Michael Anthony Says Time is Right for Van Halen to Tour With Both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar

By Debra Filcman May 11, 2017 Ultimate Classic Rock

Michael Anthony is now suggesting that a Van Halen tour featuring both David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar could happen.

“I think now’s the time, especially if you listen to some of the interviews [Hagar has been] doing or whatever now,” the bassist said in an appearance earlier this week on “Trunk Nation,” a SiriusXM Volume show. “Right now, he’s saying the proper way to do a Van Halen tour, he’s saying, ‘Let’s do it with Dave and myself.'”

Sammy Hagar made a similar suggestion back in March, adding that the competition between the two frontmen would make fans “die and go to heaven.” Listen to the entire interview with Michael Anthony here.

Anthony also answered the much-discussed question of whether Roth had donated a cool $10,000 to the fundraising team honoring his infant grandson who passed away.

Shortly after his grandson Rex died of heart disease at just 15 days old, Anthony posted to his Facebook page that he was joining this year’s Walk L.A. team, Rex and the Heart Beaters, to benefit Children’s Hospital L.A. He set the fundraising goal of $3,450, which was quickly surpassed by the $10,000 donation listed as being from “Dave Roth.”

A very appreciative Anthony says he emailed the donor and asked whether it was really his old bandmate, and received the response, “Hi, Michael. It’s David. Sorry about your loss. I’ll be in touch.”

A co-founding member of Van Halen, Anthony last played with Hagar, and Alex and Eddie Van Halen in 2004, when he reportedly took a pay cut and signed away his rights to the band name and logo. In 2007, Roth returned to Van Halen for a tour with Alex, Eddie and Wolfgang Van Halen. Anthony has more recently played with Hagar in Chickenfoot and the Circle.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Uhm. Yes. Roth is a clown. Hagar is so much better. The only way I ever would see Van Halen with Roth is if Hagar would be there too. And Anthony.

I respect both Sammy and David. Sammy is down-to-earth cool guy with great voice, I love his work with Van Halen, 'Why Can't This Be Love' is one of the best rock songs ever to me. 'WHOAAAA' - this is what I call the way to start first verse of the song. 'Here it comes that funny feeling again winding me up inside everytime we touch' - if the song would end here I still be satisfied. It doesn't have to be long, let the quality be good, right? wink

David is totally opposite of Sammy and I admire him too. My God, this is one of the best frontmen ever! Charisma, wit, sense of humour, style, looks - that mixture is just magic, just add a touch of blonde hair (which is really a touch nowadays, saddly) and you have the Powerpuff Dave. Bubbles to me. <3

But weren't they on tour together (without the rest of Van Halen) at the beggining of the 00's? I remember Howard Stern interview with them both and they talked about it. And then I heard how it all crashed down with a huge explosion of clash of the titans.

I mean, if I'd go to Van Halen show, I would go to Dave and Sammy concert, but separately. No need to mix the chemistry of both, 'cause it gets kinda heavy.

Yes. They did tour together and there was no love lost between them. Hagar doesn't think too much of Roth as person. And Roth kind things Hagar stole his band. I really have no desire to see Roth, but really, them touring together would be fun. Just like Helloween is doing later this year. A tour with both singers. And since Sammy doesn't really like to do the Roth stuff anyway and Roth obviously won't do any Hagar stuff, this would be awesome. I would love to see Van Halen with Hagar one more time. While I like WCTBL too, my favourite would be Dreams. That song is just amazing. And of course the heavily underrated Balance album.

I saw Ice-T back in the Day, and it was a 3 hour Show. Halfway through the Show (He started out as a straight Hip-Hop Show), a black backdrop fell, and it was Body Count time!!! Holy Sh*t!!!

As far as Van Halen featuring Sam & Dave; one Singer starts, the other Singer finishes. Alternate when/if possible. And YES- Michael Anthony on Bass (His Vocals as well as Bass were missed when i saw VH in 2007)!!!

cool cool cool cool cool

Won't happen, and rightfully so. The only thing any real VH fan wants is for Michael to be back for at least a tour so we can see the original band. Wolfie is good sport, but come on...even he's gotta know what the fans want. But then again, Eddie isn't the most reasonable of people, and the dude can hold a grudge. As for Sammy "Only time will tell if we stand the test of time" Hagar? In the words of Robert Christgau: He's "The biggest shmuck in rock". What a dubious honor. WINGS, NOT RINGS PEOPLE!

Get in your mouse, and get out of here!

WOW! this is the first I've heard of that. Thanks for the HELLOWEEN news.

I just saw them last year at the Avalon, and it's a rare treat to have seen them in the states. I remember missing them in high school due to a touring stop

Yes. Pumpkins united. http://pumpkins-united.he...nited.html Should be a treat for the fans. It would be awesome if Van Halen could do the same.

Gary Cherone was a victim of EDDY's bloated ego. And then Van Halen ripped him to shreds because they were a "Ballad" group though if those fans heard some of Extreme's stuff, they rocked harder than Van Halen had in eons. David's voice is SHOT everywhere I saw him it was bad the songs needed to be adjusted rather than have the guy try to hit nuts from back in the day. Overall Sammy still can nail songs so it would be interesting to do a set of one and then the other and then join at the end, BUT knowing these clowns they will FIGHT over who goes first and gets more time.

Well, weren't all of them (especially Sammy, Mikey and Gary) victims of his bloated ago? Eddie put them on the map, but also ruined everything.

I think Sammy was on the map before Eddie, he did bring him a lot more mainstream, but Gary did not benefit from Eddy at all, he was on the map long before, and that album did nothing for him nor the band

Yes. I know. I meant the band (Alex, Dave and Mike). And then he screwed it up. For them and the joining Members.

I used to hear Hole Hearted a whole lot on the radio and remember seeing the video on MTV a lot too. Both songs went Top 5 on the Hot 100. Jimmy Fallon & Jack Black recreated the More Than Words video, it's them actually singing.
