I watched her performance last night, and yet I feel like I didn't see it. From the cuts to the audience and the super wide shots of the entire stage, it almost looked like she didn't dance. And during Throb's breakdown when you know she's going to give you a few 8-counts, we saw more of the audience than we did of her dancing! Where were the tight shots of just her? Whoever worked the switchboard really screwed up here.

As for Janet's set itself, I wish she had performed longer. She performed fewer songs than Salt N Pepa did and they weren't getting the night's biggest honor!

I did enjoy the glimpses of her I did get, and I loved that she featured her dancers in such a prominent way.

time flies.

I agree! The camera angles was absolutely HORRIBLE. Janet was completely lost in most of the shots.

I’m a pretty big Janet fan from way back, and I really liked her last album. That performance, though, brought me down. Not in a good way.
.
It was legacy act 101: do everything possible - backup dancers, surgery, lip syncs - to make us think it’s still 1993, and you’ve still “got it”. The problem is, of course, it’s not 1993. What’s new?
.
Has she ever seemed so alien? I’m glad she brought up God and metoo, but it felt like she teleported from Mars to get there. For those too young to remember: Janet was the normal one! She was the fun, human, relatable Jackson.
.
Someday, one of the great pop artists will find a way to age with grace. They’ll focus on what they’re good at - I consider Jackson a warm and sexy singer - and demonstrate what being 50 means to them. Other than ‘I still look 25 from some angles, right?’

I enjoyed the look back at her career thus far. She looked amazeballs.

My only issue with it was the choice of song. It seemed the medley held her back a bit. I don't think any performer puts out 100% at these award shows. It's a short time to expend the sort of energy one would at a concert. There's a medium to find between being boring and going too far.

I'm tired of hearing "Nasty", and even this newer arrangement that she's used since American Idol in 2009 or so (when she did "Nothing" and "Nasty"). It's become her "Material Girl". I would have liked to seen something like "What Have You Done For Me Lately", "Miss You Much", "Because of Love", "All Nite", "Feedback", "Burn It Up", and ending with "Love Will Never Do (Without You)". I mean, anything. I did love "Throb" and highlighting the dancers, but it seems more of a concert move. An award show audience cares about the artist and that 5 minutes they get, not their dancers. (In a concert, that would be different. Janet's always highlighted her crew.)

Ultimately I was happy she got the recognition she deserves. Jimmy Jam said it was long overdue, and I agree. At 52, she is going strong. And I love how she updated her own previous look:

The look also pulls from Sex and the City where Carrie Bradshaw had on a crop top and a green tutu.

She is more than deserving of this award.

However, I was not impressed by her performance. It was short and underwhelming.

I saw Janet on her "State of the World" tour a few months ago and I was bored to be honest through out most of the show as well. I saw her on her two previous tours before that and she was quite good but she seems to be phoning it in these days.

I don't know what happened. I know she's older now but I've also seen Madonna who is 8 years older than Janet and she didn't miss a beat when I saw her live on her last tour.

Anyway, Janet's setlist at "Billboard" was too short and I don't get performing "Throb" but not "Rhythm Nation" for a greatest hits set.

Kind of odd to me.

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

I loved Bruno's tribute speech to JJ. And his bow (or whatever the name is for what he was doing as shown in this photo) was very appropriate and reverent.

I love that song so much. It's intoxicating. She's performed it on Rock Withchu Tour, Number Ones Up Close & Personal (which I saw at Radio City Music Hall), Unbreakable Tour, and State of the World Tour. But I get you mean she isn't doing it on shows much. But then again, this was her first performance on TV in nine years. She finished the last tour, then married that asshole, had a baby and finally got herself back into the game. I think it should replace "Nasty" as one of the go-to songs. "Nasty" always has a place as the prequel to New Jack Swing, and is her own "Material Girl"*, but girl - letitgo.

* I referenced "Material Girl", because it's stuck to Madonna ever since she sang it, either as an unintentional moniker or a quick descriptive honorific. Janet has "Miss Jackson if you're nasty" attached to her in much the same way.
