When he still had "slave" written on his cheek he called George Michael the best songwriter in the world or the best pop songwriter in the world, or something similar. George Michael had problems with his labels at the time, so it was stated in that context in a magazine interview ("when not even the best songwriter in the world can't get his label to release the album he wants to put out...", something like that).

I think quite a few people referred to George Michael as the best writer of pop songs at the time, so it wasn't such an odd statement to me back then. I don't really see that so often anymore, to be honest.
