You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

You can just watch the documentary that came with Original 7ven CD to cover The Time. It's around 90 minutes long and Unsung averages 35-42 minutes without commercials. Here's a new interview by Monte Moir posted about a week ago

My all-time fav Unsung Episode was about Minnie Riperton (2009, Season 2, Ep 1). She was sooo ahead of her time and her daughter Maya Rudolph is awesome too. And even though she is remembered for Loving You (1975) IMO Come To My Garden is a work of art, and I loved how that episode showcased her incredible talent, and what a unique person she was.

Who would they get to speak for him? A Joe Simon episode would be good, but since he became a preacher, I don't know if he wants to talk about his secular music career. Unlike Al Green, Joe never went back to secular music. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Vicki Anderson of the James Brown Revue (toured with Joe for a year and I'm actually interviewing her in 2 weeks) I think his wife is still with us. A bunch of his contemporaries are still around. Jerry Butler (Joe wrote for him) Smokey, Gene Chandler, Little Richard (opened for Richard) Berry Gordy (Joe was on Ana Records) probaly some band members. PRINCE: Always and Forever

I think Unsung tried to get Stephanie Mills, but she turned them down. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. She explained that she doesn't like the concept of the show. She doesn't like the term "unsung",saying that it implies that an artist never had success or became popular.I can sorta see her point. Also,I don't think that she wants to talk about "the dirt"....the bad side of her life and career, which this show likes to get into.

Those two definitly deserve to be highlighted I've heard for yrs that once Diana Ross left The Surpremes Syreeta was considered for her replacement. Of course that didn't happen but I've always thought she was the better singer out of all the members of the Surpremes easily.

I'm glad she didn't & instead became part of Stevie's Wonerlove camp. Her first two albums should always be a conversation piece when one talks about Stevie's classic period, because both projects really highlighted Stevie as a great producer/composer. I love her entire discography but the first two albums will always be favorites of mine.

I am SO WITH YOU on Deborah! SUCH a sweetheart in real life AND a POWERFUL voice! I met her in Boston at a CD signing on my birthday in 2002 ("The Morning After") and I felt SO LOVED as a fan! Her career DEFINITELY fell off too quickly. The Dinah Washington tribute album, "Destination Moon" could have waited another 15 years IMHO. Hard to have to call her (gulp) "unsung" tho. It's heartbreaking. She came out SO STRONG and just disappeared into oblivion. Not even Jam/Lewis could save her on her "Promise" album despite such strong material. Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Stephanie Mills had it 100% right! They approached her and she was deeply insulted. She stated that she "was NEVER unsung" and that she "had a GREAT career!," which she DID. She's legendary. I would have been insulted too. LOL! Why not tell Janet Jackson that SHE'S unsung??? LOL! Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Indeed.Stephanie had an incredible career.During the entire 80s decade, she was a regular on the R&B charts and on R&B radio. One hit after another.I wish that the show would have found a better title because Stephanie was in no way "unsung".

Two things Stephanie said she ain't gonna do...Tell the Public if she slept with Michael back-in-the-day (she said they dated, but out of Respect she'll NEVER reveal anything beyond that) and Green-light an Unsung Docu-episode...

Its a shame. Her legacy is bigger than dating MJ, I hope she reconsiders her stance about doing it, or doing a documentary in general.
