Summer: The Donna Summer Musical coming to Broadway

Broadway audiences are in for some “Hot Stuff” when the new bio-show Summer: The Donna Summer Musical sets up house at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in 2018. Featuring a book by Colman Domingo, Robert Cary and Des McAnuff, choreography by Sergio Trujillo and direction by McAnuff, the production will start previews on March 28 with an opening slated for April 23.

"Donna Summer had the kind of voice that comes along perhaps once in a quarter-century," McAnuff told Broadway.com in an exclusive statement. "Her collaboration with Giorgio Moroder in the studio had an influence on recorded music that will last for many years to come. She not only had an effect on pop culture but she changed the roles of women in the industry. Her story is as impactful today as it was when she was living it."

Told through the dramatic lens of her final concert, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical presents the complexities and conflicts the famed songwriter and singer faced in her meteoric rise and descent. The show features a score with more than 20 of Summer's classic hits including “Love to Love You, Baby,” “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff.”

Summer: The Donna Summer Musical will include scenic design by Robert Brill, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Howell Binkley, sound design by Gareth Owen and projections by Sean Nieuwenhuis.

The current La Jolla Playhouse production of Summer: The Donna Summer Musicalfeatures Tony winner LaChanze, Ariana DeBose and Storm Lever playing the title role at different points in her life. Casting for the Broadway production will be announced at a later date.

Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

This, I guess, is the next best thing to the play she had talked about doing starring herself.

Hey Joe, are you from San Diego too? Did you see it? I wanted to, but money is tight.

I haven't seen it yet,but the idea of a Donna Summer musical is bittersweet to me.During the 90s and into the 2000s,she was trying to get her own musical, titled Ordinary Girl, off the ground. It never happened confused The new musical seems promising, but it's just sad that she'a not around to see it.
