25th Anniversary of of En Vogue's #1 smash hit, "Hold On"

Article

Remember When En Vogue's "Hold On" Was #1 R&B Song In The Country?

Twenty-five years ago the 'Funky Divas' topped the Billboard charts with their 1990 debut single

The year is 1990. George H. W. Bush is the President of The United States. Gas is $1.24 per gallon. And En Vogue's "Hold On" is the number one R&B song in the country.

Produced by Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, the song begins with an a capella version of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles' 1960 "Who's Lovin' You", sang by Terry Ellis, alongside fellow group members Cindy Herron (who sings lead on the song), Maxine Jones, and Dawn Robinson.

Featured on their certified platinum debut album Born To Sing, the song hit number one on both the Billboard R&B and Dance charts, and number two on the Hot 100.

Remember the first time you heard that beat drop? [Insert: nostalgic sigh].

Fastforward 25 years: Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron are the only original members in the now trio, touring alongside Rhona Bennett. Dawn Robinson is still working on launching her solo career, while Maxine Jones---who has faced a series of financial problems---is entagled in a legal battle over the right to use the group's name for her own En Vogue off-shoot.

[insert: another sigh]

I liked when Dawn Robinson was part of Lucy Pearl later in the 90's with Raphael Saadiq:

Everybody's looking 4 the answers
How the story started and how it will end
What's the use in half a story, half a dream
U have 2 climb all of the steps in between......RIP Prince

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Time is a mutha. I almost shit a brick a few years ago when I found out
Cindy was 50. Now 53 eek She could easily pass for 38. I hope my wife is that damn fine at 53. By contrast Dawn,God bless her but seems to be aging faster than the rest of the ladies and she's the youngest.

Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

Good look with that. Last time I saw her she was falling apart on a reality show.

In other news Bernadette Cooper just released her solo album.
