And the Superbowl Halftime Act is...

Katy Perry Performing at Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show

By Billboard Staff | October 09, 2014 9:34 PM EDT

Katy Perry will perform at this year's Super Bowl halftime show, sources have confirmed with Billboard.

Perry's performance has been speculated since August after the National Football League had reportedly shortlisted her along with Coldplay and Rihanna, who saw the use of her song "Run This Town" with Jay-Z axed in a segment during the wake of the Ray Rice scandal.

Super Bowl Halftime Pay-to-Play Reports: Grammys Producer Ken Ehrlich Weighs In

The news of those three contenders also came with word the league was asking those artists under consideration to pay to play, since last year's broadcast drew a record-setting 111.5 million viewers and previous performers have all seen significant boosts in sales, touring and public profile.

In response, appearing on ESPN's College Game Day this past Saturday, Perry said, "I'm not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl."

With previous speculation, Billboard reported a number of good reasons for Perry to play the big stage, including her current hits, her (mostly) family-friendly catalog, and her international popularity (her 58.1 million Twitter followers make her the most popular presence on the social site).

I posted this same topic but I think it may have been after this one kicked off. Am I the only one disappointed with this? I guess there's something to be said for "marketing".

half time shows dont do nothing for me. Just give me the game, pizza, hotwings, deviled eggs, hotdogs, hamburgers, potato salad,ribs,chips/dips,soda pop and beer. though I did think The Peppers and Bruno put on one the better shows.

Yeah very safe and we can expect another all-mimed show like Madonna's. Why don't they go back to the late 2000s shows with more rock and live singing? Surely in the next couple of years they will try to have Rihanna and Taylor Swift as well...

There is no controversy with Lady Gaga, it's all manufactured silliness. Have you seen her live? She's pretty awful. I mean, cringe-worthy awful. I saw her Artrave show and she is just not what the hype machines is telling us. She can't dance, she lip-synchs like the rest of them, and she just has this overall negative vibe. She kept telling the fans to fuck-off, if they didn't want to hear her new stuff. Not fun at all. And the show's production was so cheap it was sad. The friend that took me called it 'Party-City," rave. lol

Although I'm no fan of Kate Perry's music, at least she's likeable.

I don't think it's a good choice because people who watch football are of all age groups not just young people. A lot of older people don't know one song by Katy Perry. Madonna was a much better choice because she started out in the 80's and has hits from three decades and everyone of all different ages knows her.

Even if they chose a rock group there would still be a lot of miming because the producers don't want artists to sing live. They are afraid of something going wrong. The way it is set up there is only a small time between the end of the first half and the second half where you have to set up and dismantle the stage that it really doesn't give time to do a proper soundcheck and get everything set up right for a fully live performance. I don't have a problem with miming at an event like this, but I think it would be short sighted if they only chose performers who appealed to a younger audience because everyone of all ages, races etc watches the Super Bowl. Madonna was a better choice because she has a much broader appeal since she has over 30 years of hits. I wouldn't mind if they chose an older artist like Duran Duran for example.

Yeah I know, I think even The Who had some backing tapes but to me Prince had the best halftime show ever and he was singing live. Madonna's performance was kind of a disappointment to me, I love her tours but her halftime show was too safe and did not showcase her qualities as a performer.

I have to disagree with you about Madonna's performance. I personally thought it was great! Now, she had to adjust it a little since it's on tv and it's a family audience so she couldn't do some of the shocking or controversial things she sometimes does. What didn't you like about it? I think it showcased everything that was great about Madonna as a performer. The Like A Prayer performance was great. Madonna's performance was pretty much universally acclaimed so I'm surprised you didn't like it.

The biggest problem with Madonna's performance is that she had way too many unnecessary cameos. She's big enough that cameo's shouldn't have been necessary.

What's wrong with her performing with other artists? She performs with a lot of other people anyway, like all the dancers she has. I think it's cool she can share the stage with other people and allow them to have some of her spotlight. I don't think she thinks it's necessary to bring in other people, it's something she wanted to do and have fun with. Lighten up people. I don't see why people get so bent out of shape about her performing with other people.

I don't have any issues with her collaborations, fans who do are simply being elitists who were using the lack of Madonna collaborations as a bragging right against fans of Mariah Carey and others. Ignoring the fact that she went to Prince & Lenny Kravitz at the peak of her fame and both Erotica and Bedtime Stories had raps. As for the halftime show, I don't know, it seemed too predictable with the song choices, also too condensed, she is a lot more than Like A Prayer, Vogue & Music, sometimes it seems the amount of Madonna songs that are remembered by the general public is just a handful even though she has had 38 top 10 hits and her hit streak is only matched by The Beatles & Elvis Presley. The concept of the performance was also weird, though I appreciated that image-wise she did not do a "best of" look or something. I just thought the Sticky & Sweet Tour was awesome and she was at the top of her game with that show so the halftime show was a letdown after that.
