i see they couldnt be bothered to spell Evelyn "Champagne" King correctly. Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

Oh, the joys of living in the US of A! This type of bundled oldies acts hardly ever comes to Europe. Enjoy mate, I am jealous! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

CoolMF said: Still waiting for the Machismo appreciation thread. Pretty solid album minus You a Make Me Work. I thought that was weak. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

Don't be because those "bundled oldies acts" are actually entirely way too under appreciated over here in the US of A. That's real talk! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I love going to these Old School R&B/funk shows that feature several different acts. It's always so much fun! People bring their kids to these shows and I think that's wonderful...to expose them to real music for a change! Youngsters need to hear this REAL FUNK.

Thanks for confirming it is indeed Vanity. Never realised it was her modeling for She's Strange too. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That might be true, but at least citizens of the USA are able to actually attend such shows and see some proper olschool funk in a live setting. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

. Living in the US of A? Hell No! And if, I would never go to some of these oldies shows (hell hell no!!). Smells like, "ok, we're not really in the business anymore but we can surely hook up and make some money out of our glory past, cant we?!" Ugh!!! Me, personally, I would prefer seeing/hearing them doing some new FUNK instead of playing the same old hits over and over again. I can only imagine how boring and, maybe, embarrassing for an artist this must be! And please dont get me wrong, I dont wanna talk them or any orger bad here. Funkaholic1972, your enthusiasm in oldschool music is truly appreciated, same goes for Soulalive, but come on?! Btw, SINGLE LIFE & FLIRT are true killer tracks, definitely my alltime faves from CAMEO, to get back on topic ..... .

To each their own, I can only say. I love oldschool funk and would jump on any opportunity to see my favorite acts from the 70's and 80's, no matter if they play their old hits or new funk material. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

You both have outstanding points, and I thought the same as CityPhantom when I saw that remark about that show. Not only do I have little interest in seeing oldies-style concerts but I am annoyed when they package non-funk acts with funk acts. Only ones I would want to see from this lineup are P-Funk, Cameo and Zapp (although not so much withour Roger) - I would be miserable suffering through the others. It reminds me of the late-1970s and early 80s with the blastphemy of funk being lumped into disco and disco being called funk, which was a travesty. But in any case, would much rather see these bands creating and performing NEW music with some hits sprinkled in. There is no the excuse that it costs too much for studio time, promotion, etc. as technology has enabled inexpensive recording options and the Internet has opened up distribution. It is such a shame that these great 1970s funk bands are relegated to that when rock acts from the same era seem much more free to produce and perform new material. Thank God for newer funk bands like The Motet, Dumpstaphunk, Lettuce, Galactic, Papa Grows Funk, Prince and even Bootsy with his last album and George Clinton with the new Funkadelic album that are truly keeping funk alive. OK, off my soapbox. I just love the music so much and want so much more from the talent that could be delivering it. If you've got funk, you've got style.

CAMEO is 1 of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE BANDS.
late 70s - early 80s the BROUGHT THE FUNK.
HARD.
as the 80s went on, they lost some of their edge & they were not the same after Wayne Cooper left the band..
but Cameo's brand of hard-driving, foot-stomping funk holds up well - even to this day - against ANY of the other funk legends.
here's my Cameo playlist :
keep it hot I just want to be cameosis SHAKE YOUR PANTS just be yourself flirt single life CANDY alligator woman we're going out tonight why have I lost you (the ORIGINAL verison, NOT the "let's-talk-about-lonliness-yada-yada-yada" version..)
man - just from reading this thread.. I'm going to CRANK UP some CAMEO RIGHT NOW.
I'll see you tonight..

wow - this ought to be a NICE show. if I were promoting/putting together this show KEITH SWEAT would NOT be on it. his WHINING & CRYING -NOT singing - would make me pull my ears off my head (HOW did he ever become popular??? eh.. a post for another time..)
what's going to be the order of appearance for these groups? it ought to be "Champaign" 1st FULL FORCE next CAMEO & ZAPP are almost interchangeable. if Zapp still featured ROGER then I'd slot Cameo 3rd then of course GEORGE CLINTON to close the show for all the obvious reasons. plus, he'd probably play at least 3 hours anyway..
I'll see you tonight..

Some of these older funk acts have done new music in the late 90's and early 2000 but either fans dont ever know when they release new material or don't support it but will whore themselves out to a newer act like Bruno Mars who does a tribute to funk and support it. That's what I don't get about Steve Harvey and Tom Joyner. They won't support older acts with new material(Tom may barely)but will jump all over newer acts like Bruce Mars, Miguel, and Robin Thicke. Keith Sweat's debut album is a CLASSIC,but I never got into much of his other material (except for "Nobody",his 1996 hit). You're right,he does alot of whining when he sings, lol.

Cameo is the truth...probably my favorite straight-up funk band. Would love to see them live one day, but it'll probably be a cold day in hell before they play somewhere in Germany

That album was released in 1984.By that time,Vanity was a solo artist signed to Motown Records.I doubt that she would 'model' for someone else's record cover at that time

Simply too many good times & great funk tracks to mention from this crew. They are tied in the #1 slot for me.

You know that saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words?" Well....
I was thinking about a time in my life when everything was bad(mid 1980's). The law was after me, i was pretty much homeless, and worst of all, i was estranged from this woman(my girlfriend at the time) that i was kinda sorta in love with. So, i was hiding out in San Francisco, and would spend my days hanging Downtown(in the Tenderloin), drowning my sorrows by smoking pot, drinking, and listening to Cameo's, She's Strange, and in particular, the song Hangin Downtown !
Its a trip. Pretty much everything about that song appears to describe how i felt. It described the loneliness, the uncertainty, the walking around "city streets", the missing my woman, etc. Now, i don't exactly know 100%, what the true meaning of the lyrics to Hangin Downtown are, but in my mind, that song described my situation to a "T". It was uncanny.
Anyway me being young(around 16 when SS came out), i probably did a little over dramatizing(about my circumstances). No doubt things were bad, but many, many, years later, most of that stuff is a somewhat distant memory. Still to this day though, i get in a weird space when i listen to Hangin Downtown. I get somewhat, emotional.
Anyway Cameo wrote some great slow songs. And for me, besides Prince, The Time, The Isley Brothers, Earth Wind & Fire, and the Bar-Kays, Cameo is my favorite group. Towards the end of their 9 or 10 year run of really good, really great, and excellent, albums, they got a little repetive in their sound. That don't really matter though, because that 'sound' was still pretty damn funky. It just was electronic, funk(y).
[Edited 4/27/15 19:26pm] Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

When I saw Ms. King pic, I knew you were going.
Saw them for the 1st time the fall/winter of 77. The song I wore out from the Cardiac Arrest album, Funk, Funk.
That song should have been their sig song in my humble opinion.

I absolutely love Cameo and have been a huge fan of theirs since the first album dropped when I was in high school. I saw this dual CD but i would say DON'T COP THIS ONE....GET THE UNIVERSAL RE-ISSUE THAT DROPS THIS MONTH. I tried getting the Japanese pressings from the early 00's and the Japanese sellers are asking for crazy dough.....$99, $149.00 etc. This Universal reissue is right on time and is also pressed in Japan. $15....perfect price. Here is the link! http://www.amazon.com/Fee...s_ep_dpi_5
