It starts off amazingly. The re-do of Sue was a mistake. The original was PERFECT. It feels like it ends too soon though and unspectacularly. I still give it a thumbs up for the first 3 tracks which are brilliant.

Change it one more time..

You can always put the old one in place of the new... wink It's playing now and quite different from the original...

Didn't take long for "I can't give everything away" to really grow on me. Reminds me of "Seperator" form "King of Limbs" by Radiohead, also had to warm up to that.

My first Bowie album.

I picked it up on the strength of the first two singles, and I have to say I'm loving it.

His use of horns is intoxicating. They contribute so much to the general meloncholic mood of the record, with their sad chords. Yet their tone is so warm, the sadness almost sounds comforting. Especially, on a song like Lazarus.

And the poetry of the lyrics really makes me want to grab a lyric sheet and study them. What's he going on about?

I love feeling like an album has taken you on a journey. 'Tis a pity it was so short.

This is a little off topic, but I highly recommend listening to Scary Monsters, Diamond Dogs, and Station to Station. From beginning to end. Those are my three favorite Bowie albums.

"Low" has to be in there or I will punch a little kitten. And then ""Heroes"", too.

Hey loudmouth, shut the fuck up, right?

i tried a few times with the album and like everything i hear but i just cannot
get past "Lazarus". that songs is everything right now. it's the only thing i want

to listen to. no matter what else i put on, i just go 'no, Lazarus, again' lol

The part when he sings "By the time I got to New York..." eek I don't know, there seems to be so much yearning in his voice.

I loved the original Sue. But I love the new one even more. It's just so fucking intense.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Actually, everything from Hunky Dory to Scary Monsters (with the exception of Pin ups) is probably the only run of albums comparable in quality to Prince's work in the 80s. And if you really want to study Bowie lyrics, I highly recommend https://bowiesongs.wordpress.com It's an absolutely great resource for analysis of the man's work.

I would add two other runs of albums to that illustrious list: The Beatles (the whole time, but really from A Hard Days Night to the white album) and Stevie in the 70s.

I'm actually a huge fan of Bowie's first three albums, but they're definitely an acquired taste. His first album is so wonderfully theatrical. There's some crazy shit on there. The deluxe edition from 2010 or so is stellar. His second album (usually called Space Oddity) has some really fantastic lyrics. Again, the deluxe edition is the way to go. And then there's The Man Who Sold the World. It took me years and years to get into that album. What finally clicked for me was the lyrics. There's so much to decipher. All the Madmen. The Width of a Circle. Saviour Machine. After All. Good lord, I fucking love that album now.

Love the sax throughout the album.

First track is a spooky lush landscape.

If only Prince could get back to using sax/hornz like this.

Blackstar (album) + Lotusflow3r w/Crystal ball... scratches a fun itch!

Sparingly and complementary, like on SOTT...

For dissonance... mmm... Temptation, Crystal Ball? wink

Even those songs (which are great, don't get me wrong) use horns more traditionally than what's going on in Blackstar.

I think it's great how "'I'm dying to / push their backs against the grain / and fool them all again and again / I'm trying to" seems to turn into "I'm dying too / I'm trying too", disappearing in the synths...

When Bowie was 50 - he created "Bowie Bonds", financial securities he backed with royalties from his pre-1990 work. Bowie issued the bonds in 1997 and earned $55 million from the sale. The rights to his back catalog were returned to him when the bonds matured in 2007.

Doesn't Blackstar the song remind you of Prince's Crystal Ball in terms of structure and instrumentation? Both are great pieces of music.

Besides "Blackstar" I've been listening to "Low" and "Heroes" today. Just so, so, so great. Has anyone even made something that's just remotely like "Heroes"? The vocals on songs like "Joe The Lion", "Beauty and the Beast" or "Blackout" are completely insane.

Those albums are so great. That part on Blackout when he starts yelling about Japanese influence and his honor's at stake just kills me. Get me off the street!

Great album, just frustratingly short...

Neversin.

It's longer than Diamond Dogs, Lodger, Let's Dance, Station to Station, Low and Heroes, and almost identical length to Ziggy, Aladdin Sane, Hunky Dory, etc. I think it's the perfect length - tight, concise, a perfect listening experience. I think it could have become a bit overwhelming if too long. That's just me, though.
