why is damita jo mentioned when janet's subpar albums are discussed?

imo it was one of the best r&b albums released over the last 10 years. no way should that album be lumped in with 20yo (which was halfway decent), and the terrible discipline.

One word - Superbowl.

-

Overall, I'd say it's as good as All For You.

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

The SuperBowl incident really fucked things up for this album. I actually still listen to this album frequently. "My Baby", "Warmth"(don't judge me) and " slo love" are my favorite jams from this album. To me this was Janet's last great album. By the next two album I felt like Janet was no longer really interested in music. But as a life long fan. I'am someone who will always support her.

Outside of Control, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, and janet., I listen to Damita Jo the most!

Yes. I also do like it quite a lot. Damita jo, Strawberry bounce, Sexhibition, Island life, All night and Spending time with you being my favorites.

No clue really, it's a bit too long and has a couple of fillers like Warmth & Moist but otherwise a cool album and much better than the unlistenable All For You & Discipline!

It was very polarizing when it came out. Fans expected more since it was a Janet album. I find it inferior to All For You cause there's no great single worthy tracks like All For You, Come on Get Up, Trust a Try, Someone to Call My Lover, and Son of a Gun.

That's my analysis of Damita Jo. There were good songs but nothing on it
that was great like past singles. It was definitely inferior to All For You.
I liked every track on that album but Son Of A Gun. I felt You Ain't Right should
have been a single instead of Son Of A Gun.

That album contains a combination of some of her best and some of her worst yet. Some tracks drag on like they have no melody or were slapped together to sound like everything else out there, and others were beautiful, melodic and mellow. Her vocal output was not as strong but it worked with some songs.

It's criminal that her bet awards performance was not her superbowl performance, it's disappointing that she didn't use the show to her advantage to promote new material and had to team up with Justin who came off his album over a year ago. All nite don't stop, island life, spending time with you, sexhibition, strawberry bounce, like you don't love me, moist, thinkin bout my ex are the best tracks on the album

its actually my 3rd favorite janet album behind velvet rope and rhythm nation. true there was no super single like a ttwlg or if, but imo its overall a little bit better than the janet. album. while control is a classic album it sounds way too dated now, only songs i can listen to are funny how time flies, when i think of you, and pleasure principle. damita jo is a much better album than all 4 u in my opinion. i agree its kind of long and it could have done without moist and warmth, but songs like all nite, dont stop, sexibition, spending time with you, i want you, my baby, island life...i dont skip any songs on this album.

'enjoy' and 'take care' should have been on damita jo.

It has got cult status since it's release and people are reflecting how good the album was. It was included on a list of the greatest slept on albums by a UK news publication - I think it was 'The Times'

The album got good reviews outside the states, which makes me think people were was too biased after SB. The 'Rolling Stones' review was heartbreaking and unfair.

yes anything said about that album in the states had to be taken with a huge grain of salt. i think virgin made a mistake moving up the release date trying to capitalize from all the attention.i also think janet messed up big time by not going overseas and promoting heavy over there where they didnt give a shit about the super bowl. i dont know why janet neglected her international fanbase for so long.

Definitely the Super Bowl. Not only would it have probably been another #1 album for her, but the singles would have been top 10 for sure, especially All Nite. With radio and MTV bailing on her, the album really didn't have much of a chance, not that it did bad without their support, but it wasn't typical Janet numbers. The album has some great outtakes though, like "What Can I Say", "Could This Be Love", "Pops Up", "Love Me" (Just a Little While remix).

That's how I feel about it too. It has no real focus, and it feels long. I can listen to songs on it, but as an album it is all over the place. But I did buy the Japanese import with the bonus tracks.

I think had they let Jimmy, Terry and Janet put the album together the way they wanted to it might have worked better. I think after the Super Bowl Virgin records made her re-assemble the album. I'm not absolutely sure about that, but that's been the talk for years.

alot of fans claim virgin made them change the album but i really dont know if thats true. for instance if they were worried about it being offensive after the whole nipplegate thing i doubt they would have left moist/warmth on there. i do believe jalw didnt make the album but they threw it on there at the last minute to try and appeal to pop radio, it just didnt fit with the vibe of the album. terry lewis actually hasnt contributed much if anything to janet's albums since the janet. album.

It's true that Virgin forced changes. It was supposed to be even more sexual than it was. I recall Dallas Austin stating that it was going to be her, "Dirty Mind"...

-

"

The overriding theme of Austin’s collaborations with Janet is her bubbling sexuality. “To me, this is her Dirty Mind,” Austin explained, referring to the Prince album that established him as a hormonally charged pop star. “It’s a really sexy record, but not in a sensual way. It’s bold, it’s fun, it’s really positive. Nobody’s sad, nobody’s mad. It’s just really fun songs where she happens to be talking frankly about sex.”

-

Austin said the direction came from the energy she gave off from her when they first started working together. “She always shows what’s going on with her life through her records, reveals the phase she’s in with her life and brings out that experience,” he said."

Damita Jo is a better album than people give it credit for however its not one of her best imo. I agree with others here who said that the album lacked direction and theme. It did seem like it was all over the place. When the album first came out I listened to it quite a bit but now its not an album I listen to much. I think All For You is better, songs like China Love and When We OOO are the real underappreciated gems.

see i feel the opposite, i think all 4 u was kinda all over the place. damita jo doesnt have any stand out strong singles, i think thats the biggest difference from her other big albums, but as a body of work i love it. i can put it on and chill out and not skip songs, i cant do that with all 4 u. i just hate when people lump it in with 20yo and especially discipline, which imo is her only really bad album.

Why do people say the album does not have any standout tracks?

1. ISLAND LIFE - her best song of the noughties after AFY

2. ALL NITE

3. SEXHIBITION

4. LIKE YOU DON'T LOVE ME

5. STRAWBERRY BOUNCE

ETC...

all have hit written all over them!

Take out the cringy interludes and stupid album title - you would have a solid R&B album.

it didnt have a 'miss you much, ttwlg, together again, or all 4u', those were all big lead singles which were #1 hits. i dont hear any of those type of singles from damita jo.for me it just has a lot of good r&b tracks but not one really great cant miss smash.i think there are a couple songs that could have been top 10 hit singles if she had her usual promotion and airplay. this album changed the trajectory of janet's career.if it had ran its course she would have toured and then took her usual time off, there wouldnt have been a 20yo in 2006 which was a disaster or a discipline which was even worse.

Exactly. Take the SB incident out of the equation, and those songs, if released as singles, would have been massive. ALL NITE's lack of chart success is proof that Janet was blackballed because it's a great dance track.

I didn't think "All Night" was that good of a dance song. I thought "R&B Junkie" was better

I also think All for You was the last real Janet album imo. While it was also all over the place and not as good as Velvet Rope.. I can at least feel that songs like Truth, Better Days, Someone to Call My Lover, You Ain't Right etc were personal and were real things that Janet experienced. I don't feel the same way about Damita Jo despite the album being named after her middle name and I think thats why Damita Jo gets lumped with 20 YO and Discipline.

I love R&B JUNKIE too, but if you want a pure four-on-the-floor dance track, then it's ALL NITE. It didn't do much on the Hot 100 because of her blackballing, but it did go to #1 on the Dance charts.

Your right Damita Jo didn't have a theme. Janet was really good at having conceptual ablums. This one really didn't have one. It was like she put that record out because she had to. Not because she was ready to. And to me that is very important when your talking about an artist like Janet. She has to want to participate in order for that project to work and be a success.
