Which Mariah Carey do you like?

Hi Guys,

When I was younger I was obsessed with Mariah...I remember having my bedroom walls and roof covered in Mariah posters.

I thought she was so classy and beautiful with her peaking in looks around the MTV Unplugged time. She looked so cute in just the jeans and jacket.

Then she started changing....

Look I must say this....I love porn and women lol.....and I still loved looking at Mariah with less and less clothing with each album release...

But I dont know what exactly happened to her...she was so nice in the Vision of Love, Emotions, MTV Unplugged and even Music Box time periods.

Liked when she first started then she lost me. Don't think it was image change that did it but I just prefer her first releases over late 90s on

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

That's when Tommy Motolla was telling her what to do.

I liked her when she first came out.Early songs like "Vision Of Love" and "Can't Let Go" were excellent and heartfelt. Her image at the time was classy, too.

I lost interest when she jumped on the "hip-hop collaboration" bandwagon and positioned herself as a Queen Diva bored

Whatever happens to her, she has joined the ranks of Wham! and Chris Rhea: there will always be one time of the year when one of your songs will be played everywhere...

She just got old and fat.

The fact that her music blows hasn't helped her image either.

You know, I have a love hate relationship with her early era before Butterfly. You can tell she was not being herself. Her albums didnt really have any personality until Butterfly...even though there were good songs, much of the albums were filled with sappy pedestrian love ballads. I did not get a sense of who she was until Butterfly.

On that note she kinda went off the rails for a while during the Rainbow - Charmbracelet era (although Glitter was a good soundtrack, and Rainbow was not bad at all either). Each albums still featuring personal and strong on them no matter if there were rappers here and there on them.

Then she won me over again with Emancipation of Mimi. My fav in all of her collection. Since then she has mosly just been coasting (Imperfect Angel, Mimi 2 were 6/10..better than average but nothing to rave about). Elusive Chanteuse was not bad either actually...almost a return to form.

Her highest point creatively by some distance ... shame it only lasted one album:

I loved the Glitter soundtrack and when "Honey" was released. I understand what you mean though. I think when she got her breast implants she became more "porn-ish" and went a little overboard. Maybe simpily a woman having anxiety about getting older and doubling down on the sexy. I actually like her later songs more than the earlier ones . Mariah kind of grew on me over the years. smile

"Butterfly" was the beginning of the end for me. "Emotions" and "Musicbox" were stone cold claasics. Her music has been too hit and miss since 1997. The only album that comes close to the quality of her earlier stuff is "Mimi".

I'm not the biggest fan, but I would be nice if she made a comeback if not commercially at least artistically. Like for example, how Christina Aguilera has done with her latest album.

I think she should find a balance between the old Mariah and the new Mariah.

Have a mix of ballads with more contemporary hip hop, R&B tracks like Christina's album. Not too far in either direction.

I know she said she was against this, but I also think it would be cool if she did a dance/house album. She's had popular remixes. It would be something different for her, but something she could credibly do.

This is just as good as anything on her former albums. Deeply personal on her marriage to Nick Cannon. Love this song.

After hearing her last album and her discussing their relationship falling apart, I am glad she is not feeling that was anymore. A lot of pain in her words

You come and you go
You’re just an echo
A whisper in my ear, but in the morning you’re not here
So intangible, just like an echo

Still try to pretend this possible
To bring us back to life
But we continue to subside
Hanging on for life on this roller coaster ride

I call your name baby, subconsciously
Always somewhere but you're not there for me
Boy you, boy you...

Faded
Baby you’re faded
Baby you’re faded
Faded (boy you just come and you go)

A usual misogynistic comment from a straight man about a woman's career. i.e. Only as good as they are when they were 19 fresh out of mommy's house.

nah. Hung out with and then briefly dated a super fan of Mariah's... her music went downhill for a long while. Really depends though... whereas someone who grew up with her doing ballads, and power ballads, and upbeat dance,... then watched her transition to skanky low standard, production, (i.e. bassy bass, and beats) stuff with guest rappers etc... it was a commercial transition to what I saw (I can only speak for myself) as selling out and pandering to new audiences.

That's what some do if they've been around the block about 30 years. I still watch her do her regular singing appearances, really enjoyed her singing Stevie's YOU AND I years ago... but I really don't dig the music.

It's not cause she's old. It's cause it's all done by producers for mass consumption. I am glad she hasn't jumped on the new bandwagon and got herself in a
"chickenwing, chickin-chicken-chicken wing,
chicken wing, chicken chicken chicken wing
chicken wing, chicken chicken chicken wing"

Style of rap music.... cause that would be horrendous.

We're not talking about a musician/songwriter/singer here.... we're talking about a singer performer. She's marketed to whatever the label will think will sell.

Same thing happened for me with Janet....when she started releasing that AMBIEN stuff... ALL FOR YOU.... and it was just the opposite...she looked hot as hell, but the music sucked. It was terrible... but that was what was in style I guess. R&B was boring as hell, and rap was Dirty South...

I left. I left em both a long time ago. Wouldn't consider myself a fan, but I DID work at a music store for about 4 years and didn't like that transition either... it was crud.

She's a hell of a singing talent. It's a damn shame. Also... close friends of mine went to her shows recently and talked trash (event though they're fans) and they simply attributed it (and sucked it up while she sucked up their money) to the fact that she's a "diva"..

complaints about that show:

"she looked like she couldn't breathe"
"the dancers were always carrying her around the stage/she didn't really walk"
"She lip synced a large part of the set"
"her voice wasn't really that good"

(they avoided the obvious "she's very overweight" thing)....
hell overweight didn't bother those opera singers... I think its something else. She probably doesn't devote time to her craft

Myself, I heard about it. It was a hot ticket, I debated going, but heard it all from fans, and watched videos of those performances... This is supposed to be her return to form... but instead I was really just concerned for her health. We'd just lost Prince, George Michael and Tom Petty, Chris Cornell, Chester.... it seemed like someone taking a wack at the music scene candles of light err something...

anyways, back to point. Both Janet and Mariah's music has continually stunk for at least a decade. The question was "WHICH MARIAH CAREY DO YOU LIKE" -- I can think that the responses have been faithful to each individual and none of them really seem mean or insincere/dishonest

I think you hit the nail on the head when you speculated about her not putting time into her craft. That's a shame because she's got one hell of a voice...fat, skinny, ugly, gorgeous, diva or not...if she devoted time to it in the way she did when she first came on the scene, she'd still be a force to be recommend with IMO

So many artists are afraid to step out of their comfort zone and do something different, but this would be a good idea for her.
