They may not be Unsung to us but they didn't achieve the popularity of EWF, Kool & The Gang, or their fellow Dayton, Ohio natives Ohio Players. Don't laugh at my funk

Joe Tex...
As everyone know that damn title of the show "Unsung" should mean just that. Slave wasn't unsung... I'll go even further, the more and more I read and research how they count record sales... I think you can take for a grain of salt who sold what and how much.
Joe Tex had a record hit here and there... I ddn't say album, I said record. Evenn so, the guy recorded consistently and produced some damn... down right brilliant music. Yes, I do believe Tex when he said Brown stole some of his moves...

Slave is still not on that Earth Wind Fire, Cameo, Kool & The Gang level of recognition. They could do an Unsung. But ain't that funny there are artists being passed over for a show called Unsung... for the same acts that walked all over them in the first place.

People still talking about who is really "unsung" or not? 95% of the acts featured on this show already are not unsung (O'Jays, Sammy Davis Jr., Al B. Sure!, Too $hort, KC & The Sunshine Band, The Spinners, etc.) in that they are lesser known. The disco genre is not unsung either and they had a 2 hour episode for disco, zydeco would be a better choice for that. Disco was well documented already. Most of the acts had some popularity, a few had pop success. I assume they pick acts that has some name recognition for ratings, so they're not going to feature someone too obscure. Also, many of the older acts had little or no video footage, especially the pre-1980s ones, so I guess they are not a first choice either. They do need something to fill the 40 minutes. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

It ain't people its me... but this is a little running joke between me and other orgers. Before you time Mickey, I was bitching about this show and the acts that aren't Unsung dammit.
In fact, change the damn name of the show.

It's all the Joe Morton/Joe Tex talk too. It's good enough for me that this show features acts that otherwise had little media attention. How many people knew the history of an act like The Delfonics? But you can find all kinds of books, documentaries, & TV shows about The Beatles and Bruce Springsteen. There's even books about Pete Best & Stuart Sutcliffe and the girlfriends Elvis Presley had. There's a TV documentary about Stuart too. I've seen a big biography book about The Smiths. Soul and R&B itself is not as well documented as rock and maybe pop. There was no R&B equivalent of Rolling Stone, Downbeat, and Creem. There were teen mags like Right On! & Soul Teen, which were the black versions of Tiger Beat. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I think Slave is very Unsung, the fact that they only had three singles reach the Pop top 100 says that they are. And they're one of my favorite Funk acts. Besides their top 40 hit, "Slide" the other two were "Watching You" and "Snap Shot" which both were at the bottom of the top 100. And they only had four top 10 R&B Hits. Hell, Steve Arrington had a better career than Slave (chart wise.) [Edited 2/2/16 18:52pm] PRINCE: Always and Forever

Doesn't Unsung really mean one hit wonders or artist who are very known to the black music fans who didn't enjoy massive crossover success like a Michael Jackson Prince,Janet Jackson,Whitney,Madonna. Most of the artist I consider to be Unsung. Imo acts like Slave, Cameo ad yes Stephanie Mills I think are unsung. Still holding out on my list of wanted Unsungs Five Star, Lisa Stansfield, Starpoint,Swtch,Pointer Sisters, Cameo,Jones Girls, Vanit6 6, The Time, Mtume, Bobby Caldwell.

Think about it. If you put Slave in their prime on a show with the Barkays, Midnight Star. Who do you think would have been the opening act? Mind you the other 2 acts had an Unsung episode as well. Saying Slave is not Unsung is like saying the Dazz Band isn't Unsung and the Dazz Band had a massive top hit too with Let It Whip but very few other hits. I was playing Slave cd Stone Jam in my truck one day several years ago and my sister didn't know who they were but she was aware of Watching You but she knows who the Barkays, Midnight Star, and the Dazz Band are. Most black folk among our age group knows who Slave is but if you ask the demographic 10 to 20 years younger than we are Slave doesn't resonate like EWF, Kool & The Gang, or the Isleys. Don't laugh at my funk

I never paid attention to where funk/soul acts charted on the Pop 100 because it never mattered to me. If they had a hit on the R&B/Soul charts that was good enough for me and generally the artist too. I agree with you on Slave being Unsung but far from being unknown. We know that's not the case. TD3 rolls her eyes. I had the opportunity to see Slave at the Soul Music Festival in Charlotte last year. And yes the majority of people there loved Slave but the majority of the crowd was my age or older too. I can still get up and shake a little booty but some of those folks older than me can only shake for a few minutes before they have to sit back down. Don't laugh at my funk

Has Tracie Spencer ever had an Unsung episode? She was the Shit back in the late 80's...Beautiful young Lady with a nice voice...She should be more successful than Brandy..Tracie made you look twice @ her when she performed, Brandy makes you look once...( I bet Micky Dolenz aint NEVER heard of Tracie...LOL..)

I have a couple of her maxi singles, but never heard much of her later stuff. She was out around the same time as Debbie Gibson, Shanice Wilson, NKOTB, & Tiffany which I have records by all of them. With Tiffany I only have one 45. I wasn't really interested in her other songs enough to buy them. I wouldn't really be that interested in an Unsung about Tracie. One about The Jets would be nice though. I'd like to see C+C Music Factory too. Someone close to one of the band members (Slave) came on the org last year and (I think) stated there were some issues with the band and "Unsung". I can't remember if they were legal or musical but it would be great to see their episode.....I've heard the members of Cameo are down to having their "Unsung" episode told..but one member in particular doesn't want to do it.

The Donell Jones unsung was good. Donell hasn't aged at all. He looks the same as he did in his first music video until his most recent.

Another Classic. Like someone said on the unsung ep it could of been an MJ song. It has that vibe.

I wouldn't be surprised if Steve Arrington is caught in the middle of it. For the longest time he was out of secular music and had been doing ministry for years until a few years ago.
