Neo Soul - Lewis Taylor

Hi Guys,

When Neo Soul is discussed the usual names of Badu, D'Angelo and Maxwell pop up as the main innovators of this genre.

One other name should be included in my opinion. Lewis Taylor.

How great was his debut album.

I remember reading the herald sun in Melbourne when I was young and they used to have a section every thursday called Hit....I remember reading a review of Lewis Taylor and it made me track this CD ....yes CD down and it was mind blowing.

I know that Lewis Taylor has since retired from music.

Does anyone know why he retired? I remember reading some stuff that he was dealing with some issues.

Great talented artist.

Learned about Lewis right here on the org years ago...I think he jut got fed up with the b.s. of the music business.(what to look like/sound like/marketability, etc)...He still writes and records music from what I understand, but has no interest in releasing any of it...Talented dude.

Yes, big Lewis Taylor admirer here. That first album was extraordinary – it sounds like a dark mixture of classic soul and the UK trip-hop sound of the time (Tricky etc). Glowing reviews across the board. Lewis has stated that Marvin Gaye’s “Trouble Man” was a big influence on the album. Lewis in turn had a huge influence on D’Angelo, who actually invited him to work on Voodoo with him. It didn’t work out for some reason, but you can hear his influence on the sound.

His second album wasn’t so good, but he had so much potential, especially considering that his début was almost entirely self-produced and performed by him. I think that he travelled to America but just wasn’t comfortable with the directions that he was being pushed in. I’m not sure that he was really made for the limelight. I think that he continued to work as a session musician for a while, but he’s more or less retired now. I heard that he lives near Brighton in the UK. He did an interview a couple of years ago explaining everything – you should be able to find it on google.
