over the years i dissrespected eric clapton.
i always thought that he was a lousy guitar player.aFTER CREAM,WHEN HE WAS WITH CREAM HE WAS GREAT.
but over the last period of time i have listen SOME OG HIS WORK.
SONG BAD LOVE HAVE very nice guyitar solo.
but what realy floored me is eric clapton doing jimi hendrix song"stone free"/
on stone free eric kick ass ,great great guitar playing.
i changed my mind a lot.
i think that when he wants he can be badd,badd player.
what do u fellow orgers think of eric clapton's guitar playing?

clapton was never the spectacular player that hendrix, beck, or page was i.e. his nickname, "slowhand". he tended to play blues with a melodic sense. i have always enjoyed his playing, but he's not the type to blow you away.

I think he's about as overrated as a guitarist ever was.

but in 35 years he's written some very good songs

I've never considered Clapton to be in the same school as many of the 60s and 70s' rock guitar greats. But I think he is a decent blues guitarist.

I don't listen to much of him anymore. Has he ever revisited the heavy, fuzz sound of Cream since he's gone solo? Or has all of his stuff been fairly subdued?

clapton tends to play a more lyrical (subdued if you will)rather than flashy style.

the clapton vs his 60's peers is somewhat like miles vs dizzy debate. dizzy played fast, flashy, and had a more pyrotechnic style. miles' best work is not fast note runs, it is the lyrical, melodic nature of his playing. he always used to talk about the space between the notes as being more important. that's where clapton excells.

that being said, i only use the comparison to miles for sake of analogy, not to elevate clapton to the level of miles, which i don't believe he belongs.

and while i like a lot of clapton's work, i don't subscibe to the "clapton is god" thing from the sixties.

Clapton is a master guitar player. No mistake about it. Granted, I'm partial to Page and Harrison, but Clapton has some great songs that are fun and challanging to play. Overall, he is great live, and while his best work may be behind him, many people say the same thing about Prince

Overrated. Yeah sure his technique is incredible blah blah but goddamit he is as boring as fuck. Has he actually made a truly classic album? Granted his stuff with Cream was excellent but solo zzz. He's an artist for music scholars to jerk off over. He's the Citizen Kane of the guitar world.

I think Clapton is up there with the greats.Even though I dont like all of his music.But what artists that have been around thirty plus years still blow people away with their most recent stuff.Not to many I can think of.Last year the BBC had some kind of vote for the best guitarists ever.Out of the top twenty,only four or five have done anything in a long time.And none of it was anything spectacular.

I've always had a lot of respect for EC but (IMO) his cover album "From the Craddle" was the best blues tribute I've heard. I saw the concert twice, just awesome.
