Songs in the same vein as Whip Appeal 1988-1991. The ones with that sugar coated sprinkle of the late 80's early 90's production. Heavy synth sections to name a few details for example. This even comes to mind. And I'm a tad embarrassed for putting up this link, when it's not the best body of work in Hip Hop. It's just to show you what I'm saying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqIx2qxW55M

. . Most likely other LA/Face ballads of roughly the same time period. . "Soon As I Get Home" - Babyface, 1989 . "Two Occasions" - The Deele, 1987 . "Roni", and also "Rock Wit'cha', - Bobby Brown, 1988/1989 album version or Quiet Storm remix . 'Can We Talk' - Tevin Campbell, ~1992/1993 . I apologize if any of these suggestions are too facetious or "pop" for whatever mix or project you are looking to put together. . . Maybe other "smooth" offerings (depending how far away from the 'Whip Appeal' model you want to go), from less-well-remembered jack/swing groups and productions? 'Still in Love' - Troop ~1989, and 'All I Do Is Think of You' - Troop ~1989, 'Closer Than Just Friends' - Surface, 1989, 'Make It Last Forever' - Keith Sweat, ~1987. . .

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton | |
