For those who do not think Madonna is attractive, please explain why.

I have heard some people say they don't think she's goodlooking and I was curious to know why.

What don't you like about her looks (features, etc.)?

Just curious to know...

I think unattractive or ugly is thrown around quickly. Madonna's eyebrows were always a fairly strong look, but I would just describe her as average. The reason perhaps the hate is thrown around her is as at times one of (and possiibly still) the biggest celebrities in the world, who is she compared too? She is compared to actresses, pop singers, models and other famous beauties. In this league personally she is not as attractive.

She is nearing 60, and rather than dressing with class, she dresses in fish nets and tries to dress like she is in her teens. The comparison is not flattering, she is like the octogenarian Mae West, still doing the maneater routine. It would be like Prince at this age doing the dirty mind trench coat, stockings and bikini briefs. So overall she has always been pretty without being stunning, and there are plenty of beautiful woman. If I would have to say what makes her unattractive,

I would say it is her personality. The fake English accent, the "kill the staff" sense of superiority, the sense that she is a sphinx with no secrets that always tries to shock and astonish. Just like when she learned guitar rudiments and acted like it was an accomplishment. I enjoyed her early hits, borderline, luck star, holiday, get into the groove, material girl, like a virgin, papa don't preach, the like a prayer album, justify my love (was dope), erotica (is maybe my favorite album) and bedtime stories was a nice album too. I like "Who's that girl" , so all in all she has done a lot of stuff I really like. But if you had to summarise why I dislike her, it is how she comes across in her "truth or dare" film. That to me epitomises the ugly qualities of her personality.

She was ok when she was younger. 80's Madonna is the best Madonna. These days she's starting to look like what you'd get if Iggy Pop became a transvestite.

She's gotten older and hasn't aged gracefully, that's why.

I'd say because her inner lack of beauty has been affecting her outer beauty for some time and no amount of plastic surgery can keep her from looking like a witch.

Why does it matter whether people find her attractive or not?

Where is the thread about whether people find Mick Jagger, George Michael, Elton John, or Paul McCartney attractive or not?

Why are female musicians always defined and judged by their looks?

The OP has created previous threads debating the looks of men so at least he's not misogynistic about his superficial posts.

And, for what it's worth, George Michael is fantastic, but the other men you mentioned are hideous wink

Fair point. But why should anyone male or female be defined by their looks?

I'm a huge Madonna fan, but for her music and her personality and how she looks only in terms of her fashion and style. But then I'm a straight woman so I don't spend a lot of time evaluating the looks of other straight women.

I was reading an interview with Shirley Manson of Garbage and she was talking about how people today are so invested in how they look and spend so much time trying to get people to like their selfies on instagram, and how that really is a waste of time. Why praise someone for their looks when if they are beautiful it's really down to genetics, not something they have control over. Why not develop other aspects of who you are that you do have control over?

I just don't feel it's nice to call people hideous or comment negatively on their looks. It verges on bullying to me.

I think most musicians are fairly attractive, but not gorgeous on the level of models. Are there any truly ugly people who become successful musicians, for the most part no, not in the video age.

thats why in the 60s (when I was a kid) and 70s, it didn't

matter what a particular artist looked like, black or white,

fat or skinny or how old, or young they were...

you just liked them for the voice, or music on the radio

it seems like until MTV it didn't matter

Good point. Madonna is responsible for making pop music superficial and fashion oriented (Material Girl/her wardrobe) so this is what it comes to.

I always thought her most attractive period was 1998 to 2005 ... she looked amazing on the Ray of Light cover, and during the Re-Invention Tour.

I like that she's never gone for the fake tan, too much make-up look as she's gotten older. She needs a bit more help in the make-up department these days but I don't think we can begrudge her that at 58. And having seen her up close on the Rebel Heart Tour, I definitely still would biggrin

Not all of her music is superficial. It's a mix of fun and deeper songs if you listen to her whole discography.

Plus, there was always a superficial side to pop music long before Madonna. Pop music by its nature of appealing to the broadest cross section of society has a superficial fun lighthearted side, in contrast to more technically based genres like jazz or classical.

Why is it superficial if a female artist like Madonna wears high fashion and is visually oriented? Wasn't fashion a big part of male artists like Prince and David Bowie. Sexism rears its ugly head again!

To me, there's a difference between talking about attractiveness and fashion/style. Physically attractiveness is based on genetics which you have little control over. Fashion is based on what you choose to wear and thus is a way to express your personality and individuality, and is part of a performer's art.

A lot of fashion looks are not meant to be attractive. Like for example the late Leigh Bowery. He was not physically attractive, but had great fashion and style.

I'm a big fan. I have her whole discography. Before early Madonna recordings we had 70's singers like Bette Midler, Linda Ronstadt, Olivia Newton-John, Diana Ross, Donna Summer singing much more mature songs that weren't about clothes, partying and being pretty. I'm aware she had much deeper songs starting with True Blue.

I find it odd that the people who rip Madonna the most always claim to be the biggest fans. Sorry, but there has always been a superficial side to pop music. Donna Summer for example was the ultimate disco queen. A lot of her lyrics were about dancing and enjoying yourself at the club. Or what about Olivia Newton John's biggest hit Physical. I wouldn't call the lyrics of that deep and profound.

And even Madonna's songs that are about dancing aren't as superficial as they may first seem. She has talked about the dancefloor as a way to escape the pain of everyday life and to find freedom. She found freedom in going to gay clubs growing up because a gay man was the first person who told her she was beautiful and could be somebody.

I don't recall too many Madonna songs that are about being pretty and clothes. Her fun songs tend to be about hitting the dance floor as a form of self expression, escape and freedom. Songs such as Holiday or Into the Groove.

I agree with PennyPurple. There is no softness to her. She has had much success but she doesn't have that IT factor, in my opinion. That thing that makes you drawn to her. To me she's very off-putting, which doesn't make her attractive to me.

and, all the plastic surgery (even though it seems to be pretty good plastic surgery considered) but there is not one wrinkle, every thing is too smooth, too "perfect" and it shows her vanity. At the end of Marilyn Monroe's life, on the beach with George Barris, those photos he took, you see her appendectomy scar, age spots on her hands, and she is still absolutely perfect.

Even tho I always liked Madonna I never thought she was beautiful or even that sexy...and except for the first couple of years before n after she was working out hardcore, she never seemed to have the greatest body type, more wiry muscle than curvaceous n feminine..I remember reading an oral bio of Sean Penn and I think it was his mom who simply summed up her looks by saying she wasnt even that pretty but cute n funny. To me she was slightly above average in looks but nothing more than that. I sawanted the sex book. She had literally no body fat on her
