I love the song "Right And Hype" (1989) by the girl group Abstrac. It was produced by Teddy Riley (the king of that whole New Jack Swing sound).

"No need to play me out,no need to shout
All I ask for is someone who can work it out
So,let's get together and let's have some fun
Hey,let's not push it cause baby you're the one"

I love that music. I think Teddy Reilly was influenced by Prince eg.the synths on 'My Pregorative'
Did anyone hear Tony Blackburn's radio show on Saturday night. It is brilliant - he plays this kind of music.

I don't think the "New Jack Swing" style holds up well over time. A lot of the cuts I liked back in the late 80's /early 90's just don't sound right to me when I hear them now. BBD, AL B Sure, etc, are just about painful to listen to now. The worst was when acts like Earth, Wind & Fire, The Bar Kays and Gap Band, tried going "New Jack". Guy along with a few other new jack acts still sound nice to me but over all I think that was a dark period for black music. It's really when the beat replaced the baseline in black music. Shit they were throwing back-beats on back-beats. I mean damn, how many beats do you need in one song? Hearing it now it just all sounds so plastic and hallo.

He had a second album "Who's The Mack" Actually liked it better than his first but for some reason it bombed badly. I remember him on BET saying "People ask me when is your next album coming out. I'm like it's out now man!"

interesting take because Arguably New Jack Swing got it's flavor from the Gap Band."My Progagtive" Bobby Brown echos the Gap Band's "Burn Rubber on Me".I like some New Jack Swing.Teddy Riley,Full Force,Al B Sure,Keith Sweat,Today,Chuckki Booker,BBD,etc.. it fused R&B,Pop&Hip-Hop which Puffy,Jermaine Dupri etc,,, got off Teddy.the interesting thing about New Jack Swing:is that aside from Teddy&Keith most New Jack Swing Artists got forgotten worse than Disco Artists IMHO.Jeff Redd had a Jam as well.but New Jack Swing when done well Sounds Good still but alot of it resembles alot of things out now which is mainly good for a Drive thru ride IMHO.Hit&Miss at best.

Agree on My Progagtive but I don't think of it as a New Jack record even though it's produced by TR.It doesn't have the same beat structure as most of the songs I consider "New Jack Swing" That Bobby Brown album was not really new jack at all outside of "Every Little Step" and maybe one or two others that slip my mind right now. And Face and LA's Don't Be Cruel is straight baseline driven old school.

The crowning glories of the era to me are Guy's debut and Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel" LP. Other good stuff can be found on R. Kelly's debut (Including the new jack classic She's Got That Vibe) and 12 Play as well as Michael Jackson's Dangerous in parts.

Almost forgot about Michael's new jack cuts. "Remember the Time" and "I Just Can't Let Her Get Away" are two of the best new jack songs of the time now that I think about it. But explain to me how you think "Don't Be Cruel" is new jack swing?

Right, that's why I said "era" rather than strictly adhering to a genre. There was just a distinct vibe during the years largely Teddy Riley's sound labelled "New Jack" was happening... Don't Be Cruel had this, although not every track would suit a purist.

I see where you're going and can respect that. Still I can't see anything New Jack about the song "Don't Be Cruel" other than maybe Bobby's image at the time. Remember, this was before Teddy blew up with the new jack swing sound so I doubt Face was influenced at all by it when writing/producing this cut. By the way what do you consider the first real "New Jack" song. Jonnie Kemp's "Just Got Paid" ?

see.. I ALMOST didn't post here, because I knew that I couldn't without commenting on Keith "fine whine" Sweat.. & his UNBELIEVABLY NERVE-WRACKING NASAL WHINY WAY OF SINGING..

UGH!

He made a "BRILLIANT" career of whining on almost every song..

at 1st, he was only trying to sound like Prince, just as Johnny "just got paid" Kemp & COUNTLESS, forgettable others did..

but then, somehow, someway, Keith got the idea that he could sell more records (& get more women) if he simply

WHINED

his way through a song..

& that's what he basically did.
I think it simply got to the point where a woman would say "OKAY Keith.. I'll go to bed with you..
JUST STOP YOUR DAMNED WHINING!"

The 2 songs at the top of the Keith Sweat "whine list" are "merry-go-round" & that 1 that begins "you may be young but you're ready".. the 1st 4 bars of that song is just
1
LONG
WHINE!

UGH!!!

It's WORSE than somebody SCRATCHING THEIR LONG FINGERNAILS ON A CHALKBOARD!!!

Lest anyone think I hate ALL of Keith's music..

"make it last forever" was the
1
song I thought Keith actually... SANG on!
When he actually SINGS a song, instead of just
INCESSANTLY WHINING THROUGH IT LIKE A 2 YEAR OLD
his voice is pretty good!

Okay.. THAT out of the way..

I have some "new jack hits" that I still dig, & am in the process of adding to my collection as cds..

I remember the group TODAY..
I really liked that 1 song (I think) they did, "why you gettin' funky on me"..
wasn't this on a Kid'N'Play soundtrack or something?

GUY is basically acknowledged as the "inventors" of new jack swing. I mainly liked "I wanna get with u" & "just a fantasy".. 2 REAL "pelvic thrusters! I think 1 of these 2 had the line "have the whole thing sewn up like a shirt", which I thought was clever..
Teddy Riley did some songs with the vocoder "talk box", which of course makes me think of the 1 & ONLY Roger Troutman..
ah- also "do me right" was cool, but this was more like "new jack lite"..

also in that same "pelvic thrust" sub-category of new jack swingers was WRECKS-IN-EFFECT with their jam called "new jack swing"

then, lastly, & even thought they might not be "officially" categorized as from the "new jack swing" genre..
I put them there anyway, because they were most popular at basically the same time:

Ricky BELL
Michael BIVens
Ronnie DEVOE
(now you know!)

I was impressed with them. I like how they sort of came out of "nowhere" & laid down some phat, new jack-like grooves & jams. I heard "poison" Friday night, & that brought back some memories... HOOO DOGGIES!
& that line
"the low pro ho should be cut like an afro"
too much!

I also got into the extended versions of "dope" & "(BBD) I thought it was me"

my favorite, though.. I'd say was
DO ME!
(surprise, surprise..)
especially the remix version (I forget what that specific 1 was called) that had the lines:

"smooth & slow, sexy tempo (hey!)
trying to find that body flow
I got protection
now I need affection
swing da booty in my direction!"

& every now & then.. every GREAT once in a while..
when I can work it in..
when it fits PERFECTLY..
I'll use

"mooove.. to the jacuzi.. OOH, that booty
SMACK IT UP, FLIP IT, RUB IT DOWN.. OH NOOO!"
smile

man oh man!
Back in the day- when I was CONSIDERABLY younger & quite a different person..
I really related to BBD's RAUNCHY, RAUCOUS, yet "playful" attitude..

I (also) really liked "word to the mother", the sort of "New Edition reunion" song, with Johnny Gill's piano playing & vocals at the beginning.. & I like that part where they put in song titles of everyone's hit songs to that point:

"it's POISON, DON'T BE CRUEL, it's MY PRERROGATIVE to DO WHAT I GOTTA DO, have a little SENSITIVITY (hey!).. DO ME baby, I wanna get RUBBED THE RIGHT WAY, so what you gotta say..? oh no she's a CANDY GIRL.."

yeah, back in the day, BBD was alright..

I know I'm missing other new jack swingers,
but I've covered the ones who made an impression on me.

It's good dance music, it doesn't sound too "dated"..
& again, this thread nearly inspires me to go out & get all the "new jack" stuff that I want (but don't have) on cd yet..
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

GREAT POST! I agreed with you up until you got to BBD but that's cool lol. You hit it right on the head with Keith. Make it Last Forever was the shit has was "Don't Stop You LOve" but it was downhill after that first album. I also did like some of Ready For The World's new jack cuts. My Girlie and the less popular "Cat Thang" both bumped. Yea it is good party music but I disagree about it sounding dated. Most of it does. When I hear it I think of bright colored clothes (just think heavy D) Gumbie cuts and Livin Color on Sunday nights. Actually those weren't bad days now that I think of it.

imho..new jack swing was a sound that reflected the times..when it was out i thought it was very commercial and i wished that brothers would pick up some instruments..well after re-visiting new jack swing, i noticed the instrumentation (there were solos...where can you find that in today's 100% programmed bs)..also..i think that new jack swing or teddy rile's sound peaked with mj's dangerous..those tracks were slamming!!!

Keith Sweat's debut album was DA BOMB!! I remember playing it like crazy in 1988.The opening jam "Something Just Ain't Right" is my favorite, followed by the slow jams "How Deep Is Your Love" and his excellent remake of "In The Rain".The funny thing is,my LEAST favorite song is the first single "I Want Her",which is just mediocre, imo.
