Honestly, now when I think about it.... Rihanna has improved a great deal and I really enjoyed Anti! She also has a lot of gems in her catalog and she has improved tremendously as a performer and singer. I change my mind, I will give the edge to Rihanna in terms of talent. She is more than just a pretty face and I really admire her down to earth personality and she is very charming and charistmatic. |

There is no comparison. Rihanna sounds like a robot. There is/was only one Vanity. No female performer today comes even close. Rihanna lacks the warmth that Vanity had. |

Vanity was not a singer whatsoever but Vanity has some spark of fire...but NOTHING like Rihanna's today. Rihanna has had a 10 year longevity of hits under her belt and now iconic videos that younger up and coming female artists can look up to. Vanity don't have nothing like that. I think we are still seeing Rihanna grow. She's no Pink or Beyonce but she got something. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I was just talking with a guy friend of mine who's obsessed with white girls and he said Rihanna looks better than Vanity. Can someone explain that for me? LoL
Personally I think women like Vanity are drop dead gorgeous but for some reason all the Millenials I talk to don't like her. Is it something about her? |

I like Rihanna's looks too but I find Vanity more stunning esp. since she's one of the few women (out of 2) who I actually feel jelly of, lol. Btw Mjcarousl is right about Rihanna being more iconic I think its great all of the most iconic singers tend to be African American or black |

Right? That shit was stone cold bad as hell. She broke some barriers with female singers and women in mainstream overall IMO. Was getting tired of the "sex kitten while stimulateously good girl" crap they were trying to push during the 80s and 90s anyway lol
Yup either be bad and own up to it or let it go. She been like this since the 2nd album and never let up. I'd say since she really broke through with Umbrella. So basically what yall are saying is that she's the Black Madonna circa 1990's? |

Something else I like about RiRi is that she appears to be Happy within her own skin and as a Single-Chick...She dates when she wanna date and she goes Solo when she wants to be alone...She's not marrying every Guy that proposes marriage...When she was chilling with Leonardo DiCaprio I figured they were just having fun while it lasted, then they moved on...RiRi looks like she's enjoying Life & Success... |

Not really. Rihanna is more iconic than Vanity now.
Vanity was the original; Rhianna is doing what Vanity already did plus Vanity did movies too. All the girls now including Madonna back in the day are just doing various versions of what Vanity back in the day. The granted Rhianna is a present day icon but Vanity will go down at The Original Icon.

Both not that great? Sure. At least Vanity didn't sing through her nose and sound like a goat/sheep. They were products, Vanity by Prince, Rihanna by a team of dozens. Point me in the direction of a beautiful Rihanna vocal somewhere. I want to be flawed and say i was wrong but it will never happen. FACT! |

Vanity had her limitations but what she did have was REAL STAR POWER. She had REAL CHARISMA. Prince may have given her a certain image but he did not manufacture her natural charisma and warmth of character - this she had before she met him. Even though she couldn't really sing well by the standards of black music at the time (although punk standards IMO would be a different matter,) that CHARISMA radiated through most of what she did and it drew people to her like a fucking magnet. Her beauty was a component to her overall appeal but there was MUCH MORE going on with her than that. Through no fault of their own, this current generation of fans and "artists" is so far chronologically removed from real American culture that they don't even KNOW what charisma IS nor do they have the ability to recognize its presence, absence, or importance. You are comparing someone (Vanity) who got down during the latter stages of the greatest period of culture perhaps known to man with real deal bonafide cultural heavyweights as her peers to someone (Rihanna) who is getting over during what can only accurately be described as the American Cultural Fall of Rome with totally shameless, absolute frauds and bamboozlers like Robin Thicke, Kanye West, Bruno Mars and Beyonce Knowles as her peers.
The bottom line? Perhaps you can "prove" by the criteria of your choosing that Rihanna is a "better" singer/artist/whatever than Vanity, but as far as I am concerned Vanity has "it" and Rihanna does not have "it." It's really just that simple.
Tragically, I don't think many of those who've posted to this thread so far even know what "it" is.

Some people may be but it's just that comparing Rihanna to Vanity isn't fair to Rihanna. When it's Vanity VS Rihanna in a battle of sex appeal, talent and looks then there is no reason why people should be voting Vanity over Rihanna in the talent department when Rihanna can sing and dance better than Vanity did. Both have/ had major sex appeal (I give it to Vanity here) and looks are subjective ao think what you will. Objectively speaking, Rihanna runs circles around Vanity and Vanity's affiliation with Prince doesn't make her more than what she was. I'm not a big Rihanna fan but to say she is less talented than someone whose primary asset was her beauty is laughable. |

The only reason people are bringing it up is because they are head over heels about their looks, period.

It was incredible year.....Prince dominated the award season by sweeping the AMAs and winning an Oscar, I watched Back To The Future for the first time along with all those Brat Pack films (St Elmo's Fire, The Breakfast Club) and Vanity in The Last Dragon, Madonna married Sean Penn under an avalanche of media coverage becoming "The Poison Penns" and Neighbours was hitting our tv screens on Seven Network for the first time.
