Rank Chaka Khan solo albums, best to worst.

I'm curious to see your picks. So far I only own The Woman I Am, What Cha Gonna Do For Me, Funk This and Come 2 My House, so for now, I'm going to opt out as I don't know enough of her catalogue to comment. I do remember hearing "CK" once and only really digging "Sticky Wicked", which to me, sounds like a Lovesexy track.

I am planning on getting all her solo stuff, as well as extending into her 70s albums beyond my well-worn copy of The Very Best of Rufus featuring Chaka Khan.

So help a brotha out.... where should I go next?

Here's my ranking of the solo albums. I don't have "Echoes Of An Era".

1) What Cha Gonna Do For Me
2) Chaka
3) Naughty
4) The Woman I Am
5) Chaka Khan
6) Destiny
7) Funk This
8) I Feel For You
9) CK
10) Classikhan
11) Come 2 My House

I also don't have "Life Is A Dance" as the remixes sound horribly dated. You should get the "Epiphany" greatest hits though as it contains several very good unreleased tracks which were actually part of a scrapped full WB album.

You don't like Come 2 My House? I love that album. I'll Never B Another Fool is an incredible track, her vocals are spine-tingling.

Surpised to see Woman I Am so highly on most peoples list. Of the five I've heard, WIA sounds to me to be the weakest by far. That early 90s production has dated badly and the songs themselves are mostly lacklustre.

Speaking of "The Woman I Am", remember the Cherrelle album of the same name, that came out around the same time? Pretty good album. Narada Michael Walden on the production duties.

AND "Never Miss The Water" from Epiphany had some good remixes.

1.I Feel For You, its my fav Chaka Khan album of all-time, I play it at least once a week, my fav songs Caught in the Act, Eye To Eye, the titled track and Hold Her. Chaka Khan should be in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame and in every Prince tribute (hint Grammys, BET!) and is a national treasure worship

2. What Cha Gonna Do For Me

3. Naughty

4. Destiny

5. Chaka Khan

6. Echoes Of An Era

7. Chaka

8. Woman I Am

9. Come 2 My House

10. C.K.

11. Classikhan

12. Funk This

Surprised to see Funk This so low on peoples lists. Songs like Angel, Back In The Day, Superlife, Hail To The Wrong, One For All Time and Foolish Fool are brilliant.

I only own Come 2 My House (because of the Prince connection). I always thought it was a pretty good record though.

I prefer ranking the records with Rufus. Those are classics.

If you've got funk, you've got style.

Thanks for this thread, I've had I Feel For You for ages, but it I keep ignoring it for some reason. I got What Cha Gonna Do.... (2016 edition) and Come 2 My House the other week. I'm so blown away by What Cha Gonna Do.... I haven't had time to digest the other one.

.

.

Going by these few rankings, I should try Naughty, Destiny, Chaka, and Woman I Am next. And certainly not leave out the Rufus era.

Lets just go somewhere (we can funk)

Bought Chaka Khan self-titled the other day. Great little record, very funky. Slow Dancin' and Pass It On (A Sure Thing) are funky as all hell! And the Bebop Medley is awesome.

Agree completely, and maybe my fave solo record of hers. Nobody can sang the funk like her, just too bad IMO she does not do it ever more. Would have been awesome also to hear her do an entire album of hard rock. She could totally pull it off, kind of like a superior version of Mother's Finest.

I remember when this album was released. The song "Slow Dancin" (with Rick James) was getting tremendous airplay on R&B stations, but it wasn't released as a single. For some reason,Rick's label,Motown Records, was against this track becoming a single. So instead, the remake of Michael Jackson's "Got To Be There" was chosen as the first single.I find this album to be okay, but not nearly as strong as her previous album,What Cha Gonna Do For Me,which is excellent all the way through.

Half of "Destiny" is rock. Her R&B fans didnt like it and Warner didnt bother to promote it at pop/rock radio. My guess was maybe they had an agreement with Capital not to give Tina any competition. Chaka said she was working on a Rock album a few years ago but it turned out to be yet another promise she couldnt deliver on. I've been saying for a while now she should take a leave from Pop and R&B and record some Rock albums. Kind of like what Betty Lavette has been doing for some years now.
