Was saying "Sexy never left" worthy of a JT diss. JT's reaction==the arrogance of youth

I was thinking about the recent articles about Timberlake performing at PP and writers bringing up their 'supposed beef" and basically stating that Prince started it with his "Sexy never left" comment. Justin Timberlake was at the 3121 parties. Presumably, he heard 3121 songs (at least Black Sweat)--maybe even prior to the release of his own album (3121 was released, I believe, 9 months, earlier than LoveSounds) Prince's album came out first. Sexy Back is a song that declares that sexy music is non-existent. The song is probably just a song about bragging...so P braggng about his own sexiness is really no worse. I think all P was doing was staking his claim, remimding folks that he released a sexy album that year (which came out first and was also electr-funk). He was reminding younger folk that the old man still has it. Timberlake's reaction in my opinon was completely overdone and indicative of someone hypersensitive to even mild criticism. Dissing him in a song (by saying P was just jealous he hadn't come up with it first? What? He most certainly had) and then making fun of his height when he should have been honoring hin (Golden Globes award for Happy Feet), that is some immature shit. I think JT has grown since then. I think he is a funny talented man who worked hard and maybe his feelings were hurt but his overreaction is indicative of the arrogance of youth. Imagine if an older artist got on P's case for saying that his Musicology tour was bringing real music back by saying "well, real music never left" . Would P write a diss song? I doubt it. He might just acknowledge that real music is out there but harder to find, and if he liked the older artist enough, he might have even invited him to join him on stage.

When did JT diss Prince? And how do we know he was dissing Prince and not someone else. And if it was Prince how do we know it’s wasnt all in good fun and not a serious diss?

Lryics of Give it to me...

If Sexy never left, then why is everyone on my shit?

Don't hate on me just because you didn't come up with it...

Basically, Timberlake is saying that he sold better so Prince must not have been bringing the sexy and that P is jealous so being a hater. I want to tell Timberlake that Prince never hated on your dumb ass..He is just saying he is a sexy mvther fucker himself and has been for years. Hell, I love the song SexyBack and don't take it too seriously but JT can't bring something back that already exists. Plus Prince was probably teasing and JT didn't need to tease back with such disrespect. P never dissed his music in the line or his looks or anything. He staked his claim..that's all.

I like Timberlake but he was being a bit of a baby and needed to grow up...so your inspiration wasn't in love with the fact that you are claiming to me the lone perpetuator of sexiness in a song so he checked you a bit. Making fun of his height at an awards ceremony and then writing a diss line was a bit much as a response..

Timberlake got his feelings hurt by P's original statement about sexy never left, so he tried to retaliate ... problem for Timberlake is, nobody cared about, or believed, or supported, his butthurt replies... its like when your 3 year old son steps on your toe while walking by... you dont feel that shit...nothing to see here...

I think JT was trying to get P back in the game (on the radio) the way P kinda messed with George Clinton with Tricky, I don't think JT of Timbaland was out for Prince. Now Lil Mo was disrespectful to Prince but again these youngsters can't hang with Prince & is no where near his level of Pop Star

who cares? what A says about B always says so much more about A than B ... it wasn't worth thinking or talking about it in 2007 ... neither is it today ... go and listen to some good music instead ... I recommend billy jack bitch lol

I always thought the "Don't hate on me just because you didn't come up with it..." was kinda funny.

It was just a diss, its not that serious. We are talking about being "sexy". Come on now! lol

GET OUT OF MY HEAD! I was reading these threads last night on the Org.

JT's reaction probably was the arrogance of youth. It was an interesting time because FutureSex/LoveSounds was full of Prince & The Time influences. At least two NPG members were in his touring band (Mike Scott still is; Blackwell has passed). I think it was uncalled for, though. Them dissing Scott Storch should have been the message in that song, and it was with Timbaland's verse. Storch is such a wannabe dickbag. Storch claimed he was the real producer on "Cry Me A River", a claim everyone else denies.

There is also claim that JT dissed Janet in his verse, talking about her on TV. She had said on Oprah that she had considered JT a friend, but "friends don't leave you out in the cold like that". She challenged his claims post-Super Bowl, and they had both acknowledged that they hadn't talked since the incident. His line:

Could you speak up and stop the mumbling
I don't think you're getting clear.
Sitting on the top it's hard to hear you from way up here.
I saw you tryin to act cute on tv just let me clear the air.
We missed you on the charts last week
Damn that's right, you wasn't there

...was thought to address her "whining" on TV about it. But even JT said she got 90% of the brunt of that blame, and he got 10%. Janet's sales for Damita Jo and 20 Y.O. had suffered due to the Super Bowl incident. And while JT didn't have an album out for another two years, he was certainly enjoying the success of Justified and working with other artists writing and producing hit songs. It was a very cold statement on his part toward her. The odd thing is, "Give It To Me" was out in 2007. The Super Bowl & her subsequent interviews about it (Oprah, Letterman) was 2004/5. Why he chose to go after her in 2007 is sort of a mystery.

I suppose at his age and the point he was at in his solo career, he sort of had to clap back, as not to be one-upped by anyone. He was still developing himself as a solo artist (again, only one solo record by 2004, the next not for another two years). He wasn't going to be duped by anyone. Hanging around who he hung around probably fed that arrogance as well. But to go after a funny comment like "sexy never left" comes across as childish.

If sexy never left, then why's everybody on my shi-it-it?
Don't hate on me just because you didn't come up with it.

Not so much hate on Prince's part, as just a public ribbing. What they both have in common is a lot of dick swingin' braggadocio.

I've never seen SexyBack as a song that declares that other music isn't sexy or that other artists have forgotten how to make sexy music.

For me that song was just about approaching a girl, with something slick to say. He's saying forget about all those other guys that you've dated or are after you, *I'm* gonna bring the sexiness back into your life and show you a real sexy time. Check out the lyrics:

---

I'm bringin' sexy back,
Them other boys don't know how to act,
I think it's special, what's behind your back,
So turn around and I'll pick up the slack

---

So JT is basically saying those other cats didn't know how to seduce you but I do. He then takes it further:

---

Dirty babe
You see these shackles, baby
I'm your slave
I'll let you whip me if I misbehave
It's just that no one makes me feel this way

---

I don't think this song is anything to do with the music scene, it's just a song about getting some pussy . And P's reply about "Sexy never left" was just a joke about how he's always been sexy, I don't think there's a diss or anything between P and JT.

Prince fired a shot so I doubt he cared about any replies.

He was hated on while he was alive though by younger artists.

Pink famously told him to F-off.

JT always made it clear how much he admired and respected Prince, diss or not. He was even performing live with NPG band members.

Yeah and the funny thing is regardless of shade or disses, JT is totally stealing from the PRINCE book of need to sell now. As Prince did with his 2004 tour and had that center around the Hall of Fame JT now has an album just in time for the superbowl, the biggest stage in the world, new material sales for a few weeks etc..all calculated now JT is in that boat of the "old guy" trying to be IN again

Yeah, he definitely attempted to diss Prince, but the entire thing was silly. To me, it was unnecessary for JT to even respond to Prince's comment...PAY RESPECT TO YOUR ELDERS! Especially when you told Rollin Stone that the reason you named your album "Future/Sex/Whatever" was because "Purple Rain was already taken." Check yo self, youngster!
