Janet Jackson to Receive Icon Award at 2018 Billboard Music Awards

WELL OVERDUE!

Janet Jackson has been one of music's leading voices since the '80s, and now the pop legend will be honored with an appropriately prestigious award at this year's Billboard Music Awards. Dick Clark Productions and NBC announced Monday (May 7) that Jackson will be receiving the coveted Icon Award, which recognizes singers' contributions.

Along with receiving the honor, Jackson is also scheduled to deliver a highly-anticipated performance, which will be her first on television in nine years. She joins the club of Icon recipients along with Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion and Cher.

It's time to start giving Janet her props. She opened the door for the Beyonces, J-Los, and Ciaras of the world. Long overdue to acknowledge her legacy. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... y'all listening?

Janet is the female pop blueprint (not Mike, not Madoon). Lemonade and "Formation" had Rhythm Nation written all over it (even the long form video approach). The fierce attitude on Control, "Nasty" and "What Have You Done For Me Lately" was not the female norm until Janet hit.

And she first-handedly opened the door for J-Lo.

YAAS GAWD!

Janet is my favorite female artist, and that's coming from a huge Madonna fan. But Janet is just a bit above that on my list. Always has been. I love her so much.

Imagine the reaction if Justin Timberlake was to be the one to present her the award. Or better yet, if he performed a medley of her greatest hits, complete with a duet of Scream with a hologram of Michael Jackson. This place would go crazy LOL.

But seriously though, I've never been a big fan of hers but fair play to her.

source (more behind the link)

On May 18, 1993, pop icon Janet Jackson released her fifth studio album janet. and made her first debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. That year, she was certified five-times platinum by the RIAA and sold more than 14 million copies worldwide. This Sunday (May 20), 25 years ago later, Jackson will receive the Icon Award at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards for her contributions in music.

After a seven-year hiatus following the release of 2008’s Discipline, Jackson made history in 2015 by earning her seventh No. 1 album with Unbreakable (2015) and became the third female musical artist to achieve the most No. 1 albums throughout her career, among the likes of Barbara Streisand and Madonna.

Legendary music producer and long-time collaborator Jimmy Jam, who along with Terry Lewis helped cultivate Jackson’s sound since her breakthrough album Control(1986), says his friend “shows no signs of slowing down” and is deserving of the prestigious accolade.

“I think it’s wonderful she’s being honored. I think it’s well-deserved,” Jam says over the phone. “I would say overdue, but she has so much life left to live that she would be around to receive more awards. If anything, she’s in a unique part of her career where she doesn’t need to do anything but has a lot to say. We’re all the beneficiaries of that, so I feel very proud of her, very happy. It’s just an amazing time for her and the Billboard Awards is going to be another acknowledgment of her greatness over the years.”

Jennifer Lopez on Working With Cardi B, Why Janet Jackson Is an Idol at Billboard Music Awards: Watch https://www.billboard.com...m=referral

The singer also chats about Janet Jackson, who is receiving this year’s Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards. Lopez, who received the award herself in 2014, says that Jackson has always been one of her idols.

“I probably started dancing because of her video ‘Pleasure Principle,’” Lopez reveals. “It was one of my favorite videos ever, still is. And I’m just excited for her. She deserves everything she gets. She is such a musical icon from an iconic musical family and she deserves everything she’s getting.”

Why on earth did Jennifer get this award before janet?? hrmph
