Any Bar-Kays fans out there?

Today I heard their "To Hot to Stop" track; it reminded so much of EW&F's "Shining Star." Or, maybe I should say that "Shining Star" reminded me of it. Guess what I want to know is whether the elements were influenced by the BK's? Or, maybe it's the other way around?

"Holy Ghost" is one of the heaviest sounding produced Funk song I've ever heard. Dayyyuuummm.

Big Fan of them even though they are More of a Cover Band in that they take elements from every Hit that is out at the time&put there take on it.they were pulling a Puffy before it had a Name."Holy Ghost" is the Jam.ConFunk Shun Cats are playing on that Cut uncredited. my Two Cuts by them are "Move your Boogie Body","Are You Being Real".now on stage they are Monsters.in fact I remember back in 89 reading how much Axel Rose Enjoyed there Vibe on Stage.Larry Dodson can get down on stage.Larry was like the Black David Lee Roth to Me on stage in that He would do Flips&just get all into it on stage.no matter who you were you didn't want to follow the Bar Kays on Stage.

Those songs are still played a lot here on the "Solid Gold Soul" stations.

Before there was Sisqo there was Mr. Larry Dodson the brother who sings upfront with them.

I think James Alexander is doing more of the "behind the scenes" thing in Memphis.

I think he is prez of their chapter of NARAS.

That might explain the comparison between "Shining Star" and "Too Hot To Stop."

You know what? The Bar-Kays' "Freak Show on the Dance Floor" sounds a lot like Midnight Star's "No Parking on the Dance Floor."

I just ordered the BK's greatest hits. Maybe I'll notice some more similarities. (Or again, maybe these artists were influenced by them.)

Exactly. In fact, many of the Bar-Kay's songs in the 80s sounded suspiciously like other artist's songs.Their 1984 hit "Dirty Dancer" features the same synth line from Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean".Another 1984 song "Dance,Party,Etc" sounds ALOT like Prince's "DMSR".I'm sure this was just their way of paying tribute to those artists and songs?

"Dance, Party..." D.P.../DMSR... I get your point. I hope that track is on the greatest hits comp I ordered.

You know, that's why I don't get my thongs in a bunch when artists sample. smile

Boogie Body Land is always forgotten - THAT song was the jam - it's always left out of BK greatest hits packages (uhh, well, the ONE that I've found). I dl'd it and it held up okay, but yeah, I gotta say HOLY GHOST is the bizznomb.

I agree with Brother Maxxx sentiments about The Barkays on stage...They DIDN'T PLAY!!!

But I really revived this thread to say that one of my favorite R&B jams is their song "Feels Like I'm Falling In Love" from the 1981 NightCrusin album. Man that track is classic!!! And it wasn't even released as a single.

I don't have a hardcopy of the recording. I taped it from one of my uncles who had the album. Tight cut!!!

That horn riff was no joke on that track!!!

"OOO WEEE

OOO WEEE

Feels like I'm falling in looove

whhoooaaa babyyy" lol

I love to hear Larry Dodson funkdafied vocals!!!!

Yeah...I'm digging out a lot of oldie threads because a lot of them was done while I was out.

Another track I love by these soul brothers from Memphis, TN is "Spellbound".

Ya'll know ya'll wrong for that Larry Dodson/Sisqo comparsion. lol

Ubiquity

I dig the original Bar-Keys the most (the brothers which died in the tragic plane crash with Otis Redding back in 1967). Cuts like "Soulfinger" are plain hard driven FUNK!

However, I also dig some of the 70s material of the follow-up Bar-Keys such as "Do you see what I see".

Anybody dig the "Mar-Keys", the original white studio band of Stax records?? They were all white cats but groovy as hell! Duck Dunn (later Booker T and the MGs) played with them as well as the son of Stax-Boss Estelle Axton.
