Straight Outta Compton Film/Music Thread

I know I've done a few threads on this before, but since its opening nationwide next week, I wanna do a thread devoted to N.W.A and the film, "Straight Outta Compton". Come post pics, vids, stories about the film and N.W.A (even include the individual stuff they've done on their own.

Is the movie gonna mention Dre's days in the World Class Wreckin Cru...when he dressed more like Prince than a gangster? I doubt it, but I'm still pumped to see it.

Make it so, Number One...

They should have been first ballot Rock Hall inductees this year.

Better make it next year.

Seeing all the things going on in the black communities and the police pigs it would have been a no-brainer and true "Rock and Roll" mentality (or "rebelious" which what "Rock and Roll" used to stand for instead of corporate whitewashed stupidity) to induct N.W.A. for the revolution they helped bring in the black ghetto experience and culture...

Beastie Boys began as a punk group and had rock guitar infused hits. I can see why they made it in.

Because they have guitars in their music? NWA had a bigger impact in Hip-Hop that BBs.

yeah IN HIP HOP. but it is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame so you better have some transcendant rock appeal because that's who chooses who gets in.

shrug Even Ice Cube's earlier group C.I.A. was influenced by Beastie Boys.

Beasties are alright but folks exaggerate their influence. Its a insult they made it in the hall before much more groundbreaking black hip hop and rock bands. I side eye when Green Day made it in too.

I feel the reason why Ren and Yella never had the big careers like Dre and Cube is because E, Heller and Ruthless didn't give hardly any promotion to blow up that big.

hmmm

I honestly can't think of a single song that I actually like from NWA even though I dig a lot of the solo material from Dre, Cube & Easy.

Robert Christgau wasn't feelin em:

"Straight Outta Compton [Priority, 1988]
"It's not about a salary/It's all about reality" they chant as they talk shit about how bad they are. Right, it's not about salary--it's about royalties, about brandishing scarewords like "street" and "crazy" and "fuck" and "reality" until suckers black and white cough up the cash. "Fuck tha Police" is a fantasy, "Fuck with me I'll put my foot in your ass" an exaggeration, "Life ain't nothin' but bitches and money" a home truth, and I bet Ice Cube gets more pussy now than when he copped the line. Somehow DJs Dr. Dre and Yella, who's also got the brainiest rap on the Charles Wright rip that busts out of their ghetto, drive the three M.C.'s past their own lies half the time. It would be poetic justice if both of them departed for greener pastures. B"

I agree that they are a bit overrated. Fuck Tha Police is decent, but no Cop Killer. Sure, the cops gunned at em, but they do that to innocent blacks.

He predicted Dre would leave. Yella, not so much. lol Hope Dre can buy fitty a sammich.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

The Mighty Oprah is Tweeting about the movie so hopefully some extra promotion will help it to do good @ the Box office...

I don't know what else is opening this weekend but it looks like the timing may be perfect considering how the new Fanstastic 4 movie bombed over this past weekend. Mission: Impossible 4 remained No. 1 but it's numbers weren't that great either. Less than $30 Mil I think. They've had hella promotions across various formats. It's poised to win.

-

My question is: Is it any good? F. Gary Gray (Dir. The Italian Job) will no doubt capture the spirit of the group and time well. My concern is the whole "Hollywood" factor. In other words: will the studio execs get in the way and whitewash the story. My bet is yes.

That's pretty weird considering how much she hates rap music, especially of this nature. I would expect her to not want to promote their stuff again.

Oprah blasting NWA at 1:51 (albeit twenty five years ago lol)
