I love the song "Right And Hype" (1989) by the girl group Abstrac.It was produced by Teddy Riley (the king of that whole New Jack Swing sound).

I don't think the "New Jack Swing" style holds up well over time. A lot of the cuts I liked back in the late 80's /early 90's just don't sound right to me when I hear them now. BBD, AL B Sure, etc, are just about painful to listen to now. The worst was when acts like Earth, Wind & Fire, The Bar Kays and Gap Band, tried going "New Jack". Guy along with a few other new jack acts still sound nice to me but over all I think that was a dark period for black music. It's really when the beat replaced the baseline in black music. Shit they were throwing back-beats on back-beats. I mean damn, how many beats do you need in one song? Hearing it now it just all sounds so plastic and hallo.

The crowning glories of the era to me are Guy's debut and Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel" LP. Other good stuff can be found on R. Kelly's debut (Including the new jack classic She's Got That Vibe) and 12 Play as well as Michael Jackson's Dangerous in parts.

at 1st, he was only trying to sound like Prince, just as Johnny "just got paid" Kemp & COUNTLESS, forgettable others did..

but then, somehow, someway, Keith got the idea that he could sell more records (& get more women) if he simply

his way through a song..

& that's what he basically did.

I have some "new jack hits" that I still dig, & am in the process of adding to my collection as cds..


I remember the group TODAY..
I really liked that 1 song (I think) they did, "why you gettin' funky on me"..
wasn't this on a Kid'N'Play soundtrack or something?

GUY is basically acknowledged as the "inventors" of new jack swing. I mainly liked "I wanna get with u" & "just a fantasy".. 2 REAL "pelvic thrusters! I think 1 of these 2 had the line "have the whole thing sewn up like a shirt", which I thought was clever..
Teddy Riley did some songs with the vocoder "talk box", which of course makes me think of the 1 & ONLY Roger Troutman..
ah- also "do me right" was cool, but this was more like "new jack lite"..


also in that same "pelvic thrust" sub-category of new jack swingers was WRECKS-IN-EFFECT with their jam called "new jack swing"


then, lastly, & even thought they might not be "officially" categorized as from the "new jack swing" genre..

I (also) really liked "word to the mother", the sort of "New Edition reunion" song, with Johnny Gill's piano playing & vocals at the beginning.. & I like that part where they put in song titles of everyone's hit songs to that point:

imho..new jack swing was a sound that reflected the times..when it was out i thought it was very commercial and i wished that brothers would pick up some instruments..well after re-visiting new jack swing, i noticed the instrumentation (there were solos...where can you find that in today's 100% programmed bs)..also..i think that new jack swing or teddy rile's sound peaked with mj's dangerous..those tracks were slamming!!!
