Said it before and will say it again, Lauryn hasn't been the same since she dated one of those Marley dudes...

That is why though I loved her album,I never had no desire to see her live. She came with DeLa Soul to my hometown last Month and she took almost 2 hours coming out after they finished their opening set. She's been doing this bullshit as far back as 2010:

Lauryn Hill Hours Late For Show, Tells Fans She's Worth The Wait
December 31, 2010 | J-23

Lauryn Hill recently kicked off her first extended tour in years, and it is not off to a great start. The former Fugees star was four hours late to her show in Williamsburg on Tuesday, December 28. Her DJ and band were on stage waiting along with the fans, who soon turned hostile.

After members of the audience began throwing cups and bottles on stage, the keyboard player taped a sign to his kit that read "I was on time." A witness told the NY Times that when Lauryn arrived shortly after midnight she was carried in to avoid the snow. By the time she hit the stage some fans had makeshift signs that read "you just lost one" and "this is insulting."

While Hill apologized for being late, her tone was anything but apologetic as she told fans “I spent my entire 20s sacrificing my life to give you love. So when I hear people complain, I don’t know what to tell you,” she said. “I personally know I’m worth the wait.”

After performing her first song, she noticed the sign taped to the keyboard and tore it down, telling the band member, “you trying to escape the bottles and the cups. Next time you take it, you take it like a man. We in this together, brother.”

Wow.. I really feel bad for her. I don't think she'll realize just how delusional she is until she doesn't have any fans left.

Change it one more time..

Her fame became too much for her to handle and then she got mixed up in whacky religious beliefs, not to mention all the kids she had in a short period of time. I wouldn't be surprised to know that she suffered with post partum depression and the crazy religious crap she was being fed didn't help either. I guess Rohan's infidelities played a part as well.

IMO - her Miseducation album is a masterpiece but she'll never do anything like that again.

Yeah, maybe she did have postpartum because it seems that the early 2000s was a dark time for her. Do you all remember when she showed up at one event in what appeared to be clown make up? It was really sad. I mean, it wasn't just a bad make up job, it was like she just painted herself. Did anyone else see this picture?

It's like Lauryn's entire personality changed. I never met her or anything but it seems that her Miseducation era compared to now are like night and day.

Wait a minute, two hours? lol lol Unless they were serving free liquor, I can't imagine waiting that long for someone....well I might wait two hours for Prince but that's even pushing it smile What did everyone do (at your hometown concert) when she finally came onstage? Booing? Cheering? lol

I'm taking the risk on Monday at Brooklyn Bowl. Will let ya know how it goes down.
I thought her talk show performances in the last year of "could you be loved" and "something" were epic. Hopefully she brings it like that... I'll be mentally prepared to wait though haha

Did you not Follow the trial and read about her sentencing? You do realize Lauryn went to prison for not paying her Taxes and served her time? Are you saying she shouldnt get a 2nd chance from Society & her Fans? She owed the Government their money and she paid a price for it. It's interesting that when Black Celebs go to Prison and serve their time The Public is reluctant to give them a second chance. Robert Downey jr was the Biggest Crack Head in Gollywood and the Courthouse was his 2nd home. Gollywood forgave him every time a judge sentenced him..Now Robert is making $50 Million a picture...Celebs are Human beings that are bound to make mistakes..It says more about the Public when we pick and choose who to Forgive and who to continue throwing judgemental Bricks at.

The truth is people like to portray them selves

as god loving fair minded Christians most people are

narrow minded self centered hypocrites. I knew a former

employee who got arrested in an internet FBI sting for

sending a nude photo of himself to a FBI agent posing

as a minor. He served his time and could not get a job.

Nobody would hire a convicted pedophile. We hired him as

a cashier at our gas station. He had served his time - we

had no problem hiring him. I had numerous people tell

me they would never use our gas station again because

we hired him. Because we gave him a second chance now

our hands were dirty too.

And yes Robert Downey bounced back from prison time

but he is the exception. Look how Mel Gibson's career

has been damaged by his run ins with the law. Lindsay

Lohan doesn't seem to realize it yet but her career is

over because of her legal problems. Winona Ryder - remember

her? Shoplifting destroyed her career. Robert Blake was

tried and found not guilty of murder - hows his career

doing?

So stop with the bullshit that only black celebrities are punished

for criminal activities. The majority of celebrities that get

in trouble with the law find it damages their careers. Black or

white. Male or female.

That's why Monica Lewinski's handlers told her to get that bank while she could because they knew that 20+ years down the line people would STILL be talking about that sh!t and she wouldn't be able to get a job. And people don't seem to realize the gravity, even in a depressed economy, of withholding employment from a person. This is a strictly capitalist society, and to me witholding employment from someone based on judgemental notions borders on cruel and unusual punishment.

The same thing happened to Mel Gibson. They haven't let that man breathe since he was in that infamous video. I think he's in the Expendables 3, which is probably his first appearance in a big budget movie in a REALLLLY long time. I think apart from that incident, Mel was probably targeted because he made that epic film about Jesus that made like nearly a billion dollars worldwide but didn't get one mainstream Hollywood award for it. Not even a People's Choice award...and this was all before his so-called meltdown...The irony in that situation is that Robert Downey got a huge helping hand from Mel Gibson! But, RDJ always goes on the record and publically thanks Mel for what he did.

I was watching a TV show today and they were still talking about Michael Vick's past but the topic at hand was about Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens! Michael Vick has nothing to do with Ray Rice but we still have to hear about it?

Lauryn's erratic behavior at the concerts isn't helping her comeback efforts much though. Her die hard fans must be made of steel because there's no way I could wait that long lol She clearly has some sort of issue going on but it's hard to pinpoint what it is.

EDIT: They were talking about Ray Rice (running back) not Ray Lewis the retired lineman.

I read this post after I wrote the one that I just did. I don't think Chancellor was excluding anyone when he was drawing attention to what happens to black celebrities. After all, this is a thread about Lauryn Hill, a black celebrity. Mel Gibson could have made only anti-black comments and would have still been an A-list celebrity. Mel made the mistake of targeting Jews in his unfortunate tirade. So, Mel wasn't shunned because he was white and made a mistake, he was shunned because he made a mistake by saying anything negative about Jews.

Lindsay Lohan has still been offered work in TV, movies and theater. In fact, she's in the UK working at the moment. It's not like she's Todd Bridges and can't get a job anywhere.

Winona Ryder has gone on the record more than once saying that she took a voluntary break from acting and she's working on projects at the moment (I think).

Robert Blake had one foot in the grave by the time the trial happened, so it's not like he was getting serious roles anywhere. He continued to work long after the murders happened, didn't he?

Why is it BS when someone black makes a comment about what happens to black celebrities? If it doesn't affect you and if you don't consider yourself as racist, why get angry? I swear, I cannot understand how people saying a person expressing their feelings about racism is BS and then turaround and act like they are not in fact making a very dismissive comment that is rooted/fueled by underlying racism? If someone called me a whore, I wouldn't flinch because I'm not. But, if I were an undercover whore who pretended to be saintly and got angry when called a whore, to me that tells the whole story.

Check out this video about Justin Bieber. Has his career ended because of this?

It would be interesting to hear how she's been able to support herself since the late 90s. I think she's in the process of writing a book as well. Mark my words, she'll be making cash making the rounds on her book tour once Hillary officially announces her presidential candidacy! biggrin

She made millions from the book deal back when the scandal happened plus a couple interviews where the back-ended paid her (they didn't "pay" for the interviews per say but they wound up paying). I assume her financial advisors looked after her because she's been living in apartments in both New York and London and got a degree from the London School of Economics.

This shit almost brought me to tears at around 7:30. What happens before that point is bewildering, something like a grace jones meets mgmt on acid with david lynch visual. She skewers the song almost growling the lyrics at points, takes away all of the familiarity then it literally stops and becomes almost a sequel, new accusations instead of where were you when i needed you. her voice making more of a sound similar to the album version then back into that rage. Staring at the backup singers... this is as crazy as she screams it is. Crazy. That word follows her around and she has to sing about it over and over... STILL I would take this a million times over Beyonkey's recent more literal attempt. The literal replaying of the album version must become so tiring year after year. Crazy is fun and creative.

.

This is some animalistic theatrical performance art and it is birthed on that stage. I think its beautiful really. I'd love if she put an album out that was a crazy crazy reggae rock mess like this. I hope the recent show in Brooklyn was just as off the beaten path.

OK, so dudes, I went to the show at Brooklyn Bowl on Monday.

I went in with no expectations, as I knew Lauryn's reputation for inconsistency. This is my first time seeing her, either solo or in Fugees.

.

She came on about when she should IMO... 45 mins or so after opener.

.

She burst out full of energy and the crowd gave it right back to her.

I must say, she was FANTASTIC. You couldn't have asked for a more heartfelt and energetic performance.

.

Every song was a new groove and arrangment from the original, which might annoy some people, but not me, and certainly not her. I think her performance was all the better for the freshness, and I get the feeling she likes living on the edge, when she's on stage.

.

She took a brief moment off stage around the 1:20 mark and then came back with an acoustic to play a couple of songs before the band joined back in.

.

Next, she recalled, to my surprise, a fondness of her days playing shows in Brooklyn with the Fugees and then proceeded to rip through a half hour set of Fugees songs and she even busted some of Wyclef/Pras's classic verses in her own delivery style.

.

The show went on for over 2 hours. I was so pleased to witness her on this night. She tore the house down, and the house gave her the love back, which always helps!

.

When she was done, she invited her fam on stage. There were around 8 kids, some hers, some nieces/nephews. She jokingly announced that the opening act was done and now the kids were gonna perform the main act. Obviously unplanned, a couple of the boys busted a verse each, and her daughter sang a bit of "Doo Wop (that thing)". Nothing amazing, but just a nice end, because Lauryn was so happy, and the kids were all obviously amazed at the way their mom/aunty held the crowd in the palm of her hand.

.

5 stars for me! Feel blessed to have seen her when she's on top of her game!

Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

I finally got a chance to see Ms. Hill recently. It was cool to finally see her because I am a big fan. She looked really good and youthful compared to previous photos and videos. She was not late and appeared to have alot of energy. She did some awful renditions of her classic songs. She also did a few that I liked. She has a undeniable rawness about her singing that conveys so much emotion. She was kinda pitchy as well although her rapping was on point. She does have a good band. Some observations, I notice alot of people leaving early. She lost a good 50% of her audience mid way in her performance which was pretty sad to see. I think she has it in her to do better. I think maybe she should take some time off to come up with a clear direction for her live shows. Come up with some more creative renditions and come up with ways to execute it better. Still love her though

Wow! Why do you think half the crowd left early? Was it that bad? lol From what you wrote, it sounds like she put on a good show for the most part!

Some of her renditions were kinda sloppy. She was pitchy to when it came to her singing. Some were okay but I think some people wanted to hear the songs the way they were recorded from the chatters that I heard. She also was the last to perform. She was on the bill with Janelle and it appears most people came to see Janelle, me included razz although I am a fan of Ms. Hill as well. Janelle threw the house down!!!

That's interesting. I guess sometimes people want to hear a song that's more straighforward and not much variation from the original recording. But, for an artist, changing it up is what helps them keep their sanity from singing the song 10,000 times! Well, at least the show wasn't a total disaster. But, she should definitely sing the song more or less how it's recorded and then just add on some "glittery" stuff to it towards the end or remix it a few times. I can't that I am a Janelle fan but she seems like she's really talented.

Trolls be gone!

F!ck the haters!

This was awesome!

I have her one album. Not sure I would pay to see her though.

This is the same chick that took "I Was Made To Love Him" to epic, frantic limits with Whitney Houston as well. She is a product of what she has seen and done. Heres another thing that idgaf if its not related to her in particular but some shows aren't meant for a standing room crowd. But then its also a rock show in a way, I could ALMOST but not really imagine people dancing to this. Its artsy. Its better suited for an outdoor show or a theater imho. If some of these folks were seated maybe they'd feel a little better about her punctuality issue lol.
