Academy Award Winner, Eminem!!! Can you believe it? I think the Frida shoulda won... but, I was happy that Em won it, and not U2. Don't get me wrong, I love U2... but they were so smug about the nom, a little too cocky, like they expected to win, hands down. Eminem's win smacks of the Purple Rain trip... when Prince won... but at least Prince showed up... wtf? Where'd Eminem go? Your thoughts? |

According to the Detroit Free Press, Eminem was at home asleep during the awards while his daughter watched cartoons.

According to E! Entertainment Television, Eminem was given an ultimatum by the Academy. Earlier this year, he performed on the Grammy's, his version of the song with the bad words bleeped out. The Academy would have none of that. They told him, either perform the radio friendly version of "Lose Yourself", or don't perform on the show... we all know what choice he made. |

With all the talk of people calling him "the new Elvis" and the greatest rapper ever he's smart to lay low and chill. If he starts believing the hype that he's the greatest, the backlash and resentment from other rappers could start. And once that starts, it could spread.

Why is it always a black and white issue? I loved what 2pac did, and I love what Eminem does... they both had/have their separate styles. Eminem's writing skills and his timing is nothing like 2pac's... and vice/versa. Take their race out of the issue and you have two very good rappers who talk/talked about the conditions they grew up in , their beliefs in their hood, and their fights for the big struggles in life... they also both talk/talked about "bitches and ho's"... If Pac didn't get his ass shot up, maybe he'd a reached his higher level... the man was an excellent actor, and was recognized for both his acting skills and rapping style... I still cry when I hear "Keep Ya Head Up"... It's time to erase those color lines... |

I am glad he won. All the other songs were so boring. At least Lose yourself has a beat and interesting lyrics. I'm just glad they didn't give it to U2.

Plenty of black men have reaped awards and rewards too. I refuse to get involved in a "poor me" mentality on any issue. You are what you make yourself. I agree that it is harder for people of color to get from point A to point B than it is for whites, but you can't place that mentality on everything in your lives. I'm Latino, I've not had it the easiest either and I've moved forward, or tried to... but does every conversation involving music, sports or film have to do with who's done what first? I will not post on this subject regarding blacks and whites again on this post... I just wanted to bring up some musical conversation, not start a race war. k? |

Eminem Gives Oscar Thanks Tue Mar 25, 5:45 PM ET By Josh Grossberg Eminem an Oscar winner. How's that for street cred? According to reports, the controversial rapper was more surprised than anybody that his hard-charging rap hit, "Lose Yourself," off the soundtrack to his blockbuster film 8 Mile, scored an Academy Award for Best Original Song on Sunday night, besting the likes of baby-boomer faves U2 and Paul Simon. But that doesn't mean he wasn't ungrateful. "Eminem is always thankful when the work he puts into his music is recognized by others," said a spokesman from Interscope Records regarding the rapper's reaction to winning the golden guy with cowriters Jeff Bass and Luis Resto. The Detroit hip-hopster issued the statement after failing to show up to collect the prize. In fact, his was the one Best Song contender not performed during the ceremony. It was Resto who did the speechifying, taking the stage dressed in very un-celebrity-like attire (a red-and-blue Detroit Pistons jersey with a gray overcoat instead of traditional black-tie) to accept the first Oscar ever bestowed on a hip-hop artist. "He's creative, he has symphonies in his head that I'm privileged to put on tape," Resto told the audience about the rap superstar otherwise known as Marshall Mathers III. "It means a lot to him, believe me, this means a whole lot to him," Resto told reporters backstage later. "I just don't think he expected it. So, this is fantastic." According to Resto, Eminem was just too busy running his record label Shady Records to get away to attend Sunday's ceremonies. The official line from the Academy and his spokesman, however, had Mathers taking a break from the spotlight, opting to stay home with his infant daughter Hailie (and reportedly repair his relationship with his estranged ex-wife, Kim). It's been a good run for Eminem, whose rhymes these days are as popular with balding middle-aged movie executives as they are with kids in the hood. His latest blockbuster album, The Eminem Show, has sold over seven million copies since its release last summer and won a Grammy last month for Best Rap Album. "Lose Yourself," meanwhile, sat at the top of the Billboard charts for 12 weeks in a row, making it the biggest pop hit so far in the new millennium. And then, of course, there's his mega-hit movie debut, 8 Mile, which was inspired by the rapper's trailer-park upbringing. That flick not only launched Em's acting career, but it also made a bundle, grossing north of $116 million at the box office last year. The chart-topping soundtrack has also done multiplatinum business. And the 8 Mile DVD is looking to do even better. Fans last week plunked down a record $75 million for the Universal Home Videos Release, which hit stores last week and went the distance, marking the biggest DVD debut ever for an R-rated movie. The DVD features the usual behind-the-scenes documentary and lots of footage that was left on the cutting-room floor, including five rap battles, as well as spontaneous rhyming from the master himself. And as an added bonus, there's a music video for the song "Superman" that's being released only on the DVD. |

Why is it always a black and white issue? Black men invented the rap genre. Now they have to watch as a white man reaps the awards and rewards for being a rapper. It's not like the hip hop genre is dominated by anyone other than Blacks, and other Black rappers have received high profile awards throughout the years too. So that's a non-issue. I say this not to defend the 2pac/Eminem comparison, because I'm not a fan of either one. But when you bring up watching a White man reap awards and rewards in a genre invented by Blacks, a genre STILL dominated by Blacks who are awarded yearly, it seems to come across as an excuse. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

If a black man would write a good (rap-)tune for a movie and would have been nominated, he would stand just as much chance to win! Face it, 'Loose Yourself' is an exceptional good rap-tune that just happens to be in a (good) movie. Therefore it was awarded. Black rappers should be encouraged by Eminem's achievement, it proved that critics (in this case the Academy) are listening and willing to stick their heads out. Credit to who's credit due, this is the best thing that happened to rap in years!

Are you trying to tell me that "Loose Yourself" is the best rap song ever in a movie? Face it, the Academy Awards aren't cutting edge ever! The only picked "Loose Yourself" becuase it was such a bit hit (and meanwhile, that was radio that made it a hit, not single sales). The media is pushing Eminem when they used to bash all rap/hip-hop. He might be talented, but he sure gets a lot of extra help!

Coolio and Stevie Wonder should have gotten the first rap Oscar for Gangsta's Paradise in 1995. The American public is showing it's hypocracy and racism by pushing Eminem as a genius of the rap genre. It was cool when Eminem was doing his thang and was more or less equal with the brothas. But this is bullshit to elevate him above everybody and push him to the top of the mountain as King of Rap.

Where Eminem differs from his black colleagues (and maybe therefore stands out) is that he is talking about his own life and misery instead of the usual bling-bling, bitches & ho's, the money and the cars. Here's a man from Detroit (how glamorous is that) who's got issues and talks about it, his estranged wife, his daughter, and him being white in the 'black' rap-community. Listen to 'White America' and you'll know how he thinks about it. In the meantime Jay-Z is driving his Aston Martin Vanguish together with hot-chick Beyonce as if they are Bonnie & Clyde, such bullshit. It is too easy to say that Eminem gets his props just because he is white, you think that Dr. Dre would produce a white rapper that is not talented?
'Loose Yourself' is probably not the best rap-song ever in a film, but this specific song and it's content fits perfectly in the movie '8 Mile'. The song sums more or less the whole movie up. I think that is what the Academy recognized, and no, the Academy is not cutting edge...and they are not meant to be. It just happened to be this year's best song in a film! Cut the race-crap, it is too easy and Eminem will keep on proving you wrong! [This message was edited Thu Mar 27 0:32:04 PST 2003 by abierman]
