I would say Madonna first, larger discography, that transends the generations. . She also did a very great job in presenting an experience, living it out even, translating what was happening in culture and society. . Her Erotica era Bedtime Stories era Ray of Light era Music & Confessions on the Dancefloor were awesome times .
Janet is a good 2nd, but she never put out the same amount. And I can only go by her Control onward years. Like a lot of 70s/80s artists she did very well in translating you somewhere. And a lotof what I said about Madonna's connects with Janets. Just that Janet doesn't have the same volume. BUT her first 2 albums are a strong 100% for me, I can listen from start to finish(except for He Doesn't Even Know I'm Alive). I skip over song on Janet & Velvet Rope . Control Nasty What Have You Done For Me Lately You Can Be Mine Pleasure Principle When I Think of You Let's Wait Awhile Funny How Time Flies, *Diamonds & Making Love In the Rain, Rhythm Nation State of the World the Knowledge Miss You Much Love Will Never Do, Living In a World the Did not Make Alright Black Cat Lonely Come Back To Me Some Day Is Tonight That's the Way Love Goes If Throb New Agenda Because of Love Again Anytime Any Place Bside On & On Got Till It's Gone My Need Go Deep Free Zone Anything, Come On Get Up China Love Someone To Call My Lover Twenty Foreplay Rock With You Night . For me Control Rhythm Nation 1814 Janet & Velvet Rope are the era's of superior discography... . 3rdly is Ms Carey. Mariah is a great songstress. I actually prefer her house remixes with David Morales. I like that her remix discography is greater than Madonna's and Janet's in that Mariah actually redoes the vocals. Her pentecostal church background really stands out on these. But her albums as a whole never did it for me. She has some great ballads too

You are very right. Mariah's work with David Morales is exceptional and put her on god-like status on the dancefloor. He think did "Say Something" as his final bow out before he retired. Love the re-recorded vocals and prominent use of her background vocalists always taking us to church on each remix.

Madonna | |

Madonna Then Janet But it's close between the two of them Then further down Mariah - Both Madonna & Janet don't have big powerful voices which I think makes them work harder to make songs that suit their abilities.

Only one of these artist's catalogue (for the most part) does not sound dated. Janet.

The better question is which has the least weak album catalog and I would go with Madonna. Mariah for the most part is a not a good album maker at all and I would put Britney or Katy Perry on this list before her. Janet is a victim of bloated albums in the 90's to me she would be the strongest if someone pressed the edit button oh her. So that leaves Madonna, though she does have a "Control" in her catalog she does have "Like A prayer" which to me tops anything Janet has. Mariah has 4 good albums: Mariah Carey, Daydream, Butterfly and The Emancipation of Mimi. She has no great albums. Janet's '86-01, '15 albums are as good as a female artist's discography can get, but man oh man do Damita Jo, 20 YO and Discipline suck. People here defend them because they are from a legend but the truth is the talentless female artists of today are putting out better albums than those turds. Madonna has several albums that are 40 - 80% filler (True Blue, Erotica, Bedtime Stories, MDNA) but Like a Prayer, Ray of Light and COAD are perfect albums and her seemingly never ending string of 1980's hits (up through 1990's Vogue) are unmatched creatively in the history of popular music.

There's enough albums tracks from DJ, 20yo and Discipline to make a very solid album, but the only songs that were good enough to be Janet singles (given her extraordinary catalogue) were I Want You and Rock With You. Island Life and Daybreak could be hits but they were still average compared to her past work. Make Me was a great followup it's a shame that couldn't be a hit. Unbreakable is great if she never records again I'm so happy she left with that one and not Discipline.

Sanctuary, Inside of Me and Love Tried To Welcome Me are wonderful songs. Secret Garden from Erotica album is amongst her best songs in my opinion.

Those songs sound like elevator music to me. Erotica has several good songs aside from the singles, Secret Garden being one of them.

They've all got classics, and albums fans love (though they didn't sell well). The question is - how many madonna albums can we regard as complete misfires, ala glitter and Damita jo? For me: mdna and rebel heart. . I think it's a draw.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Agree with you on MDNA but not Rebel Heart. While the latter was somewhat of a commercial failure, it actually several good songs on it that helped one get past some of the filler. Not her best, but far from an embarrassment.

Janet.
Most people would pick Madonna because of the consistency and diversity of her catalog. However, Janet's Control, RN, Janet and VR have been far more influential imo. Don't get me wrong, Madonna has classics and influence as well but I see more of Janet's catalog influence on todays generation of pop stars. RN alone has been far more influential than any Madonna's album and no other female pop star has successfully crafted a artistic political/dance/socially conscious album since RN IMO. Madonna may have more diverse and consistent albums but none are as timeless and influential as those four Janet albums that have really served and serve as a blue print for R&B/POP female pop stars. I really do love Madonna's music though and I think musically it can go either way because they both have iconic and classic albums.
