I'm very familiar with Joe's career. There are a lot of character actors that aren't "household names"........but people still know their work. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

Joe is and always has been a character actor. They tend to go "unknown" on some levels. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

A lot of the stuff in the Johnnie Taylor episode I knew already, except the part about being a pimp. I didn't know about refusing to do the Wattstax concert because Isaac Hayes was the closing the show either. According to commentary on the Wattstax DVD, Johnnie was filmed at a club because the main concert was too long or smething like that. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Thanks for posting because I was ready to start a new thread where we anticipate and comment on the weekly Unsungs.
Just checked out Johnnie Taylor last night and there was a whole lot that I didn't know about him and his life- for example, I grew up in Dallas and remember the TAG Enterprises building but never knew what it was, much less that it was associated with Johnnie Taylor. Anyway, thanks to the dope and informative Unsung episode, I now understand his importance and legacy as it all makes sense.

Jimmie Walker released his autobiography in 2012 and mentions he used to MC concerts. On one package tour in the 1970s with Johnnie, Stevie Wonder, Tavares, Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, & others. Jimmie said Johnnie almost got kicked off the tour because he was drunk a lot and missed shows, turned up late, or performed longer than he was supposed to. Jimmie said when JT went pass his time, he would go onstage to dance him off, so the next act could start. . Johnnie is usually said to have 2 pop hits, but he several singles hit the Top 40. He was more popular on R&B radio though. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
