Has anyone else heard rumours that Prince recorded the song Bad all by himself? I understand it to mean that Prince played all instruments etc. Would be fun to hear that version I'm sure.

Aawww.. Would no doubt have been worth listening to if it had been true. I've heard a few of Weird Al's things way back when. They were okay IIRC, but I don't think I've heard Fat.

i really doubt it, prince was pretty arrogant in those days and looked at michael as a rival who really wasn't a rival.

I posted the entire rumour on the Prince forum as I see it as being about Prince, not MJ, but it got locked and redirected here. The short version: It was allegedly a recording he made to tease MJ. Send it to him along with his No to do Bad with MJ. So it would go very well with an arrogant Prince. I can totally see him doing that, but it doesn't mean he did of course. It's just a tabloid story, so I don't put much faith in it without anything else to back it up.

i could see that. what was his quote about bad? "it was called bad because they couldn't fit terrible on the cover". underneath it he respected the guy, but, I've heard they'd met a few times. Prince is actually one of the few people who wouldn't lose their fucking minds meeting MJ that I can think of. James Brown got nervous meeting Michael, Eddie Murphy and arsenio hall were stumbling over each other in his presence. Michael knew he was in a stratosphere all his own too. When Mike Tyson approached him MJ said "I think I know you from somewhere". tyson said he "shat on me".

He knew MJ since he was 8  Nik West had played with Prince was on Instagram and said Prince had nothing but nice things to say about MJ and that they got along MJ also used to send Prince VHS tapes of Sly and The Family Stone and James Brown (MJ would call collectors and companies for footage of James, Sly, and others) and tried to get Prince to do a duet again for HIStory "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

you wouldn't think so would you? but according to james' own man James was nervous, and Michael was too. It's in the book the one.

I love Prince.....but he did look at Michael as a rival during their time. Michael tried to collab with him numerous of times but he declined.

Even though I was a huge fan of Michael's for some years, I had never paid close attention to his work with his brothers. After 7 years I'm back to being a fan and I decided to look into that part of his legacy and I must say I'm baffled: It's GREAT music. I prefer that part of his career to what he did post-Bad. I've discovered more about Michael's legacy in the 2 months I'm back to being a fan than in the 3 years I was a nut for him. I guess I was too worried with defending him and "uncovering" his family and so on. Now it's just the (great) music. I compiled the Jackson 5's/Jacksons' best songs:
1.ABC 2. Blame it on the boogie 3. Can you feel it 4. Daddy's home 5. Dancing machine 6. Destiny 7. Doctor my eyes 8. Don't know why I love you 9. Enjoy yourself 10. Even though you're gone 11. Forever came today 12. Get it together 13. Give it up 14. Goin' places 15. Got to be there 16. Heartbreak hotel 17. I want you back 18. I'll be there 19. I wanna be where you are 20. I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus 21. Keep on dancing 22. Little Bitty pretty one 23. Lovely one 24. Looking through the window 25. Mama's pearl 26. Maybe tomorrow 27. Music's taking over 28. Never can say goodbye 29. Rockin' Robin 30. Shake your body 31. Show you the way to go 32. The love you save 33. Torture 34. Wait 35. Walk right now 36. Who's loving you
Am I missing something? Any song you guys want to add? Do yourselves a favor and put this songs on a CD and shake your butt to it. Michael's work as a part of the Jackson 5/Jacksons is a must not just for a MJ fan but for any modern music muso.

joe frazier and muhammad ali had a strange relationship too, love, hate, complimentary and insulting all at once. It's just the earmark of guys who are perfectly pitted to be rivals. Personally, I'd have loved to see some of the Batman stuff with both of them, Prince as the Joker, Michael as batman. People were saying it was a Prince control thing way back then, probably true. That event along with the bodyguards started the very public backlash against Prince, and then there was the crazy enquirer story. Prince finally had to come out of his shell and give interviews. He did try to change his image during parade but the pop world pretty much moved on by then.

anyone else see the quickly-locked thread in MP about how Prince cancelled rehearsals and locked himself in his bedroom for days after hearing of MJ's death? [Edited 6/27/16 18:32pm] Maybe do, just not like did before

Yuuuuuuuuuup https://www.youtube.com/w...YWmokUBoth MJ and Prince are gone, and anyone especially people like Tavis Smiley can say anything they like. However, I do agree that MJ had massive amount of pressure from both AEG and Joe for a Jackson Family Reunion Tour. [Edited 6/27/16 19:59pm] [Edited 6/27/16 19:59pm] Keep Calm & Listen To Prince

The mods are petty, that thread did not have to be locked but they hate Michael so much. I thought it was a nice and touching thread. Why can't we just accept that they both respected each other instead of trying to fume this fake rivary? [Edited 6/27/16 21:42pm]
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well there are receipts that show they respected each other and were fans and there are also receipts that they were also some friendly competition with each other. I went over to the other thread that you were referring too and I honestly believe that they respected each other and there was no real rivalry but just maybe friendly competition. I liked how they did not publicly kiss each other ass like a lot of the pop stars do today.

I really regret that MJ & Prince didn't work together in some way. Maybe not a duet but MJ recording a Prince penned song. I know Prince offered songs to MJ which he turned down. I wish Prince would have invited MJ to Paisley Park & the two of them would go thru songs in Prince's vault until they found a song that MJ would record. Unfortunately that's just a fantasy.

Sure is a nice fantasy though. Does anyone know the Prince tunes MJ turned down?

Has anyone heard about this new recording of MJ from the Daily Mirror saying he didn't like Prince?
Excerpt: The Mirror can reveal for the first time the contents of the tapes, recorded for his autobiography Moonwalker in 1988. The full extracts on Prince have never been printed before. - He said: “I don’t like to be compared to Prince at all...." "He feels like I'm his opponent. I hope he changes because boy, he's gonna get hurt. He's the type that might commit suicide or something." Jackson added that Prince was "one of the rudest people [he] ever met" and said that the Purple Rain singer had been "very mean and nasty" to the Jackson family - Jackson mocked a 1983 on-stage collaboration in which he and Prince backed James Brown. During the performance, Prince mistook a fake stage lamp post for a real one and fell into the crowd. "He made a fool of himself. He was a joke," Jackson said. "People were running and screaming. I was so embarrassed. It was all on video." The video MJ is referring to: https://youtu.be/lHaFj7gOWh4 - In another incident, a heated game of ping-pong between the two artists ended with Jackson walking out of the room and Prince gloating, "Did you see that? He played like Helen Keller." (Hellen Keller was deaf and blind.) - The Prince versus Jackson saga continued when Jackson sought to collaborate with Prince on his song Bad. Prince not only rejected the offer, he mockingly re-recorded the song and sent it back to Jackson. - He claimed Prince was “starstruck” when the pair first met but changed after he found fame.

Now, I think all this should be taken with a grain of salt because it is from the Daily Mirror... but what do y'all think? They didn't release the recording but instead probably took bits and pieces of it to make a story, but I think it's probably a real recording.

The same tabloid that helped spread the "MJ had child pornography" BS that even prosecutor Ron Zonen denied? The same tabloid that ecoes everything the Nationak Enquirer comes up with? Actually, that Prince thing came from the Mirror who has a history of lies like when, the day after the FBI files were released and pretty much exonorated MJ, stated he had child pornography.
They cçlaim to have the tapes...well release them then! Come on! [Edited 6/28/16 12:18pm]

Another interview in which Smiley talks Prince and MJ. I didn't watch it all, don't know in which minute he starts speaking about them. What does he say? https://youtu.be/OG7vHppuOpo

I heard bits of it because I was doing some housework, but what stood out for me, first of all he didn't correct the interviewer when he said Katherine sold the catalogue, that is incorrect the estate did. Also around 29.03 mark Tavis talks briefley about his 20 friendship with Prince, but admitted that he only met MJ briefly twice, then 27.08 they talk about Prince regretting licensing LRC when they talked about Prince's vault of songs when they briefly talked about the MJ estate....maybe I missed the rivalry talk, but I didn't come across it. Finally Smiley said this book isn't about sympathy for MJ but for empathy......to put yourself in his shoes to get a better understanding of what he went through the last 16 weeks of his life. I remember when a reporter asked Prince to comment on MJ's passing and he said it was too "close." Meaning "too close to home," I suppose... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

[Edited 6/28/16 19:24pm] [Edited 6/28/16 19:51pm] There is a portion in the interview where Sway asked about Prince and Michael. Travis recalls Prince's reaction when Michael died. He said Prince was in the middle of rehearsal when someone gave him the news that Michael had died. He said that Prince stopped the rehearsal and went into his bedroom and didn't want to talk to anyone for days. Travis also states that right after Michael's death, Prince invited him to Switzerland for a jazz festival and that after the festival he and Prince sat on the hotel balcony from 2:00 am and all Prince talked about was Michael and his genius and how much Michael had done in the industry. Listen to this interview, it is really eye opening.
