Billboard chart analysis and rank of Jackson Family singles

Janet Jackson Outsells MJ...on Singles

New York, NY (Top40 Charts)

Back before her 1986 breakthrough, "Control," then-teenage Janet Jackson was still mostly known as Michael's Little Sister. That changed when Janet released her iconic single "What Have You Done for Me Lately" in February of 1986, the song earned Jackson two Grammy nominations and a Soul Train Music Award for Video of the Year, since then Janet Jackson and has been a record-breaking, history setting icon who has sold over 130 million albums and singles worldwide.

Billboard's latest Hottest Hot 100 Hits book lists four of the five biggest selling singles by the Jackson family are by Janet, surprisingly not her legendary brother Michael. Her massive 1993 hit "That's the Way Love Goes" is the biggest selling single of all the Jackson family members, while her 2001 hit "All for You" is the second biggest selling single. Looks like Janet was the one really in control.

I'm pretty sure Jermaine has more than Paul. Maybe they didn't hit as high on the Hot 100, which is what this listing appears to be.

This list in not based on sales.

The list is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least.

If based on sales, most MJ and Jackson 5's singles would have ranked higher than Janet's.

Lol that's what the poster stated. The article stated she sold more, which is false.
Janet fans get so happy that she outranks MJ in one category that they don't see how stupid and petty they look by trying to go tit for tat when at the end of the day there is no comparison. They both gave their own lanes and legacies

I never said that. I own all of Janet's albums. As for singles... nothing more than promotional tools to sell albums.... and excuses to make videos.

This popped up in my recommendations today. Tears for Fears has more entries than Janet (I'm aware RN overlapped into the 90s), and Lionel Richie is tied with Michael at 4 a piece. It don't mean nothing but points based on chart positions but an interesting watch.

Yes, but this is a Janet fan started this thread to convince others that she is bigger than her brothers.
that, of course, ludicrous.

the article itself is old (2013) and the name "Janet Jackson Outsells lol Michael On Billboard Top Selling Jackson Singles" is a blatant and obvious lie, what's the point, in addition to self-esteem, post it here?

Billboard's methodology to tabulate singles success has evolved, changed through the years, and strived only to assess a song's success at a particular time. It is in no way a mean to reflect the absolute success of an artist.

For example, since 1964, the Beatles have charted 71 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, whereas since 2009 Drake and the cast of Glee have charted 80 and 207 entries respectively.

Another way to look at it: Most of the biggest hits during the 70's and 80's were charting for approx. 20 to 25 weeks on the Hot 100, whereas Taylor Swift's recent hit Shake It Off has charted for 25 weeks in the Top 10 alone while Imagine Dragon's Radioactive spent 84 weeks on the Hot 100.

No, in fact, it wasn't. I started the thread because I wanted to, and it had nothing to do with her brothers. As a fan, I enjoy sharing her impressive chart stats. As a non-fan, it would probably benefit you to just steer clear of her threads all together, but it's quite apparent that the troll in you won't even make that a remote possibility.

Not really. The USA/Billboard is only one corner of the world and Michael was always an albums man. I certainly never bought a 7inch single by either artist anyway. I always bought 12inch and CD singles only.

Who gives a fuck about chart "success"? are 'Avatar' and 'Titanic' your favourite movies because they're the biggest grossing movies. Would you "enjoy" sharing that news? How about 'Thriller' being the biggest selling album? Do you champion McDonalds because it has more restaurants than anyone else or that Coca Cola is the world's biggest brand! No, of course you don't and you damn well shouldn't.

My point is, you enjoy focusing on unimportant, subjective bullshit. Well done you and well done Janet on influencing your mind to such an extent that this is what you "enjoy" doing. FFS.

Actually, outside of Paul Mc Cartney, MJ is probably the biggest singles artist in the Hot 100 history, with 40 Top 10 singles, including 17 #1 hits.

that, of course, ludicrous.

the article itself is old (2013) and the name "Janet Jackson Outsells lol Michael On Billboard Top Selling Jackson Singles" is a blatant and obvious lie, what's the point, in addition to self-esteem, post it here?

so what a janet fan posted it, do mj fans not post articles about him? its just crazy that instead of realizing the amazing success one family has had in music it turns into a sibling vs sibling thread. billboard saw the need to create a list just for this family's singles,im impressed.

lol Right! The comments from the anti-Janet loons on the Org never cease to amaze me.

Is it not possible for a Janet fan to also be an MHM fan and vice-versa? Based on people's comments on here, you'd think that's impossible.

im a jackson family fan even though janet is my favorite. i respect and appreciate all of their accomplishments but for some reason alot of mj fans find it hard to give credit to his siblings for the things they have done. you got 3 iconic acts from 1 family, that should be celebrated.
