George Michael had problems with his labels at the time, so it was stated in that context in a magazine interview ("when not even the best songwriter in the world can't get his label to release the album he wants to put out...", something like that).

I think quite a few people referred to George Michael as the best writer of pop songs at the time, so it wasn't such an odd statement to me back then. I don't really see that so often anymore, to be honest.

The Bangles - they said he saw their "Hero Takes a Fall" video on mtv and was like who's that! An all girl band!
And he gave them "Manic Monday."
