Is Rihanna the modern Vanity?? I heard some1 make that comparision on another site.. think about it.. both are greatly esteemed for their looks and have stunning features and versatile fashion sense.. and an undeniable "IT" factor and sexual appeal that radiates off of them... Rihanna drives the guys crazy just like Vanity did back in the day... Rihanna is the kiddies new "Vanity"... Agree or No?

I mean in terms of sex appeal, talent, and looks

Rihanna is definitely more musically talented than Vanity was. In terms of sex appeal, I give the edge to Vanity but I'm more familiar with Rihanna and in terms of looks, I think has it over Vanity. Vanity was gorgeous and while I love my women with curves (which she had and Rihanna lacks somewhat), Rihanna has a better face which definitely helps at least in this case. Outside of those latter 2 qualities, the two aren't really comparable.

I think what sets Rihanna apart from the other pop girls is that she is funny, intelligent, charismatic and has interesting personality.
Even if she wasn't beautiful, she could still command a crowd because she is intelligent, she is not a air head which I greatly respect. In terms of comparing her to Vanity. I think Rihanna stands on her own merits and I think Rihanna is more open and transparent than Vanity. I think they both have the same level of talent and both have a charm to them that is alluring.

I would say yes. A pretty front for the producers. Rihanna has more attitude though she gives the impression as if she's empowered.

Nope. Rihanna actually has talent. Exhibit A: Anti.

no cause Vanity had like barely one year of a relevant music career. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

No, there is only one Rihanna and there is only one Vanity, you can't compare them generation wise.....it was a diffrent time, opportunities when Vanity came up in the late 70s etc. [Edited 11/23/16 19:18pm] Keep Calm & Listen To Prince

Nah. Apples and oranges. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

No freaking way! And u guy's might be shocked to hear I think Vanity had way more talent than Rihanna. She was more interesting and unique. Rihanna sounds like every other artist out there today. Who did Vanity sound like?

Both are talented in their own way (I think Vanity was a better actress than singer). Rihanna is lucky to be on the scene today where there are more opportunities etc compared to 40 years ago. [Edited 11/23/16 20:39pm] Keep Calm & Listen To Prince

Vanity was extremely beautiful but let's be honest....she couldn't sing Most of the female Prince protégés weren't known for their singing voices, lol Rihanna isn't an *amazing* singer, but she can sing

I really don't think it's a fair comparison. Both have something to offer for their generations.

Honestly I started this thread curious to what you guys would say. (Not directed at you) And it seems like most of you guys don't remember watching Vanity's live performances or interviews to make an apporpiate comparision to begin with/ Their connection to the crowd is different, first Vanity DID come off as an air-head but her vibe was very magnetic, ethereal, and primal all at once. Rihanna is more egotistical, stronger, and empowered.
They're similar in ways because of their beauty, fashion, and music but Vanity had a projection about her that seemed delicately feminine and mischevious as well. Rihanna is more feisty and "bad bitch" image. Both are unique but Rihanna is probably closer in the vein of Aaliyah. My generation has yet to see a Vanity and I don't think they could appreciate a Vanity in a purer sense.

Vanity was pretty, and had charisma. Rihanna is a very talented artist and singer as well. My Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tundrah

When I was a kid I thought Vanity was the hottest popstar. Now that I am very grown up I think Rihanna is the hottest popstar. So I guess I kinda agree with your statement as far as sexiness. Rihanna is the better singer though and had a far more succesful music career. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Her singing has definitely improved but damn her lyrics are so vulgar. Then again, Pretty Mess?

Vanity was hot too and oozed sex appeal but the girl could not sing. Her gimmick was vulgar back in the 1980s; it's just that now it's much more explicit and has long since become commonplace whereas what Prince was doing with Vanity back in 1982 was somewhat new on a mainstream level. Granted back then, Vanity's material was more suggestively vulgar than overtly vulgar like Rihanna can be now.

This could be Rihanna and anyone, and my answer will still be this: Rihanna is absolutely rancid. Her voice is horrible, her music is canned and boring, or tries too hard, and her image is a hot mess of a train wreck. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Rihanna may be a lot of things but she is far from egotistical. She is very down to earth and humble. I see why people like her.

And she was great in Home (2015) I give 4 out of 5 Rihanna - Dancing In The Dark (Audio & Home Trailer)

I mean that's the image, you have to admit her image has a bragaddico kind of arrogance about it but still down to earth at the same time
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I still disagree. There are other pop stars who fit that egotistical image criteria. However, The only thing I will say is that she has a overly sexualize image but to be fair all the pop girls do besides Adele

Bitch Betta Have my Money, Needed Me, Rude Boy doesn't have some arrogant sort of self-grandeur about it? She's like a male artist in some way that's why she has one of the biggest heterosexual male fans out of all the main pop girls right now
"I was good on my own, that's the way it was, that's the way it was
She used to be known for going after people on social media and being unapologetic about it. her fans love her for her bluntness , honesty, down-to-earthedness but also cool and natural "yeah i know i'm bad, yeah i know i'm stylish and all that" but just because she doesn't shove it on your face doesn't mean it's not there
It's like the natural cockiness and swagger that makes her cool and that always comes with some form of cockiness and self-assurance. So yeah... I don't see how it's not "egotistical".. unless U have a negative connotation of the meaning or I just used my words wrong [Edited 11/25/16 3:01am]

Right? That shit was stone cold bad as hell. She broke some barriers with female singers and women in mainstream overall IMO. Was getting tired of the "sex kitten while stimulateously good girl" crap they were trying to push during the 80s and 90s anyway lol
