The first song from her forthcoming new album. Not excited yet? Me neither.

The title was the first hint that the song would be another entry in a long string of inferior Mariah singles.

Welp, Ariana Grande just dropped a whole album missing that certain warmth. If that's her main competition these days, Mariah's still going to have to do something other than one boring single per year.

While not taking anything away from Mariah, Ariana is what Mariah wishes she still was today. (And I'm not one to pit women against each other like that.)

The thing is, Mariah is older now. Not out of touch or anything, but voices change with age. In another thread, we talked about how Michael Jackson often had his songs a half-step or full-step lower than the record, to partially save his voice on tour (which is grueling) and because he aged.

Mariah needs to do the same thing. She is 48, and God bless her for still making music, but she doesn't have a 22-year-old voice anymore. Even Auntie ReRe's voice changed over time. The cooing she does in this shit songs (read: pregnant pigeon) is a cheeky way to gloss over her not being able to hit the notes she could 25 years ago.

Ariana will face this in another 20 years (she's 25 now). Everyone does. Age deepens a voice. I love Ariana Grande's voice. It's strong and solid. If you ever hear her isolated mic on YouTube, the bitch is sangin' like a MFer!

The comparisons between Ariana and Mariah were obviously going to happen in the public. Their voices are similar but not identical. That whistle register tho! My God, they're both brilliant at it and few can pull it off! Even Whitney didn't have that whistle register. She just had power like Aretha. Whitney really fucked up her gift, though. Mariah's only real obstacle is age, not smoking crack.

In short, Ariana can sing as well as Mariah and these days (with a 23-year gap between them) she can sing better than Mariah on any given day. Again, not taking away from Mariah's accomplishments and legacy. She'll forever be amazing. Maybe she should start singing songs that fit her voice more and still sound fresh and new on radio, etc.
