I'm seeing GC & Pfunk in London at a festival on Saturday afternoon. They have an hour timeslot, so will be interesting to see what songs they play to get the party started. Not even sure if they'll hit 10 tracks but if I can remember what they do I'll post here after! [Edited 7/14/16 15:41pm]

I'm missing them in Ireland in a few weeks, just can't make it. Kicking myself over it but what can you do.

They're on in Liverpool in a few weeks, can't decide whether to go or not. I'm guessing it's not the original P-Funk line up? Don't want to be disappointed after worshiping the Mothership DVD after all these years!

.

I'd say go! But yes not the original line up by any means, still a good fun show if you can make it and tickets are available.

.

The show at Lovebox Festival was short and sweet. As a big fan I only recognized a few of the tracks namely

.

One Nation

Flashlight

Give up the Funk

Atomic Dog

Get Off Your Ass and Jam

.

so maybe the rest was new and protege stuff- still funky though. Sure they would play more at a full headline show in Liverpool rather than one of many afternoon acts at a festival.

.

Anyway think those 5 above really have to go in the PFunk top 10 if they are the ones being prioritised on the setlist!

.

Some monsters I don't think anyone called out are pumpin it up (12 inch version remix), rumpofsteelskin and undisco kidd. Then there's more bounce to the ounce that could be considered a p-funk effort.

If you've got funk, you've got style.

"Pumpin' It Up" almost made my list (I wanted one jam from the 80s) but I chose "Atomic Dog" instead smile

I'm talking about the funk workouts, so I've purposely omitted some of the more rock-orientated Funkadelic material such as Cosmic Slop and Maggot Brain. Here's my top 10 P-funk jams: 1. Flashlight 2. Bop Gun (Endangered Species) 3. PFunk 4. Cool Joe 5. Sir Nose D'void of Funk 6. One Nation Under A Groove 7. Quickie 8. Paradigm 9. Funkentelechy 10. Handcuffs

This was a fantastic list to get the conversation flowing. I could live with this selection as my desert island 10 if I had to. Kudos especially for including Cool Joe, that is a overlooked gem for sure.

If you've got funk, you've got style.

These are some of my favourites that fall under the general P-Funk umbrella (you can find them all on YouTube):

1. Funkadelic (Junie Morrison) – (Not Just) Knee Deep

2. Quazar – Funk With A Capital “G” (The whole album is superb, but this tune is something else.)

3. Parliament – Flashlight

4. Funkadelic – Hit It And Quit It

5. George Clinton – Atomic Dog

6. Parliament – Aqua Boogie

7. Bernie Worrell (R.I.P heart ) - Insurance Man For The Funk

8. Mutiny – Funk 'n' Bop

9. Parlet – No Rump to Bump

10. Brides Of Funkenstein - Amorous

* an honourable mention: "Agony of Defeet" (Parliament) and "Loopzilla" (George)...

Hi mate – yes, I definitely consider “More Bounce To The Ounce” part of the P-Funk catalog. Great track.

It’s difficult isn’t it? The body of work is so vast. I actually prefer “Hydraulic Pump” from that album (co-written by Sly Stone if I remember correctly). That chugging synth bassline... biggrin

Yes, they were mind blowing live. I was born in 78 so I missed them the first time around (saw George in Brixton in 98’ though). I have the “Earth Tour” album on vinyl, and some of the bootlegged shows from the 70s are unbelievable.

I did a thread about getting into these cats for the first time 6 months ago. I only bought Parliament Gold, but shit do I want more. Where the hell have these dudes been all my life? God listening to Handcuffs and Bop Gun on headphones, I mean wow!.

.

I need to get a best of Funkadelic next, I know I am at the hits collections level only and toe deep in the funk rather than knee deep, but this is one funky voyage of discovery. I can see why Prince loved these dudes, because I do too now and kind of where some of Prince's crazier lyrics came from. Like GC said, Free yo mind and yo as will follow, well my ass has been following and now my mind is too.

.

Wow I have been funkadelified in the funk.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Both Rump and Undisco made my list at the top. The stuff Bernie is doing "underneath" on both those cuts is mind boggling. He's got the synth, organ and piano going nuts on Undisco Kidd.

I made my own mix of Pumpin It Up by looping that crazy middle section a few times and let it roll on. Where they get into this 3 part vocal acrobatics singing 'pump pump pump Pumpin it up.'

I love Rumposteelskin, its about butts and funkin along. It would be in my top 10 now - Livin and Jivin and lovin the skin he's in. Agree about More bounce to the ounce, that is Roger Troutman and Zapp though, but he must have been listening to Pfunk. 9 minutes of that jam is bliss.

.

Amazed it took me so long to dig it.I mean I listened to Prince and the Red Hot Chili Peppers along with Sly Stone all this time and only now I discover Pfunk. Only knew now that Prince had Zapp as support on his Controversy tour for some dates too. That would have been awesome.

.

Watched the Behind the Music: Zapp episode very interesting dudes, but troubled, they ran a roofing company too and Larry was insanely jealous of Roger.

More Bounce is Dr Funk's track. He took Funky Bounce and looped a piece of it. Gave to Roger and Bootsy and said make somn outta this. Says Roger hated the track. Irony is that became the Zapp sound and every hit thereafter bore similarity to it. One of the first funk loops. Clinton had been toying around with the phrase more bounce to the ounce, may have been a drug reference I do not know.

Thanks for that, I didn't know. I always thought they meant he was singing about a fat woman or a lady with a big ass "You're such a sexy mama - baby".

As I have always understood More Ounce To The Bounce is about tits. It makes sense, the bigger they are the more they bounce.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

All I know is prior to Zapp cutting the track George had been playing around with the phrase in the studio. Whether it originated with him or he coined it I do not know. The following year he brought it back out on his own "Loopzilla".
Muggs thought he was biting Roger but it was actually his to begin with. Troutman had been hanging around in the PF camp as early as '78-79 and appeared onstage with Parliament at MSG during the Motor Booty tour.
