ART OF NOISE drum machine?

Close to the Edit, Beat Box. Anybody know what kinda drum machine that was? WAS IT a drum machine? (hard to believe they'd have used live drums on a song called BEAT BOX).

Alesis came out sometime around 87 - I grabbed the HR16 up the minute it hit the street! I still have it.

I originally thought the beat box was a Linn drum, but I don't think so, and yes, it is indeed the MONSTER drum sound.

It's not a machine. I remember reading an interview with Trevor Horn, saying that it was slowed-down samples of real drums.

The majority od sounds are actually samples using the Fairlight CMI mk 1.

It was used for a lot of tracks throughout the eighties by ppl such as Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Scritti Politti, The Pet Shop Boys, Soul II Soul.

Considered to be the first ever sampling keyboard 8-bit with a computer screen and a light pen.

The alternative to this is the synclavier which was heavily used by Stevie Wonder particularly through the "In Square Circle" sessions.

Isn't that the instrument that Frank Zappa invented and recorded quite a few albums with?
