Perhaps in anticipation of the upcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is By My Side (starring OutKast's Andre Benjamin), two albums by the legendary guitarist are being reissued. The Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge, which were originally released in 1971 following Hendrix's death at age 27, are being remastered and reissued on CD, LP, and digital download on Sept. 16.

Lisa Stansfield, what is so great about her..?

Well, I like her cover of the Barry White song "Never never gonna give you up", with that sexy naked video... but otherwise..?

Btw, I remember she said the Prince protegés are rubbish, and she would never sing (release) a Prince penned song.

She had to make "damage control" to that article where she said that about Prince, so later there was an article with Lisa Stansfield claiming "Parade" was/ is one of her favorite albums.

^ I can't exactly remember - maybe these articles were in NME.

I will probably repurchase "Affection" for the DVD. A DVD was released on Lisa some years ago that contained her music videos but for some odd reason, they decided to delete the music video for "You Can't Deny It'. confuse

.

In 2012, Country Funk 1969-1975 (Volume I) gathered together songs from a genre with no name. It’s a genre created not from geography or shared ideology but a term applied retrospectively based solely on the feel of the songs: hip-swinging rhythms with bourbon on the breath. These were songs to make your cowboy boots itchy, written and performed by the likes of Bobbie Gentry, Johnny Jenkins and Link Wray. Songs that encompass the elation of gospel with the sexual thrust of the blues; country hoedown harmonies cut with inner city grit. Compiled from tracks dating from the late ‘60s to the mid ’70s, Country Funk is the sound of country music blending with sounds and scenes from coast to coast, white America’s heartland music blending with the melting pot as the nation assessed its identity in advance of its bicentennial year.

.

The good news for the people who fell in love with the first volume of Country Funk is this: there’s plenty more where that came from. Light In The Attic has followed up that first 16-track disc with a second volume, Country Funk Volume II 1967 – 1974, and a new set of loose-talking, lap steel-twanging tracks. On the single CD / 2xLP volume you’ll find household names like Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Kenny Rogers, Jackie DeShannon, JJ Cale, Bobby Darin and Dolly Parton. You’ll also find obscure artists like Bill Wilson, whose lost Ever Changing Minstrel album was produced by the feted Dylan producer Bob Johnston, and Thomas Jefferson Kaye, noted producer of Gene Clark’s opus No Other. Gene Clark’s here too, as half of Dillard & Clark, wringing raw emotion from The Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down”.

.

All of the individuals featured have a story to tell, whether it’s that of the sidelined session musician, the fading star or the country upstart. There’s Donnie Fritts (“Sumpin’ Funky Goin’ On”), whose roots stretch back to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and who has played keyboard for Kris Kristofferson for decades. There’s Canadian group Great Speckled Bird, who joined Janis Joplin and more on 1970’s Festival Express tour. There’s Hoyt Axton, who along with singing the harmonica-sucking ode to “California Women”, also took a role in Gremlins. There’s Jim Ford, who Sly Stone once described as “the baddest white man on the planet”. And there’s Billy Swan, who kicks proceedings off with a soul-stirring organ, a lazy kickdrum and his rockabilly vocals echoing like a croon into the grand canyon.

.

Compiled and presented once again by the team behind Volume I (DJ and music supervisor Zach Cowie plus Light In The Attic’s Matt Sullivan and Patrick McCarthy), the release also includes a reunion of writer Jessica Hundley and Jess Rotter (original album/label artwork and new illustrations by) in the form of a comic book called “The Hot Dawgs".

.

It may be the genre that had no name, but there’s plenty of gas in the country funk trunk yet.

  • All tracks newly re-mastered
  • Features cuts by Bob Darin, Thomas Jefferson Kaye, Willie Nelson and more
  • 2xLP housed in a deluxe Stoughton “Tip-On” jacket
  • Includes comic with story by Jessica Hundley along with Jess Rotter’s illustrations
  • Subscribers and Deluxe LP Pre-orders get the exclusive “Country Funk” bandana. Hand silk-screened with teal ink on rough-hewn fabric. Designed by Henry Owings / Chunklet Graphic Control, with art by Jess Rotter / Rotter & Friends
  • Color vinyl editions:
    - 200 on “Sky Blue” wax + Bandana ( LITA Vinyl subscriber exclusive)
    - 200 on “Lime Green” wax + Bandana (LITA.net pre-orders deluxe exclusive – limit 2 per customer)
    - 100 on “Gold” wax (LITA Shop exclusive – limit 2 per customer)

.

1. Billy Swan - Don't Be Cruel
2. Bob Darin - Me and Mr. Hohner
3. Hoyt Axton - California Women
4. Townes Van Zandt - Hunger Child Blues
5. Thomas Jefferson Kaye - Collection Box
6. Willie Nelson - Shotgun Willie
7. Jackie DeShannon - The Weight
8. Gene Clark & Doug Dillard - Don't Let Me Down
9. Bill Wilson - Pay Day Give Away
10. Dolly Parton - Getting Happy
11. Larry Williams & Johnny Watson with The Kaleidoscope - Nobody
12. Jim Ford - Rising Sign
13. JJ Cale - Cajun Moon
14. Donnie Fritts - Sumpin Funky Going On
15. Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Tulsa Turnaround
16. Great Speckled Bird - Long Long Time To Get Old
17. Willis Alan Ramsey - Northeast Texas Women

Jimi Hendrix Rainbow Bridge on 200g LP

Hendrix's Second Posthumous Release Finally Back In Print With Original Album Art and Track Order: Studio-Based Record Includes Contributions from Buddy Miles, Noel Redding, and the Ronettes

.

Remastered from the Original Analog Master Tapes by Bernie Grundman and Pressed at QRP: Rainbow Bridge Has Never Sounded Better

.

More than four decades after it's original release, Jimi Hendrix's second posthumous album gets the treatment it's long deserved. Remastered from the original analog tapes by Bernie Grundman and pressed on 200g LP at QRP, Rainbow Bridge sounds better than ever, with the legendary guitarist's futuristic playing and soulful deliveries now possessing unrivaled presence, dynamics, extension, and tonal balance. The record—mistakenly believed by many to be a live record despite featuring only one live cut—also features the original cover artwork and track sequencing, making this pressing absolutely essential and unmistakably definitive.
.
Rainbow Bridge was compiled and mixed in 1971 by Eddie Kramer and Mitch Mitchell, with the help of Electric Lady Studios engineer John Jansen. Most of the tracks were recorded in 1969 and 1970 during the same sessions that spawned The Cry Of Love. Rainbow Bridge is often misconstrued as being an entirely live album being that the film of the same name features excerpts of a live Jimi Hendrix performance in Maui. However, Hendrix had no role in the creation of the unfocused 1971 film directed by Chuck Wein. The film was not a Hendrix project but instead an independent vision of his manager Michael Jeffery. After Hendrix’s death in September 1970, Jeffery scrapped Hendrix’s original vision of a double studio album titled First Rays Of The New Rising Sun and called for Kramer, Mitchell and Jansen to compile two posthumous albums—including one that would that would serve as a soundtrack for the Rainbow Bridge film.
.
Mitchell, Kramer, and Jansen drew upon Hendrix’s rich trove of studio recordings that the guitarist had been developing at Electric Lady Studios. Songs such as “Dolly Dagger” and “Room Full Of Mirrors” were bright examples of Hendrix’s new creative direction. Other standouts include a studio rendition of “Star Spangled Banner” as well as the majestic “Hey Baby (New Rising Sun).” The one live track on the album, an extraordinary rendition of Hendrix’s original blues composition “Hear My Train A Comin’,” is taken from a performance at Berkeley Community Theatre in May of 1970, and not in the film at all. Buddy Miles and Noel Redding both appear on one track each, and the Ronettes provide backing vocals on “Earth Blues.”
.
Beginning in the late 1990s, the tracks on Rainbow Bridge were reassembled into various compilations, including First Rays of the New Rising Sun, South Saturn Delta, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set. Now, fans of all ages will be able to enjoy these songs as they were experienced when they first became available 43 years ago. But that experience is now exponentially improved, thanks to this definitive analog pressing and meticulous restoration.
Order your copy today and savor Hendrix as he's meant to be heard!
.

Jimi Hendrix Rainbow Bridge Track Listing:

SIDE ONE
1. Dolly Dagger
2. Earth Blues
3. Pali Gap
4. Room Full of Mirrors
5. Star Spangled Banner (studio version)

SIDE TWO
1. Look Over Yonder
2. Hear My Train A Comin' (live)
3. Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)

Eccentric Soul: The Way Out Label - Various Artists on 3LP or 2 CD from Numero Group

.

Fueled by the financial drippings of number runners and boosted by Hall-of-Fame running back Jim Brown, Cleveland, Ohio’s Way Out Records offered asylum for a rising crop of rogue soul men, rust-belt vocal ensembles, and trial-by-fire producers.
.
Helmed by a friendly consortium of hustlers, police officers, and gridiron giants, pet project beget obsession as Motown arrangers, gospel choirs, and the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra were all beckoned to the wrong side of the tracks to mint masterpieces for the Sensations, Volcanic Eruption, the Exceptional Three, and Bobby Wade, all beneath the mindful gaze of a wall-mounted shotgun.
.
Reaching their peak in the late ‘60s, Eccentric Soul: The Way Out Label gathers the brightest moments from the quirky operation’s eleven year bid. The 3LP configuration boasts a double gatefold with beautiful photos and ephemera from the label’s low-flying promotional department. For fans of group harmony, sweet soul, orchestral feats and lo-fi oddities, The Way Out Label is an excellent addition to Numero Group's already popular and powerful Eccentric Soul series.

• One of the true mainstays in the world of soul music for some decades, the late Johnnie Taylor (1934-1999) – tagged ‘The Soul Philosopher’ – created a solid legacy of recordings starting in 1963 with Sam Cooke’s SAR label through a great period of hits with Stax Records (including the classics “Who’s Making Love,” “Jody Got Your Girl And Gone” and “Cheaper To Keep Her”) before signing with Columbia Records in 1975, achieving worldwide success in 1976 with “Disco Lady,” the first-ever platinum single.

• Beyond his Columbia debut (Eargasm), Johnnie’s subsequent albums for the label included “Disco 9000” (the soundtrack for a 1977 film); his last two sets for the label, 1979’s SHE’S KILLING ME (previously only available as a rare Japanese CD) and 1980’s A NEW DAY (making its worldwide CD debut) are presented on this 2014 SoulMusic Records’ two-on-one reissue.

• Both albums featured production by both Brad Shapiro (known for his stellar work with Millie Jackson, Wilson Pickett and many others) and the late Don Davis (who masterminded Taylor’s recordings from 1968 on), Davis cutting tracks In Detroit and Shapiro in Muscle Shoals. Johnnie himself co-produced one cut, “I Can’t Leave Your Love Alone” with Frank Johnson on SHE’S KILLING ME.

• While neither album achieved notable chart or sales impact at the time of release, a retrospective review of the music reveals that it is in keeping with Taylor’s smooth-yet-always-soulful approach, highlights include the 1979 album’s title track, the soulful “Love Account,” “The Heart Break Kid” and the standout “Sylvia” (featuring soul group Enchantment on background vocals). Notes by distinguished writer Matt Bauer include quotes from producer Shapiro and others.

Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

Before the year is out Driven By the Music will release seven classic Donna Summer albums as expanded deluxe CD editions, along withheavyweight vinyl pressings and limited box sets for both CD and vinyl.

The albums in question are The Wanderer (1980), Donna Summer (1982),Cats Without Claws (1984) , All Systems Go (1987), the Stock Aitken Waterman-produced Another Place And Time (1989), Mistaken Identity(1991) and I’m A Rainbow (recorded in 1981, but not released until 1996).

anothertimeTrack listings haven’t been released, but it’s looking like many will be expanded one CD editions with the odd exception like I’m A Rainbow (two-disc) and Another Place And Time (three discs). These re-issues are packaged as case-bound books, and come complete with lyrics, new notes from Christian John Wikane and Justin ‘Musicology’ Kantor.

These will all be issued as 180g LPs including a first vinyl release for I’m A Rainbow which will actually be a double LP gatefold.

Both vinyl and CDs can be bought together in collector’s box sets. These are available to purchase from Amazon (and other retailers) but fans are incentivised to buy from the official store (Europe & Australasia only) by the inclusion of a free two-track twelve-inch vinyl single (CD single for the CD box) which includes the tracks State Of Independence (DJ Dero Vocal Mix) and Love’s About To Change My Heart (Loveland’s Full-On 12″” Vocal). The latter is previously unreleased.

The boxes and individual CD and vinyl releases will be issued on 1 December 2014. ese will all be issued as 180g LPs
