I would say Madonna first, larger discography, that transends the generations.
Even the dated stuff, which isn't always a bad thing, gives you the sense of nostalgia and transports you someplace, I heard Papa Don't Preach on the radio the other day and it was still strong and convincing. Everybody Angel, Dress You Up Crazy For U Lucky Star Like a Virgin Into the Groove Open Your Heart, Live To Tell, I'll Remember Oh Father Justify My Love Erotica Rain Deeper & Deeper Bad Girl In This Life This Used To Be My Playground Secret Bedtime Stories, Take a Bow, Drowned World, Ray of Light, Candy Perfume Girl, Skin, Sky Fits Heaven Little Star Music, Runaway Lover, Impressive Instant, I Deserve It, Don't Tell Me, What It Feels Like For A Girl, Hollywood, Intervention, Hung Up Sorry Future Lovers Candy Shop Falling Free Dance Tonight Miles Away

.

She also did a very great job in presenting an experience, living it out even, translating what was happening in culture and society.

.

Her Erotica era Bedtime Stories era Ray of Light era Music & Confessions on the Dancefloor were awesome times

.

Janet is a good 2nd, but she never put out the same amount. And I can only go by her Control onward years. Like a lot of 70s/80s artists she did very well in translating you somewhere. And a lotof what I said about Madonna's connects with Janets. Just that Janet doesn't have the same volume. BUT her first 2 albums are a strong 100% for me, I can listen from start to finish(except for He Doesn't Even Know I'm Alive). I skip over song on Janet & Velvet Rope

.

3rdly is Ms Carey. Mariah is a great songstress. I actually prefer her house remixes with David Morales. I like that her remix discography is greater than Madonna's and Janet's in that Mariah actually redoes the vocals. Her pentecostal church background really stands out on these. But her albums as a whole never did it for me. She has some great ballads too

You are very right. Mariah's work with David Morales is exceptional and put her on god-like status on the dancefloor. He think did "Say Something" as his final bow out before he retired. Love the re-recorded vocals and prominent use of her background vocalists always taking us to church on each remix.

Mariah is definately NYC and understands House for sure

She kills it. I woull love a Mariah (Ray of Light) type album but with those classe House and Tribal touches w/ David Morales

Madonna
Then Janet
But it's close between the two of them
Then further down Mariah
-
Both Madonna & Janet don't have big powerful voices which I think makes them work harder to make songs that suit their abilities.

I'd say in terms of essential albums all music fans should have in their collections, it has to be Madge ... True Blue, Like A Prayer, Erotica, Ray of Light, Confessions On A Dancefloor ... that's five must have albums right there, and there's still a ton of classic tracks that aren't even on these (Vogue, Into The Groove, Justify My Love, etc).

Janet and Mariah can't match that.

Control, Rhythm Nation, Janet, Velvet Rope and Unbreakable easily match those.

And let's be honest, you only "need" those albums (by both artists), if you like that kind of music. Otherwise that list would be way smaller.

nextedition said:

Madonna has a lot of strong singles. But her albums as full never really did it for me, except for Like a Prayer.

Janet made less albums, but Control till All for U (and Unbreakable) were all amazing albums.

For me every song on those albums rock.

Exactly. So therefore it doesn't matter that Madonna has more albums.

I'm clueless about Mariah. Know only 2 albums, so I will shut up about her.

The better question is which has the least weak album catalog and I would go with Madonna. Mariah for the most part is a not a good album maker at all and I would put Britney or Katy Perry on this list before her. Janet is a victim of bloated albums in the 90's to me she would be the strongest if someone pressed the edit button oh her. So that leaves Madonna, though she does have a "Control" in her catalog she does have "Like A prayer" which to me tops anything Janet has.

Mariah has 4 good albums: Mariah Carey, Daydream, Butterfly and The Emancipation of Mimi. She has no great albums. Janet's '86-01, '15 albums are as good as a female artist's discography can get, but man oh man do Damita Jo, 20 YO and Discipline suck. People here defend them because they are from a legend but the truth is the talentless female artists of today are putting out better albums than those turds. Madonna has several albums that are 40 - 80% filler (True Blue, Erotica, Bedtime Stories, MDNA) but Like a Prayer, Ray of Light and COAD are perfect albums and her seemingly never ending string of 1980's hits (up through 1990's Vogue) are unmatched creatively in the history of popular music.

And part of that is her not working as closely with Jam & Lewis. The great thing about her discography is that despite having the same producers for years, her albums never sounded the same. There's nothing on Control that sounds like janet,. or RN1814 that sounds like All For You. Of the three you listed, you could probably get one great album from those records. "This Body" from 20YO is just Jermaine Dupri shit. How she listened to some of those tracks and thought "Oh hey, this sounds good" is beyond me. Discipline was a stronger effort than 20YO, and Damita Jo lacked a heavier groove throughout, except "All Nite" and "R&B Junkie". Those three definitely were a dip in her creative output, IMO.

Bedtime Stories, to me, was far from filler. It was silky and wonderful throughout. Erotica has a few tracks I could do without, but I appreciate the juxtaposition of the rougher production on it, compared to B.S.'s silkier approach. I'd agree that despite it's popularity, True Blue had some bland pop songs throughout. It's her Controversy to me. Transitional album. Good stuff on it, but it leads to something much better because it was made in a moment of growth and change. It's a bit like a kid buying pants in the middle of a growth spurt. It's good for a short bit, then you have to move onto your big boy pants.

The singles of Bedtime Stories are her best set from an individual album IMO, but I really only like the singles and Survival. The rest is total filler to me.

Nice to see someone who agrees with me about True Blue, I've seen many fans say that's when she his her stride but the first two albums were better than it IMO.

There's enough albums tracks from DJ, 20yo and Discipline to make a very solid album, but the only songs that were good enough to be Janet singles (given her extraordinary catalogue) were I Want You and Rock With You. Island Life and Daybreak could be hits but they were still average compared to her past work. Make Me was a great followup it's a shame that couldn't be a hit. Unbreakable is great if she never records again I'm so happy she left with that one and not Discipline.

I would even dare to say her debut album is a skooch better than Like A Virgin, too. It's almost like M's albums go the way Prince's did for a while. Average, good, OMG. Average, good, OMG.

I loved the remixes from Bedtime Stories. There's a great mix of "Secret" (might be the Sound factory mix). "Sanctuary" and "Don't Stop" should have been singles, or at least had a couple of remixes as a b-side. I really can't think of a bad song on that album, IMO. And Me'shell on there. ZOMG!

They've all got classics, and albums fans love (though they didn't sell well).
The question is - how many madonna albums can we regard as complete misfires, ala glitter and Damita jo? For me: mdna and rebel heart.

Agree with you on MDNA but not Rebel Heart. While the latter was somewhat of a commercial failure, it actually several good songs on it that helped one get past some of the filler. Not her best, but far from an embarrassment.

Most people would pick Madonna because of the consistency and diversity of her catalog. However, Janet's Control, RN, Janet and VR have been far more influential imo. Don't get me wrong, Madonna has classics and influence as well but I see more of Janet's catalog influence on todays generation of pop stars. RN alone has been far more influential than any Madonna's album and no other female pop star has successfully crafted a artistic political/dance/socially conscious album since RN IMO. Madonna may have more diverse and consistent albums but none are as timeless and influential as those four Janet albums that have really served and serve as a blue print for R&B/POP female pop stars. I really do love Madonna's music though and I think musically it can go either way because they both have iconic and classic albums.
