Album Review:

O.M.G.

Here are my notes...I signed an agreement that I won't share any confidential information which includes "descriptions of recordings" so I won't mention specific tracks here... BUT you can try to guess them.

First of all, she touches almost ALL GENRES possible on this album. It sounds very unique for a Janet album but mostly pop. There are less r&b tracks than I thought. Ballads are smooth, one song that goes "Who's gonna be there after it all? / I will" is purely a piano ballad. And a lovely one.

It's not sexy album, it's a happy album. One song is gloriously EDM "I had a great epiphany / Rhythm Nation was that dream". Another dance track (with one word title) [NIGHT is the only one word titled track] will sound tremendous when remixed. Pure dancefloor bliss.

Thematically it's closest to Rhythm Nation as a whole. There are songs that are classic soul. One song in the album declares: "I've seen a beautiful vision / What we can create"... it's like Heal the World gone smooth soul. The song after that sounds like a Jackson 5 song in the new millennium.

The heart of the album is probably the time when she whispers over a mysterious beat: "You never know, unless you've been there".

No Sleeep is definitely a highlight there too.

Fabulous stuff, very versatile. Artistically ambitious.

EDIT: It starts with Unbreakable and three upbeat tracks after that, as usual (I think she has had the same concept since Damita Jo)

Follow-up....

Unbreakable and No Sleeep are the most r&b tracks there are imo. Now to think of it, No Sleeep was an obvious choice for a single.

More....

How many single choices does she have for this? Is it possible to go 4-5 singles deep? She's going to tour this project for a while.

Maybe 4 proper singles, given that Unbreakable isn't one. The track posted here earlier, The Great Forever, is an obvious one. Not sure about BURNITUP but her hardcore fans will stan for it a bit I'd say.

But please do not share or quote this review, I'm basically not allowed to say anything at all before the release date (which still is 10/2, no digital release before that)

I just realised what describes this the best IMO: Imagine "Doesn't Really Matter" and make an album out of it.

Edit: I was thinking of "Doesn't Really Matter" mostly because of the happy vibes and various genres there are.

How would you compare it quality wise to the rest of her albums?

I'd say this is in her top 4/5, but hard to conclude after one listen.

One thing was so random... she said "Plush" in the middle of other song than No Sleeep.. I think that was already discussed here at some point. But that made me laugh a bit.. Only the queen...

It's funny that you say the Great Forever is an obvious single choice (even over BIU). When Janet posted that clip of TGF, fans didn't seem to feel it. I personally think the clip posted doesn't represent the song well. So I for one and very interested in hearing TGF in full.

BIU is just a bit too "So Excited" for me, TGF is smoothier and still catchy

Dammn Baby screamed "sex" to me just looking at the track list. But now I assume it's just a standard love song?

Yea, it's not as sexy as it could be. She still sounds sexy on several songs, however there's no "Moist" on the album. And no matter what her religion is and whom she's married to, it's the right thing to do this time.

this is a interesting find... The album has been available since the end of August, but I don't know if the people who have it are even interested in Janet enough to strip the WAV files of the watermarks, convert them down, then leak it. I could be wrong, but meh.

the email i received said 9/30. i still wanted to hear 'the great forever', that snippet was catchy as hell, the fans pushed for 'burn it up'. the tracks he described are the ones she performs on tour, the piano ballad = 'after the fall', the emd sounding song = 'shoulda known better', of course 'no sleeep and unbreakable', we heard 'the great forever' snip, and jimmy mentioned the song 'night' and talked about janet dancing around the room.

They always do, because Japanese CDs cost MORE in Japan than CD imports from elsewhere. They have to be enticed to pay more.

Argggh! Now I'm going to have to buy another copy because the Target version has two bonus songs.

That does not matter. Yen is different than dollars. If the local CDs still cost more, there isn't a difference. Making the dates the same does not change the cost of the CDs.

The US dollar is not worth as much as the yen. That's what makes the CDs imported to Japan cheaper than the local, in the same way Japanese CDs imported to the US often cost double of local US CDs. It's the exchange rate. Many US albums are out of print here, but are in print in Japan.
