My Album of the Moment (3/26/03): Ramsey Lewis, "Sun Goddess" (1974)--CAUTION: long thread! i dunno if any of u here are familiar with ramsey lewis or not, but i'ma go 'head and give props anyhoo:
sun goddess is a bad-ass album...it has a jazz-funk sorta vibe 2 it. i got into it cuz i moonlight as somewhat of an apprentice/helper at this wrecka sto here in mpls. this album wuz in stock, and the owner put it on the turntable one day and...oh lawd, we were both blown away! a couple members of ew & f were involved with this album (philip bailey, verdine & maurice white)... here's the tracklisting (i have this on vinyl, btw...i don't think this is available on cd) and commentary on each track: side one: sun goddess: title track (doy )...if you've heard ew & f's gratitude album, then you'll know this. i prefer this version, tho'. living for the city: instrumental take on the stevie wonder track of the same name...dunno who did this first, tho'...help! love song: another instrumental...really nice. if barry white & the love unlimited orchestra were 2 have redone this, they woulda done it justice. still cool, either way. side two: jungle strut: 'nuff said. 2 funky. hot dawgit: da da dadit-daaa...this one's catchy as hell...also 2 funky. tambura: the intro of this track makes it seem almost p-funkish, in a way... gemini rising: quirky way 2 end the album. all n' all, on a scale of 1 ta 10, i give this mofo a big fat 11. go 2 your nearest dusty-ass wrecka sto and dig around a bit 4 this one, if u wish. if you've heard this album, testify if u wanna!!! hot dawgit edit. Loved "Sun Goddess" of course Because EWF are My All-Time Favorite Band&Maurice White started out under Ramsey Lewis.but the Album on a Whole has some Hit&Miss Spots for me.the title Track Rules&that Song alone makes the Album a 4&half for me.the rest I can take or leave. mistermaxxx

I have so many memories of listening to this song on AM radio back in the 70's. Plus my father used to play this 8-track in the house all the time in 74-75'. Great thread Handsclapsfingasnapz.

That album cover is one of my favorite childhood memories. It was so cool. I also prefer this version of Sun Goddess.

Funny you mention Ramsey because I've been bumpin Jungle Strut the last few weeks. That song is just too funky. Sun Goddess is cool too but I dig EWF's live version a little more. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance
