El DeBarge/Heart, Mind & Soul Marvin Gaye has served as the coked-out patron saint for countless soul men who rightfully hear in his voice and music something sonically special and painfully honest. In his nearly forty-five year lifetime, Gaye rose from wannabe lounge lizard worshipping at the altar of Frank Sinatra to become one of the most distinctive vocalists of his generation. Coming out of the Motown music factory in the sixties, Gaye not only made hit singles (“Hitchhike,” “If This World Was Mine”), but also forced the label to think beyond their 7-inch singles mentality when he crafted the brilliant concept album What’s Going On in 1971. A hard-hitting aural statement that was sung in the softest voice,What’s Going On was as powerful as Martin Luther King marching through Selma, as strong as a Malcolm Xspeech, and as rousing as a Molotov cocktail thrown from a moving car during yet another civil unrest.

Good read. I just think its amazing how well his voice has held up despite the years of drug abuse. Some can use drugs for years and it has (seemingly) no affects on their singing voice. Then you have others that end up sounding like dying frogs or something like that. Maybe it depends on the type of abuse. Maybe its genetics... idk - But his single, "You Know What I Like" had me sold from the jump. He sounds angelic, soulful and Marvinlike as ever and Chante Moore had me mesmerized. "Stop the press, who's that?" - - Was this before her single "Love Is Taken Over" or no? I think this dropped the same year her single was released. [Edited 8/10/15 8:27am]

hey script. i'd thought this thread would bring you back to the org. to say something.
Bobby, Bonnie, Chico, El, The Debarge's get an I for incomplete... what might have been. They aren't the first to cock up a music career sadly, they won't be the last.

Ms Trina, you know me well. I agree with all you have said. I think that El does not have the charisma to be a stand alone solo/artist superstar. certainly not back at that time. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I read a blog some years the author list the name of artist/singers who's career didn't fare well after they left their respective band / groups. I still looking for that blog.
