70's, I remember the music scene was declared by popular artists and press. They were referring to the HORRID pop rock crap, Eagles, Boston, Journey crap.

So, again, while WE ain't hearing what's going on right now, who here was DIGGIN grunge before it hit big? Right. The underground stuff stays underground until critics write about it years later, and then it becoms idolozed, or canonized.

I think some great music is just around the corner. Music revolution always happens with a crappy republican president and a war - Nixon/VietNam, Reagan/Iran, Bush I/Iraq.

we only feel that way because we have a connection to that music. kids growing up now will have that same connection with the 90's music and today's music. But, like tron said earlier, the best music is't even on the radio.
