Only one Queen of Soul, and nobody else is even in the conversation:
Shake that thang Aretha!
The epitome of cool, everytime she drives the car!

- I wasn't blown away by her version. I know I may sound blasphemous, and Adele is somewhere grinning proud ear to ear hearing this but I'm left hoping the other covers are better.

Mention in Rolling Stone Aretha Franklin Covers Adele, Details New 'Diva Classics' Tribute LPSoul legend takes on Etta James, Alicia Keys and the Supremes on upcoming albumAs all of us here know, Nothing Compares 2 U is indeed one of the all time great Diva Classics by "you know who". Ewww Aretha's Rollin I the Deep is awash with autotune and edited vocals. Not impressed at all. Leave her alone with a good take for goodness sake! Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

I'm glad ReRe is covering The Empress of Soul's classic...Gladys has never felt "warm feelings" from the Queen..Aretha chosing one of her Classics is PROOF that she's always had Respect for Gladys..We all know ReRe is also The Queen of Shade...Don't take it personal...LOL...

Just listened to her "Rolling In The Deep" cover. IMHO, not good, but that's just me. Her voice has aged and not well, in my opinion, but others may disagree. I didn't see "Last Dance" on the iTunes track list, so maybe, it didn't get cut. However, track lists do change.

Was that Cissy Houston looking so excited to be there in the background?

Re's cover of Rolling In The Deep is like a GLEE cover version. Its like she gets bored with the song and decides to change it to Ain't No Mountain High Enough towards the end for absolutely no reason. . I am equal parts excited and terrified to hear "Nothing Compares To U", I just hope it isn't a duet with Andre 3000 playing Rosie or vice versa. I'd love to hear them smash it to bits and make it something completely different

- According to a recent interview with Ali Shaheed, that's exactly what he did with it. He said it doesn't resemble Prince's original or Sinead's hit.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Very cool!! Ali is involved in production?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well, I hope they kept the chord change from Sinead's arrangement.

- Nah, I'm sorry. I was referring to 3 Stacks' production. Andre did an interview Ali Shaheed on NPR. Good stuff. Being that Andre and Big Boi were big Tribe fans Dre seemed alot more into the interview and offered up that gem about producing Aretha and putting a completely different spin on it. - http://www.npr.org/blogs/microphonecheck/

We'll see. That's the main song I'm interested in really. No matter how Dre produced it, I'm sure Prince is just proud to have one of his songs covered by Ms. Franklin.

If they kept it closer to The Family's, he would probably be happiest, but I betcha Aretha listened to the Rosie Gaines (Prince) one more than Sinead's.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
- You know...I always thought of Rosie Gaines as his own personal version of Aretha anyway. Rosie's gospel-tinged vocals were from Aretha's lineage. - Never heard The Family's version.

I'm usually not one for covers, especially something as perfect as edele's rolling in the deep, but wow!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Absolutely! That's why I think Aretha's will tackle something closest to Rosie's arrangement.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah her rendition of Rolling in the Deep is awful. Omg Love God and I shall 4ever Love u
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm not too fond of it,myself.

I prefer Aretha with old school sounding production, this Adele cover just sounds unnecessary to me. Like it doesn't do anything different and it doesn't sound fresh at all. And I was kind of looking forward to hearing this albums because of the NC2U cover, but I'm also afraid of what Andre will do production wise on it... Change it one more time..
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Why did Aretha's handlers let her go on stage with such an awfully arranged wig??
Change it one more time..

I've only heard one song from this cd (rolling in the deep). It's ok, but not nearly as good as the original. I wish Clive would stop with all this shit. I cringe to think Prince would do something like this in the future. I would rather have New Power Soul released over and over than to see Prince do something like this.
