I pulled this CD out yesterday after having not heard it in awhile. Some excellent jams on this one! One of the strongest tracks is "Funky Kind (Gonna Knock It Down)" which sounds like Prince had something to do with it (listen to those drums and bass).

I found critics approaching this record from a love or hate relationship. Rolling Stone panned it, while some called it one of the best records of '96. To me it is quite the satisfying listen from beginning to end. I was listening to Get Your Funk On the other day actually. Which for some reason the bass reminds me of Momma What's A Funkadelic sped up. Skeet on bass on Funky Kind. Interesting side note on the song. The only time I ever saw a crowd turn on GC was when he tried to play the song live early Ina set in Greenville SC about Fall 96. Mugs weren't having it and actually started booing. The man was physically and mentally unnerved from the stage. Only time I ever seen him loose his cool. It shocked him and me both. He turned and looked back at Skeet who kind of shrugged it off. I thought the chyt was jamming but that crowd came for Flashlight lol. When I first heard Summer Swim I said well this is gonna be the smash of the summer. Song did not even chart. WTF!?!? With the P's (both George & Prince), it seems you never know. I never heard Prince to be on either Cinderella Theory or TAPOAFOM. But who knows? George has said he asked him for more presence on "Finger". Hard to tell whose on any of the Funkadelic material though. They are now saying Eddie Hazel is all over Motor Booty Affair. I just heard from a pretty reputable source that Boogie Mosson's brother Larry was all over America Eats on rhythm guitar with nary a mention in any liner notes. | |
