I'mma probably regret what I'm about to type, but I really think a ton of this SJ anger goes overboard. But, it really looks like it's okay if it's somebody (non-black) certain people wanna f (screw) make it to #1 on the charts using (black culture) music, wtf does that mean in today's sales anyway, but if it is somebody (non-black) other (quiet) people wanna f(screw) then it's appropriation. I mean if you have a cause then stand by it, but flipflopping based on the rise of your genitals is a moot point and you really make if so much harder for real issues to be taken seriously.

I wonder was white people bitching and moaning when Prince released "Jack U Off" "Little Red Corvette" "Lets Pretend Were Married" "I'm Yours" "Horny Toad" or singing "Whole Lotta Shaking Going On" because yall scallywags are extra when it comes to Bruno. Gtfoh. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

But Bruno Mars is Puerto Rican though.
Puerto Rico is ethnically mixed. He is a Puerto Rican who grew up in America. His Nuyorican style is authentic. Cultural appropriation is a ‘thing’ but the SJWs go overboard. This doesn’t apply to Bruno IMO

Not like rock is mainly performed by black people no matter how you look at it from the 1950's, let it go, its gone from 'us'...since rap took over. Thanks hip hop.

It's ironic Bruno has been picked up apart but they didn't bring up Robin Thicke, JT, Sam Smith, Adele etc. Nor was Bobby Caldwell, Joe Cocker, Teena Marie, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield to name a few. All these and more made soul/R&B records and Ive never heard anyone call out Joe and saying he was like copying or biting the style of other soul singers. I thought Bruno was accepted since hes not use any derogatory terms or slang in his music As an artist shouldn't he be free to mke any style of music. If someone is white they have to listen to just "white" music and not R&B, soul, hip hop etc. Music should be universal and colourless. I mean Prince blended many musical styles together so based of the argument he shouldnt have made Purple rain and stuck in the R&B lane. smh. The haters seem stuck on him taking the food of other artists plate so to speak. I call BS on this as when a song is good enough it crosses over and succeeds. Look at Kci and Jojos All my Life that was a huge hit. Had nothing to do with skin colour, they hit it out the park with the strength of the song. Any artist complaining need to up their game(s) up. Its just petty. Plus its not like Bruno is not working with black artists - Cardi B, Gucci Mane to name a few are on the remixes. Babyface wrote one of the songs on the album. It seems there's hate for no other reason than to hate on someone who's doing their thing and making a success of them self.

Exactly, I stated music should be universal and music should be colourless. Shouldnt matter what skin colour you are music should be for everybody and no one should be pigeonholed based on their skin tone. Good point pp4 too. Its very likely every artist will follow whats hot a d emulate it. If anything making a R&B album meant Bruno took a hit with record sales compared to his previous two records. For me its the album he personally wanted to make. Also making a retro R&B album has meant hes taken a hit with record sales so for me its Bruno paying homage. Outside of the NE biopic is 80s R&B a big trend?. Had Bruno started to rap and put out a trap album that would arguably be cultural appropriation then. Also I would assume white folks buying Bruno's album very likely already like R&B/soul music already so that argument is a moot point.

I'm eternally impressed by human beings' ability to find new and elaborate ways to make life harder than it needs to be. I can only put it down to the excess energy of youth. "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin

Babyface I'm very proud of [Mars] and his accomplishments. I had the opportunity to go into the studio and work with and write with him, and I had so much respect for his work ethic 'cause it was very close to how I did it, and how I do it. I think he's genius in his approach and one of the best entertainers we've had in a very, very long time. I consider Bruno in the same category with Prince and with Michael Jackson; He's one of those guys who can actually stand with those artists, and there aren't a lot of artists I can actually say that about and say it with confidence and feel like he would deserve to be on that same stage as them. I don't consider myself a fan but the kid has a few catchy songs and it's not like he's some instant microwave artist like most now. The kid has been working at his craft since he was 6. There's a clip of him performing on the Arsenio Hall show performing. Give the kid a break. Don't laugh at my funk

Wow, Prince never won an album of the year grammy? That's a damn shame! But I don't see the logic behind attacking Bruno for that. Like I said in another thread about the subject, I think we should focus on the industry and their lack of promotion when it comes to black artists/black music. You know what's funny tho? Eminem dropped his new album and the only songs they're playing here in germany is the one with Ed Sheeran and Beyonce on it. Or his songs that would pass as a mixture of pop and rap. They don't play his real Rap Jams, because, even if it's eminem, the music itself is too black. Or at least that's how it seems to me.
Bruno never showed disrespect to the genre or its creators, he aknowledged his influencers and even gave a shoutout to Baby Face, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis etc.

I think part of PP's point is you don't care about people glorifying complete trash but you care that someone doesn't have enough melanin in their skin for you to be ok with them making music with their 95% black band and producers. I don't think it's PP whose point is useless here. Change it one more time..

and this is why all these current age performers, white, black, hispanic, whoever it is and whatever their nationality, they need to learn how to orchestrate their own music and develop their own style, it would make for a better artist and a better music industry all round....
there wouldn't be these types of criticisms....
it would be more rewarding also knowing you've created something authentic....
rather than taking the lesser road already travelled......
the real question should be can anybody of today when they come of age make their own music....
there's one thing to be influenced by someone, but when it comes down to it, when the smoke clears, can they make their own music......
let's say sampling and interpolating would no longer be allowed...
THEN WHAT?....everyone is closing shop at that point
wo
they call out the past as OLD SCHOOL but continuously rely on it behind the scenes to help shape their sound or to draw interest......
it's a contradiction for the ages

The real issue is the need for todays artist which are replicating a practice of the past 30 years to really make and craft and shape their own music Why is this so difficult to do now Thats really what all this comes down to
