Plain and simple there is a double standard with our OUTRAGE. Elton saying this about Janet or Madonna or his comments on the drunk George Michael years ago, pissed us off because we like those people. But if Elton said Rihanna or Britney or Chris Brown we'd have no problem at all.

Elton has a right to say it and people can call him what they want, fact is fact though. Also did anyone have an issue in 2003 on one David Bowie's last appearances where he said straight out that there is nothing but CRAP on america radio because of the lack of talent and playing and being to be LIVE?? nope never heard anyone have the balls to call David out for it. So whatever, grain of salt, but truth is truth.

No,let's not defend Elton no no no! He has spent many years bitching, attacking and criticizing many artists. That's not cool.No one is forcing him to go see any of these artists. He has turned into an angry, old, bitter, whiny drama queen.

Elton doesn't hold his tongue....and he's mainly right. I recall about 12 years ago HBO aired a janet Jackson concert and it struck me as odd that almost the entire show- besides a ballad- was lip-synched. I couldn't believe that people were OK wit that. if I just wanted to watch someone dance, i would buy a ticket to Alvin Ailey (And BTW- Bowie was absolutely right as well !)

The difference is its actually elton with the double standard. He has actually shared a stage with Rihanna and several newer artists. As we've already seen he's collaborated with George Michael and Janet Jackson herself. Elion is the biggest musical leech.
Then he has the audacity to slam all those artists to the press for their lack of talent after he's worked with them? Why collaborate with all the artists whose talent you don't even value? Publicity. Elton John loves it.

Elton is right to a degree.

While I like Janet, I really don't get why she is considered an icon and all that.
If a singer can't perform a live show, then what real singing talent do they have?? A singer should be able to sing anywhere, anytime. Janet can follow choreography, but a real singer, she is not.

Again it's selective outrage, we don't like it when it is someone we like but have no issue when it is not. For the record Elton is someone that listens and hears everyone's stuff, and he is light years ahead of others on music and new artists so compared to say Prince, Elton has way more of an open mind, Elton talks about Artists, new ones, and praises them long before we do, this guy buys every new release, any one who saw his documentary knows he does that every week. If Elton said this about Rihanna it would not even be a thread or Britney or Beiber, but again selective outrage.

Who says that she can't?? A "real" singer stands around, paces from left to right, if at all and doesn't dance for 2 hours. So this argument is a bit unfair.

Well ELTON said it years ago when Madonna got the "BEST LIVE ACT" award in england I believe or something like that. He said that how could they give her a LIVE award, call it Best Concert or Performance etc....

Well, that's the same argument as people are having with the Rock N Roll hall of fame. People shouldn't take these terms so literally. Performing in concert is still being a live act, despite not every vocal being live.

Elton is a classless act. It's one thing to be opinionated about lip synching but completely another the way he names people specifically and insist on undermining the talent of other artists. No one asked his opinion of Janet Jackson he just decides to use her as the punching bag for the moment because his constant jabs at Madonna generated negative publicity.
Him and his husband both said they wanted to be more positive in their lives after having their kids but obviously even fatherhood hasn't delivered Elton from living a miserable life.

but why did you go to her concert? Everyone knows that Britney lip-syncs throughout her entire show biggrin It's no big secret, lol

I was 14, a big Britney fan and at the time it never occurred to me that she would not actually be singing.

I don't think that Brtiney Spears has ever sung "live" before biggrin Her lip syncing is so bad and so obvious. In this clip below, she is lip-syncing to another singer's (Sia) vocals!

SELECTIVE OUTRAGE. plain and simple, we can bitch and moan, everyone on this forum blasts everyone for not singing live, we can dig up a thread with every single person jumping in, in this case its someone we like. Did we call PRINCE tasteless for comments on Lil Mo, saying she was nothing and irrelevant. Was David Bowie a bad boy for saying everything on America Radio was crap in 2003? No I heard crickets when that was said. Elton commented on George Michael years ago and people got all hot and bothered because Elton was trying to get this guy on a better path, but everyone felt it was wrong and he should butt out of it. Well it seems George is going right back to his old ways again, and no one is saying a word now. SELECTIVE OUTRAGE also was seen after the grammies this year when GaGa covered and mimmicked Bowie and got a comment from his son, people all got in a hissy fit, well sorry but his son can say what he wants, because if you look at the tribute in London, it was class and here it was classless.

Exactly some of it was lip synched but some of it was live as well. he doesnt have to dance nor does he have any choreography or high energy dance moves so he can have a seat at his piano

I like Janet and Britney, but I can not envision myself purchasing tickets to see either of them lip sync. That would be equivalent to striking a match and burning money.

Years ago he put all of Billy Joels personal problems out there in Rolling Stone magazine. Right after they did a tour together! and Billy never said shit about Elton before any of that. 100% agree with Elton John.

.

I think some of you are in such a rush to label him a bitter old man (which may be true) that you're completely missing his point. He's not criticizing Janet Jackson, per se, and he's certainly not saying she's talentless, a poor artist, or anything of the sort. He is criticizing media outlets for calling her live-show great, when, in Elton's view, it's not live. This is a different point.

.

I completely agree. I mean, if you bought tickets to the New York Philharmonic and you sit, watching the cellist pretend to play while there's a backing-track playing over the speakers, did you get your money's worth? No, you didn't. Why should a 'pop' show be any different?

.

Some of you might have a different viewpoint and simply want to see a famous person in the flesh, and watch a dance and light show. I don't.

.

Elton comes from the 1950s/60s school of musicianship, which was based on... musicianship. I'm pretty sure Prince would agree with Elton on this, for what it's worth.
