Prince Wanted to Work With the Weeknd

"He added that he and Prince were scheduled to work together in the late musician's Paisley Park studio, but those plans changed when the "Purple Rain" icon died in April."

Link

Just a small blurb but hmmm would've been interesting to hear. What do you think?

Prince seemed cool handing the AMA to Abel, so this makes sense.

Plus why you guys think Prince wasn't into male artists? He sure embraced female talents like Janelle, Alicia, Lianna La Havas... but he certainly dug what Frank, Miguel, Gotye, Kanye, Bruno, Weeknd and others been doing. Especially that in his later years he was more of a mentor rather than the usual devil-may-cry funkster he was. (God I miss him confused)

The Weeknd is very hit or miss for me. He has a great voice and great live vocals. He has his own sound: dark and moody. I would like to see some versatility from him though. But, if true, I think Prince would have pulled the best out of him.

Take Janelle Monae for instance: my two favorite songs by her are on her last album - Givin Em What They Love (with Prince, of course) and Dorothy Dandridge Eyes, which reminds me of I Can't Help It, a pairing of Stevie and MJ. No surprise. Both songs are unique to her, but have influence.

No point, just not ready to give up on Weeknd yet. 😁

I don't know if I believe this...but I do know during Prince later years he had an interesting taste in music and artists. lol I could see him maybe mentoring the Weeknd but who knows. Its hard to tell if this is the truth or not since Prince is no longer here to defend his thoughts. This kinda reminds me of when JT insisted MJ persuaded him to go solo after he passed rolleyes I have a hard time believing that being Mike didn't even like him.

That would've been cool. Why is it hard for some of you all to believe? Why would Abel just make that up? P. liked many different artists and I also read he wanted to also mentor Chris Brown too. It was so awesome to see P. at the AMA's last year presenting to the Weekend, and P. strutting out on stage like the cool badass that he was and the Weekend telling the audience, "Ya'll give it up for Prince". Nice to see the respect between them. cool

Prince on the Tavis Smiley show stated(I think) he was not a fan of male vocalist. Yet still after his death it was reported, Anthony Hamilton,Cee-lol Green and Maxwell were at the Park all at once. And also D'angelo at some point has been there as well. So I guess it is possible

eek Apparently that was taken out of context. Did he mean current artists? He has cited many male vocalists as influences: Stevie Wonder, James Brown, David Bowie, Sly Stone etc. At times, Prince had his way of being shady, coy and sarcastic and at times his words could get misinterpreted, so if that is what he really said, then that would be the case.

On his last album he said Generation X artists as a whole didn't impress him, so there's that.

I'd actually hoped he'd do some work with Hiatus Kaiyote. That would have been magic.

Prince once complemented Willow Smith so anything is possible. lol

Weeknd has an interesting voice so maybe Prince wanted to offer him some material more worthy of his sound?

Or he could have just been making polite small talk at the awards show? biggrin

Firstly when The Weeknd won the Billboard award this year, he said he didn't really know Prince, and actually he sounded extremely rude. Why would he say that if they supposedly had a collaboration in the works? Sounds like BS to me. People are just saying anything since he isn't here to refute it.

I happen to think that The Weeknd has a beautiful voice. My problem with him is that almost every song he does references drug use - just think it's a horrible message that he sends out and I find it hard to believe that P would want to collaborate as his image to the public was so anti-drug.
As for Chris Brown, I think P would have been a wonderful mentor for him and that would have been something I would have loved to have seen!

Considering P was into FKA Twigs, I could see him being into the Weeknd's sound in a similar fashion.

Never saw that, but he sampled and covered a lot of male musicians- Stevie, Smokey, James Brown, MJ, Curtis Mayfield, Sly Stone...

Working with Prince in recent years doesn't mean what it meant back in the 80s.

Yeah, obviously but so what? Prince was still a legend and it would look good for any current act to collab with someone of his caliber and status.

Should Rihanna and Kanye not have worked with Paul McCartney because it wasn't as big a deal as it would have been back in the 60s?

Wait - your smart alecky post is a contradiction. Is it obvious that working with Prince in recent years
doesn't mean what it meant back in the 80s, or is it a "good look for any current act to collab with
someone of his caliber and status"?

My contention is that it would be a good look for a recording artist to have recently recorded with
Prince to a few; but the Weeknd working with Prince in 2016 would not have been the same as Prince
collaborating with George Michael in 1987, for example, which is when it would have been a big ass
good look!

Think about it: what recent acts who have been intimately associated with Prince recently have
benefitted ultimately and consistently from said relationship? It's a different ball game these days!

It's not contradictory at all.

I actually agreed with what you said but your basis for why a current act like Weeknd performing with a veteran act like Prince is superficial. The only reason such a collaboration wouldn't have been the same as it would have been in the 80s would have been because the 80s was the zenith of Prince's popularity and commercial success. So what if Prince was old and his heyday was 30 years prior? It still would have been Prince whose reputation would have spoken for itself.

Also when did I say that any acts today associated with Prince greatly and consistently benefited said acts? I simply stated that performing with Prince would have been a good opportunity for them to share the stage with such a prominent figure who shares their line of work.

Based on your logic, it sounds like you're saying that acts past their commercial peaks have no business performing alongside the present day acts. Needless to say, that "reason" is nonsensical if that's what you're really implying.
