.."BLACK LIVES MATTER!!!!"...Loved "The Charade"..I was really hoping they would play this..Cool message..Jesse and Blackwell killed it. Pino was on point too...Jesse's second time on SNL!..His guitar solo was damn near 'orgasmic'.. ."Really Love" was nice and laid back too...I don't get all of the hatred for Kendra Foster either..I don't know her so maybe I'm missing out on something..SNL has made me happy with P in Nov and D last night...Now get Funkadelic!!!

Lenny Kravitz is always shirt off at 50.
D'angelo is Yoda, he doesn't need to take his shirt off. And he looks great.

scriptgirl said: NO THANK YOU. Can't stand that chick. She's not that talented and lord knows she sounds like a frog when she sings. I'll keep my mouth shut over how Kendra has gotten to where she's gotten. It's a shame with someone with her ego is getting all this play. I wish Angie Stone would work with D again. Now THAT is a talented woman. [Edited 1/31/15 19:00pm] Naw. Go ahead. Open your mouth. Tell everyone bout all the hard work, touring, paying dues, ect. It's cool not to like someone's style. Everyone has their tastes. But to infer that Kendra got to this point by taking some shortcut is simply not true. since Run & Them were saying "Here we go"

Very average performance to me. Band was quite tight but D will unfortunately remain a massive underachiever to me. I thought he had no charisma whatsoever.
I thought his falsetto was horrific and what about this mumbling? You don't understand shit anymore when he sings.
Can't get over his physical appearance as well. He looked so fat and rigid behind the mike.
Pleased to hear Blackwell and JJ though. [Edited 2/2/15 6:36am]

They sounded great, even though D'angelo seemed a bit uninspired and was lacking energy. His voice is most certainly there, and the music was so damn goood! However I hope he will put more energy behind his tour. It can be that he is more "shy" on television shows than on tour. The crowd is way different. On tour he'll feed off of his fans that are giving energy back to him. I've seen similar lack of energy with other artists when performing on tv. My Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tundrah

Interesting observations. To me D looked slightly lost and a bit nervous at times, but his singing and the band sounded great and certainly not uninspired to me. He might have been somewhat nervous as it was his first major TV performance since his new album dropped.
Also he seems to have gained quite a bit of weight in recent months, which might have made him feel slightly uncomfortable as well. I don't give a rat's ass about that myself as a fan, I care about his music and not his looks, but I would understand that someone quite shy and withdrawn like D could maybe get somewhat nervous over that. Especially as he is being remembered by part of the audience as a hardbodied male sex symbol.
Anyway, great album, great performance. Here is me hoping D will enjoy the success of his new album and that he will enjoy touring and creating (and releasing!) new great music too. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Bruno Mars is a showman. D'angelo is a soulman.

Thank you for the SNL clips. I thought the performances were pretty good but the female vocalist was incredibly distracting. So much so, I wondered if her behavior was intentional. D'Angelo himself looked so uncomfortable, perhaps he prefered that she absorb the attention?
In any case, I wish him the best with this record and future performances. I hope he is enjoying it somewhat.

D looked restrained his first perf. Much looser on the second one. It could be that D was not comfortable in what he had on for the first segment.
Re the female vocalist, George Clinton said in an interview that she has a tendency to take over when she performs. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Otis Redding was a soulman. James Brown was a soulman. They were powerful. They would make you cry of joy. D is a nice talented Funk / R&B act but he is nowhere near the greatest.

As a captivating performer this was not a great performance by D'Angelo. His singing was good though, certainly not horrific. I have seen him live during his Voodoo tour and he is definately capable of giving a hugely fun and entertaining performance. I guess he still is, but this SNL performance didn't show him as charismatic frontman, which is a missed opportunity for him I guess. I suppose he might still be a bit fragile mentally and perhaps uncomfortable with his weight. Nevertheless musically it sounded great! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

As a fan overall I think its still amazing to see him on TV when 8 weeks ago you would never dreamt of it!!
You can tell he was nervous in the first song.. to me it sounds like he didnt hit the right notes in the first line of the song either. As a live performer throughout his career he has typically been either behind the keyboard or in recent years been playing guitar so perhaps this had something to do with it as he seemed a lot more comfortable on The Charade.
I agree with whoever said its alot harder to bring energy with you on a TV performance as well, with a crowd of fans its a completely different story. It reminded me a little bit of Frank Oceans SNL performance (look it up) .. amazing performance but you wouldnt say there was real "energy" there. One thing that is not up for debate is how incredible of a job the sound engineer did on this, one of the best Sounding TV performances i have ever heard espcially considering the size of the band.
Looking forward to seeing him live in London in a couple of weeks, and i know its going to be special.

. Too right. . No dispute about Bruno being a top stage performer. Don't really care too much for Really Love, but I thought the D'Angelo performance of Charade was fierce, and dramatic. It helps that D'Angelo's songwriting is light years ahead of Bruno's. Easier for the music to do the talking. . Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

You know, I usually blame the performances on the bad sound mixing on SNL, but it turns out you just need a full band and talented group to fill out all the sounds properly and be great.
